Have you tried to set a description in the configuration of the switch or router?

For example, in CISCO:

interface fa0/1
description Internet uplink
...

Observium is able to import these descriptions and show them in the UI.

Does anyone know if there is a way to apply a friendly name to ports? It does not appear possible in the Community Edition front end, however, is it possible to do this via the database?
