How to add a device which only responds to ping/icmp?
Hi
How can i add a device which cannot (!) speak any snmp and only responds to ping/icmp requests?
We have an Aruba wlan setup (Mobility Master and two Mobility Controllers) and i want to add the aps to Observium, so that they are monitored but only by ping/icmp.
(The MM and the two MCs are already added to Observium, but i cannot see if one AP went offline or came back online again)
The aps cannot speak any snmp when managed by the MM or MC, thats why it fails when i try to add one via ./add_device.php
I appreciate any help :)
Best,
Thomas

Hi
I don't really get it sorry, it seems that you can add the probe check after the device is added to Observium.
However, how can i add the device (./add_device.php or via ui) to Observium if it doesn't speak SNMP. For me it always fails with
Could not reach apar01 with given SNMP parameters using v1.
Best, Thomas

You can’t add non-SNMPable devices to Observium’s SNMP polling system, no.
Read the page I linked, it explains.

Hi from Germany,
I think, we are talking about different use-cases.
Adam implemented a (great) possibility to add ping/http/what-ever checks (https://docs.observium.org/ping_only/) to a running Observium host.
The use-case of Thomas (and me) is a little bit different:
We need a possibility to add a device to Observium with “reduced features” (according to the missing SNMP connectivity) but full functionality (were possible).
In my opinion a switch to skip the SNMP-poll during the add-process and a (manual) change from SNMP to a “ping poller” would fit our needs.
Location, Type, Description … can be edited manually … and as “full-featured” device the great API can be used for data-exchange.

Philipp

This doesn't really make any sense.
99.999% of Observium's functionality is SNMP.
If a device doesn't do SNMP, it's not a device for us. It's a lightbulb, or a banana. It can't go into our interface, because we'd need 10 trillion if() statments to handle all of the things it didn't provide, and you'd end up with completely blank pages with a hostname at the top.

Hi
Yes, this is exactly what we need. We have a bunch of wlan aps that are managed by a wlan controller and you cannot query them with snmp directly. However (in addition to the wlan controller which is already monitored via Observium) i want all aps to be monitored via ping only to be able to see issues like poe-failure, switch/cable failure etc.
Best,
Thomas

If you haven't already; add the Observium host as a device.
Then add the icmp probe to your Observium device.

Hi I don't really get it sorry, it seems that you can add the probe check after the device is added to Observium. However, how can i add the device (./add_device.php or via ui) to Observium if it doesn't speak SNMP. For me it always fails with Could not reach apar01 with given SNMP parameters using v1. Hi How can i add a device which cannot (!) speak any snmp and only responds to ping/icmp requests? We have an Aruba wlan setup (Mobility Master and two Mobility Controllers) and i want to add the aps to Observium, so that they are monitored but only by ping/icmp. (The MM and the two MCs are already added to Observium, but i cannot see if one AP went offline or came back online again) The aps cannot speak any snmp when managed by the MM or MC, thats why it fails when i try to add one via ./add_device.php I appreciate any help :) Best, Thomas -- Thomas Stather IT Services VCP4, VCP6-DCV, VCP6.5-DCV Tel: +49 6221 486 628 Fax: +49 6221 486 561 Bevor Sie diese Mail ausdrucken, prüfen Sie bitte ob dies wirklich nötig ist. hello, has a solution or workaround been found for this? I would have liked to have had some devices in monitoring that are not SNMP capable. Just a ping test. I have heard that this is possible via the probe. Just wondering how to add a device in Observium...when adding it always checks the snmp. Thanks in advance
Give this a read:

Dear, We bought the license to monitor devices via ping-check (with the probe functionality). "Observium is designed to collect and display data from SNMP-capable devices, but not every device supports SNMP. In order to monitor non-SNMP capable devices, the probes system can be used to perform checks on non-SNMP devices". I am just wondering how we can add a device in observium that cannot handle snmp?
This is not possible, because the "devices" list is a list of SNMP capable devices.
Practically every single aspect of the "devices" list is tied to the existence of SNMP. It is fundamentally not possible to put non-SNMP devices in there any more than it's possible to realistically put fish in an aviary.
If you need to ping non-SNMP capable devices, follow the guide in the documentation on how to add probes to the Observium-device entry.

ok, I understand the use of probes. But how to connect a probe to a non-snmp device. I can only select a device from the list of snmp devices already added.
Thanks

Hi,
A probe needs to be 'linked' to a device. Such that the probe is executed when the linked device is polled. Note that the probe always runs from the Observium poller (i.e. the probe is not executed on the linked device). In our environment, the Observium poller is already monitored by Observium itself, thus we do link such probes to the Observium poller device (incidentally, the poller IS the host that runs the probes, but that's a detail). We had plans to actually build an additional host that would be a seperate Observium poller, to which we would assign all the ping probes and being his own poller, would run the ping probes. This may not scale however, as all the probes are run sequentially (afaik) when that specific host is polled.
HTH,
Ahmed.
