changing interface name error in log when not changed
I've started to have a new repeating error in observium every run stating an interface name has changed. I've confirmed it's not changed.
2026-10-05 17:45:26 et-0/0/47 Interface changed (attrib): [circuit] 19151|01160001|01|000028EB|ET-0/0/47|QFX27|TAMSFLDE|0102.PP40.PT -> 19151|01160001|01|000028EB|ET-0/0/47|QFX27|TAMSFLDE|0102.PP40.PT009:10 2026-10-05 17:40:24 et-0/0/47 Interface changed (attrib): [circuit] 19151|01160001|01|000028EB|ET-0/0/47|QFX27|TAMSFLDE|0102.PP40.PT -> 19151|01160001|01|000028EB|ET-0/0/47|QFX27|TAMSFLDE|0102.PP40.PT009:10 2026-10-05 17:35:27 et-0/0/47 Interface changed (attrib): [circuit] 19151|01160001|01|000028EB|ET-0/0/47|QFX27|TAMSFLDE|0102.PP40.PT -> 19151|01160001|01|000028EB|ET-0/0/47|QFX27|TAMSFLDE|0102.PP40.PT009:10
Looking at the interface I see the following, and it matches the description et-0/0/47 CUST: 365DATACENTERS (AS19151) {19151|01160001|01|000028EB|ET-0/0/47|QFX27|TAMSFLDE|0102.PP40.PT009:10} [IX-BASE]
This matches the config on the port:
description "CUST: 365DATACENTERS (AS19151) {19151|01160001|01|000028EB|ET-0/0/47|QFX27|TAMSFLDE|0102.PP40.PT009:10} [IX-BASE]";
And what SNMP comes back with:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.600 = STRING: CUST: 365DATACENTERS (AS19151) {19151|01160001|01|000028EB|ET-0/0/47|QFX27|TAMSFLDE|0102.PP40.PT009:10} [IX-BASE]
I'm on 26.9.15239 (rolling) (29th September 2026).
Any idea? Can I ignore this?
Hi,
Your circuit ID (the value in curly braces {}) is longer than 64 characters, and Observium can't store more than that.
It looks like you recently changed it to a longer value, which is why these messages started.

I thought this was a 256 byte limit on the SNMP level from the description?
Where's this 64 byte limit? I didn't see anything here https://docs.observium.org/port_descr_parsing/

Yea, this one has the patch panel in it which is longer now. This is the first one we pushed like this.
Thanks
Hi,
The 255 limit in the documentation applies to the whole description (ifAlias).
Each parsed part of it is saved in a separate database field,
and the circuit field was limited to 64 characters. That limit wasn't documented.
I've increased it in revision 15280 (rolling). Once you've updated, apply the database schema update:
./discovery.php -u
After that, the full circuit ID will be saved, and the repeating log messages will stop on their own.

Thanks! I've confirmed this works. shows up in the db now as 255, that's great.
