Ok, I disabled the old alerting by commenting out the few lines in config.php. I found the new alerting page and am setting up alerts, but not getting any emails. Where do you configure the new alerting recipients? I don't see it on either link here: http://www.observium.org/wiki/Alerting

I question the existence of a valid scenario where snmpd can't reply to sysDescr but the server isn't considered broken.
You're also talking about the /old/ alerting system, which is deprecated and universally hated and shunned. :>
