Oh. You don't need to do much to update. It's documented on the wiki.

It's not clear what you want to do.
If you want to re-install, you have to save the rrd directory,
config.inc.php and your database.
Periodically backing up the rrd directory and config.inc.php will usually
suffice. If you want to keep logging data in the database, you can back up
the database too.
If you restore these things at the end of the installation process, it'll
all just 'work'.
