The configuration file will give you some functionalities, but some fork are based on GPL version. So you will loose what has been done for more than one year.

Your configuration file is your config.php. Copy it, over-write the files from the tar file, and then copy the config.php file back over. Everything else is a source file that you shouldn't be modifying.
