Re: [Observium] Problem with the Mail Alerting
Hello,
Thanks for your answer, where I can find a tutorial to configure the checker, because the wiki is not clear for me. And in the earlier version the mail alert was automatical, why this feature was abandoned.
Best regards

If test mail works, your config works. If you don't get alert mails, either there is a problem with the actual alerter or with your checkers. Please show your checkers, and check whether the "alerted" column in the test list has a value or says Never.

If test mail works, your config works. If you don't get alert mails, either there is a problem with the actual alerter or with your checkers. Please show your checkers, and check whether the "alerted" column in the test list has a value or says Never.

Too many Entity matches - it's AND logic, so multiple bgpPeerRemoteAs entities will not work. You'll have to build five rules, one to accommodate each AS.

If test mail works, your config works. If you don't get alert mails, either there is a problem with the actual alerter or with your checkers. Please show your checkers, and check whether the "alerted" column in the test list has a value or says Never.

You will want to create an Entity Type “Port” alert.
I would use the following conditions to make sure you’re alerting on interfaces that are in service but down.
ifAdminStatus eq up ifOperStatus eq down
Device and Entity Match should be * if you want to match on all devices, all ports. Otherwise, use port entities/metrics like these:

I had trouble finding this too based on the wiki then stumbled upon it. In the menu with the globe icon, you will find alert checks and you can configure what to watch for. Then per device you can configure where to send alerts, if you want to override the snmp contact.

If test mail works, your config works. If you don't get alert mails, either there is a problem with the actual alerter or with your checkers. Please show your checkers, and check whether the "alerted" column in the test list has a value or says Never.

Your fans and power supply are not ports. They can't be matching if your entity type is set correctly.

You will want to create an Entity Type "Port" alert.
I would use the following conditions to make sure you're alerting on interfaces that are in service but down.
ifAdminStatus eq up ifOperStatus eq down
Device and Entity Match should be * if you want to match on all devices, all ports. Otherwise, use port entities/metrics like these:

Too many Entity matches - it's AND logic, so multiple bgpPeerRemoteAs entities will not work. You'll have to build five rules, one to accommodate each AS.

Nope. :(
I tried it myself, and after it didn't work I looked into how the alert checkers are stored and generated. While I only have a rudimentary understanding of how it works, the way the data is stored in the database and later evaluated wouldn't ever match.
Example entity_attribs for a BGP peer match w/ CenturyLink:
[{"value":"209","condition":"eq","metric":"bgpPeerAdminStatus","attrib":"bgpPeerRemoteAs"}]
Example if you used some kind of regex:
[{"value":"100|200|300|400|500","condition":"eq","metric":"bgpPeerAdminStatus","attrib":"bgpPeerRemoteAs"}]
When the rule is later evaluated, it will likely try to see if any bgpPeerRemoteAs matches "100|200|300|400|500" (literally), which none will. There's nothing to parse the regex and generate individual associations for each value.
I might also be talking out of my ass, but I believe that this is the case.

If test mail works, your config works. If you don't get alert mails, either there is a problem with the actual alerter or with your checkers. Please show your checkers, and check whether the "alerted" column in the test list has a value or says Never.

BGP example, alerting on specific AS:
Entity Type: BGP Peer
Conditions: bgpPeerState ne established bgpPeerAdminStatus eq start
Device Match: *
Entity Match: bgpPeerRemoteAS eq XXXXX
Works like a champ. Not all of the metric/attribute values are available on the Wiki. For many of them, you can find out what they might be by taking a look at the database and hunting down the particular entity, like bgpPeerState and bgpPeerAdminStatus:
SELECT bgpPeerState,bgpPeerAdminStatus FROM bgpPeers;
In the example above, I'm looking for anything that isn't "established" (idle, active) but is administratively-enabled (start).

I had to get some help there as well, then I realized that in the wiki is a list of metrics and attributes.
http://www.observium.org/wiki/Alerting_Metrics_and_Attributes#Device
So for bgp you might monitor the bgpPeerState

Is there a way to set an contact/email per device name scheme? So lets say I want wanted .us.domain.com names to go to the US NOC and the jp.domain.com names to go to the Japan NOC? Sounds like you can set a different email per device, but that real hard to manage if you have a lot devices.

I wouldn't even know where to start doing something like that... :D
adam.
This is definitely possible, you can make some changes to includes/polling/system.inc.php so that it sets various variables based on hostname. I currently have it setting the location based on hostname and you can also set the contact based on hostname (Or portion of hostname) as well.
What you can do is edit the above file and look for this line (Should be around line 106 on an unmodified file)...
$poll_device['sysContact'] = str_replace(array('"', '"') ,"", $poll_device['sysContact']);
After this you can add something like the following...
if (preg_match("/us.domain.com/i", $device['hostname']))
{ $poll_device['sysContact'] = "usnoc@your.domain.com"; }
if (preg_match("/jp.domain.com/i", $device['hostname'])) { $poll_device['sysContact'] = "jpnoc@your.domain.com"; }
Save and then during the next poll you should see the contact info updated for all matching hosts.
