These are the maximum values from that period, the darker area shows the average of the values for that period.

the shaded area appears once RRDtool has started to consolidate data, i.e. only storing one data point per 30 minutes instead of one per 5 minutes.

the light area shows the highest (and sometimes lowest, i.e. on a sensor chart) value in that period, where as the dark area shows the average, as if the poller period was 30 minutes.
