Thanks again - I attempted to unlock the secret commands, however, the default password listed on the sites did not work. Nor did my administrative password.
Bummer...

It's a 3com Baseline switch essentially.
I don't have experience with them myself but I'm assuming it's something like this after you unlocked the full CLI:
system-view interface ethernet 1/0/1 description <text>

Thanks everyone for your input. I've looked at both these suggestions but still cannot find anything about assigning friendly name/description to a port/interface at the switch. I'm going to keep looking.
If anyone else knows how to do this I'd love to hear from ya!

There's a trick to enable full CLI on those boxes. By default they don't do a lot of commands.

I have seen a couple of these switches in the past, I have no experience with this hack though.

Hmm. I'd be surprised if HP devices didn't allow description setting.
Does anyone else have these devices? I'm not familiar with HP's product lineup.

Thanks for the input. We're using HP ProCurve v1910G units. They're not $50 units but they're not super expensive either. The web based management software provided on the HP switch does not appear to offer this ability either - or I just have not found it. I'd love to do this at the switch level - if possible.

Nope. By design we don't give the ability to set things like this in the UI, since it promotes poor management practices (not bothering to set port descriptions on the devices themselves).
If you have a device which doesn't have settable port descriptions, i'd bet it fits into one of these two possibilities:
a) it's a $50 device, and you shouldn't be using it in a scenario where you'd want to label ports b) it's a device with 3 ports, so labelling isn't important enough to compromise other design criteria

Does anyone know if there is a way to apply a friendly name to ports? It does not appear possible in the Community Edition front end, however, is it possible to do this via the database?
Thanks,
