Hi Stuart,
You can do debug on the web interface by adding /debug to any URL... *except* when you're not logged in yet - we don't give away any details about the system to unauthenticated people.
To enable this, you need to set the following in config.php:
$config['web_debug_unprivileged'] = TRUE;
I highly recommend commenting it out again once you've successfully set up authentication.
