of course any linux based machine can do all with scripts.
you can play a simple `beep’ ( man beep - install it if not ) or can do more sophistic things with a headless vlc command to play any sound on the dashboard pc.
On a mac os x there is a nice feature with the command `say’. It has a natural voice and can read from stdin like ` echo "Alert! server of-srv-nas-3 went down." | say -v Vicki ’ (output of an email is also possible). A nice mac mini (old model would be sufficient) as the pc for the dashboard on the tv. So you hear nearly naturally spoken what happens.
it would sure be easy to check for an incoming mail (from observium to the dashboard pc) and play something. nice idea, if you got an raspbian like pc (bananapi) you can use gpio to trigger a beacon light..
