It's probably seeing the authenticated SVN and going "OH MY GOD THIS 
 ISN'T HTML, ABORT! ABORT!"
That doesn't explain it working with w3m.

Are you sure there's no proxy? w3m may use your configured proxy 
settings, while svn doesn't.
