Hi everyone,
I have a big doubt with de Custom OID feature in Observium, I have recently installed the CE and work fine but in my network exist a satelital node with Hughes Technology, like virtual IPGWs, CDSCP, DNCC and other proprietary devices. My question is, can I add these devices for monitoring with the feature Custom OID in the subscription edition? I already have de MIBS from the vendor, but my boss want to be sure that paying the subscription we will be able to monitorize the node.
I don't have too much experience with SNMP that's why I'm asking for your help. On other tools like PRTG or OpManager I was able to monitorized the node, but since Observium is too much affordable for our company and I really have a preference for the Observium web GUI. I would like to do this on Observium.
Thanks in advance.
Sorry for my poor english

Short answer: Yes.
Longer answer: Yes, but not in the same way. You can monitor any OID you like, but they don't get integrated into the seamless view of the device that Obserivum normally gives you. If you have only a small percentage (10% ?) of nodes like this, Observium is still probably a good tool.
If these unusual nodes are very common in your network, then perhaps consider a different tool, one that's more MIB-oriented and isn't as "smart" about understanding how devices' OIDs fit together - then all your monitoring will be equal... just not as well-displayed.
We have this problem with, e.g. TrippLite PDUs. But that's 2 devices out of ~200, so we just accept the awkward display of certain OIDs on those devices.

Hi Luis Think of Custom OID, more for single devices, where you doing something that is not in a SNMP MIB.
If you have a MIB it is fairly easy to and the code to that is need to support the device you have. Based on my understanding of the observium code, the code can be divided in 4 level of work. 1. Basic "OS" support. Vendor ID, hardware ID, firmware version, memory, cpu. 2. sensors and status. (Simlare to 1. but you need to define more parameters to make it work) 3. Ethernet like devices. ( I have never work with how they are added, but to it looks to more work then 2.) 4. UI and database work (if you need the data to have a better presentation, than a list.)
