Hi Ellery,
The PHP LDAP module does not currently support SASL binds. (cf. http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.ldap-sasl-bind.php - undocumented and buggy)
So yes, you'll need to allow simple binds if you want to use Observium with your AD.
