There are plans for a http-based proxy to relieve the latency issues with UDP SNMP.
It's relatively unlikely we'll have any kind of distributed poller setup any time soon, as I don't see much benefit from the complexity.
Any way you do it, you need the MySQL and RRDs on one centralised point, so it makes the most sense to keep the code talking MySQL and RRD on that central point too.
