It has to be enabled in the config.php globally, and then the individual OS options will work.
I forget the option, but you can probably find it easily enough by grepping defaults :D

Well, enabling it is fine unless it's not fine, and you'll discover if it's not fine fairly quickly.
If your environment is mostly Cisco, you'll be fine. This is definitely something you want to ask them to fix too, though :D
