The shaded value is the 5min peak value for that datapoint.
When Observium(well,its RRD who does the math) aggregates all the 6 of your 5min averages to a 30min average which this graph shows it also puts the peak value shaded so that you will now what the peak for the time period was even though the average is far lower.

Hi!

Sorry for what might be an obvious question for some of you.
Have just gotten observium installed and it is monitoring our fw and sw.

When I look at the firewall outside port I get a graph of how much traffic 
that max/min has been sent out/in.
But there is also a shaded value, that I cannot figure out what it is.
