It should be owned by the user the poller wrapper runs as.
Debugging this is probably difficult beyond that, because these rrds are written by the poller wrapper, in python, rather than everything else which is written by PHP and has the usual debugging output.

Check permissions, maybe the ownership of the poller-wrapper rrd changed and now it can't be updated?
