It depends exactly what you're wanting to do, but by far the easiest way is just to use the add_device.php script! It checks for duplicates and makes sure things are correctly reachable before adding.

Thinking from an automated system, the same hostname might have multiple interfaces that it is reachable on? * What happens if we change a device’s host name – does observium create a new device?
