I've found that editing html/includes/entities/device.inc.php, line 478

  return generate_url(array('page' => 'device', 'device' => $device
['device_id']), $vars);
->
  return generate_url(array('page' => 'device', 'device' => $device
['hostname']), $vars);

produces urls that are hostname based.

The questions are:
was this the right place ?
was there a variable somewhere i had to turn on to make this happen ?
