Thanks for the input. We're using HP ProCurve v1910G units. They're not $50 units but they're not super expensive either. The web based management software provided on the HP switch does not appear to offer this ability either - or I just have not found it. I'd love to do this at the switch level - if possible.

If you have a device which doesn't have settable port descriptions, i'd bet it fits into one of these two possibilities:
a) it's a $50 device, and you shouldn't be using it in a scenario where you'd want to label ports b) it's a device with 3 ports, so labelling isn't important enough to compromise other design criteria

Does anyone know if there is a way to apply a friendly name to ports? It does not appear possible in the Community Edition front end, however, is it possible to do this via the database?
