Check the /etc/nsswitch.conf file on the observium host to make sure it's actually using the /etc/hosts file for lookups. You can do this quickly with the following command:
grep 'hosts' /etc/nsswitch.conf
You should see something like "hosts: files dns" or possibly a more complicated version. The important thing is that 'files' appear before 'dns' in the list. You can edit the file if necessary, just don't change the other lines unless you know what you're doing. You may also have to restart the nscd service (or just reboot) to make the changes take effect.

I tried adding the host as sw1 and sw1.xxx.local still no progress. It's saying not able to resolve. I suppose we have to have a private DNS which resolves IP into hosts and vice versa. Are my thoughts correct?
