How does the multi graphs work, is that just a matter of sending graph.php multiple device IDs, and and port IDs?

That depends upon what aggregate graphs you want to make!
There are a few multi- graph types, like multi-port_bits.
The group system will generate many types of aggregate graphs automatically for group members.
