Just wanted to say thanks again for this, I've been using observium now for a while and it's fantastic. I'm never going to do another nagios installation for as long as I can help it.

Yep, got all that. The issue here ended up not being a config issue but rather crond crashing.

If you're not capable of debugging and getting it to run properly on an unsupported platform yourself, run it on Ubuntu and follow the install guide *TO THE LETTER*.
