It’s not clear what you’re asking for.

Port descriptions are set on the device itself. Observium can’t set these. We don’t have Observium-specific descriptions because that makes very little operational sense, and just encourages people to neglect to set their device’s port descriptions.

If you’re asking why port descriptions aren’t currently shown on the widget, we could perhaps change that. They’re not shown at present because it’s quite messy to arrange the widget without running out of space and having overlapping divs and other visual glitches.

Adam.

Hi Farah,

I'm not one of the Observium Team, but been working in this area recently. The link below is a way to use the format the port descriptions on your device:-

https://docs.observium.org/port_descr_parsing/

This isn't exactly the same as what you were doing, but might achieve the result you want via another route.

Just be aware that I was working with the Observium guys to resolve a bug with this. If you're using an Observium version prior to v10304 don't use "commas" in your description field for ports designated as customers or you'll get no graphs. Bug supposedly fixed from v10304 onwards, but this doesn't seem to have made it's way into the "Stable" branch yet and won't be in the CE version for some months.

Chris Macneil
