Don't add hosts via the web interface.

I have tried twice now to set this up, unsuccessfully.  I have followed the walk-through for Debian/ubuntu as best I can but still can't get anything to work.  I shouldn't say anything.  I DO get the webpage and can log in with the user I set-up in the walk-through via command.  When I go to the "Add Device" page I get a webpage error at the bottom.  I have copied and pasted it here:

Also, when I go to the main page, underneath Devices and Ports..there is a red graphical rectangle with "Permission Denied   x"
 
Any ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated!
