Yes, read the docs. I just went through this process which was new to me.

 

You need LLDP, SNMP and forward+reverse DNS working with the same names as the switches SNMP name. Make sure you see the relationship in the LLDP on the switches themselves. Observium doesn’t determine these relationships, it simply reads it from the switches. In the case of my pod/edge switches I see neighbor info like shown below.
