This has indeed come up a few years ago already and is effectively a non-mysql-default strict setting. Are you sure this is not an OpenSuSE config default?
It might also be an OpenSUSE default. I read somewhere that this would be a 'feature' of recent versions of mysql. I could only get rid of it with an explicit sql-mode="" in my.cnf whereas I couldn't find another config file anywhere on the system.
But wouldn't it make more sense to just add a default value of "0" to all columns? I mean in the long run.
