One more thing - have you thought of extending Observium to gather data via RESTful push ? What I have in mind is a php script to which you can pass variables via url post - hostname, metric/graph, value, and marker what to draw when there is no incoming data (0 or null).

You can't.
Only your option is extend (write a patch) current unix-agent which you should install on ESXi and pass that data.
