Just check out a new version to a different directory, if it works OK, transfer config and rrds over like with the ce upgrade instructions.

There should be no firewall or proxy interfering. Updates have always worked in the past. Is there any way to tell svn to disregard the checksum mismatch?

I think this is most likely to do with an intervening firewall or transparent proxy (most SVN issues are).
