Not sure what direction to go with this. My instance of observium has been working great ever since I deployed it. A peer of mine decided to add hosts to the host file, and in doing so, somehow messed with something that does not allow us to log back in via web/gui. I can ssh to the device and have looked at every possible log in /var/log, but do not see anything that stands out. I also try to investigate the log while I attempt logging in via gui, and nothing is seen. I took a look at the install documentation to see if anything stands out there, that may lead me in the right direction but do not find anything, other than probably reinstalling which I am trying to avoid (i'll have to look at how to preserve current files, etc once reinstalling if i go down that road). Is there anything else that I can possibly look at to get a better direction and try to isolate this? I can't imagine him modifying the /etc/hosts file would affect logging into observium via the front end gui.
Thanks for any help you guys can provide!

Have you tried to make a new user with a level of 10? He might have reset your password. Why was he in the hosts file of your Observium box?

Yea i used the ./adduser.php to add a test user, and it added it succesffully. however, when trying that new user on the gui, it does the same thing. It looks like its loading, refreshes, and stays on the login screen.
He was updating entries with IP and hostname info in order to add them through the gui with the hostname.

Don't set a complicated password for your test user. Do something like:
./add_user.php test test 10
Then try to get in and change your passwords.

After reading the thread but before this email, that was my suggestion too. Login screen to login screen without error message usually does mean that the session can't be saved to disk :)

Hello there,
I wonder if anybody can help me.
After upgrading from community to subscription version, I was happily browsing the new features, but after some time (about half hour) all users here got logged out and nobody could login any more. No error messages, we just get the login page again.
My hard disk is not full. I successfully created a new admin user but also cannot login. I cleaned the cache, the history and the cookies of the browser. If I check the table authlog in the database, it reports both old and new admin as regularly logged in.
Is there anything I am missing? Any step I forgot during upgrade? Any cache/session I should clear server side?
Your help is welcome.
Best regards,
Marco

Marco specified that's not the case, however, those are all the symptoms of failing PHP session creation indeed.
Check if /tmp also isn't full?
I had the same issue on my test box a few days ago; there an apache restart fixed it. No idea what caused it.

I restarted Apache and rebooted the server, still the same. I tried making a fresh Observium installation with a new database, new admins and by trying with the trunk and the stable version. Same result. No partition is full. The tmp partition has a 2% usage only. The only observium files I get in there are observium-agent-apache and observium-agent-mysql. I cannot find any related error message anywhere. What's weird is that it was working fine, then it suddenly stopped. No idea what happened, but this is a production monitoring system for us and I have to fix it asap! Rolling back to the old backup did not work either, still cannot login.
Looking forward to hear from anybody who may have any other suggestion. Thanks!

Hi,
There were some changes made recently, but no one who upgraded reported any issues at the time.
It's particularly odd if it happens to a /new/ installation (assuming it also had a new database).
Do you get anything useful if you put /debug=1/ in the URL?

Hi Adam,
thanks for your reply. I get no extra info by adding /debug=1/ to the url. You had also suggested to launch a new discovery for upgrading the database, but that's actually what probably broke the system, as the database is the only thing I had insanely not made a backup of, before upgrading. Now a roll back does not work, probably because the database is corrupted.
As somebody stated earlier, it looks very much like a php session issue. However, what I do know is that I re-made a fresh installation by using the stable version this time, and it worked.
Now the question is: how can I move the devices database without importing the corruption to the new database? If I just import the devices tables and the rrd folder and I launch a discovery, would that work?
thanks for your help. Best regards,
Marco

Hi Adam,
thanks for your reply.
Best regards,
Marco

Hi,
There were some changes made recently, but no one who upgraded reported any issues at the time.
It's particularly odd if it happens to a /new/ installation (assuming it also had a new database).
Do you get anything useful if you put /debug=1/ in the URL?

Hi Adam,
we were running Debian Wheezy 3.2.46-1+deb7u1 x86_64 with PHP Version 5.4.4-14+deb7u8, Apache/2.2.22 and MySql 5.5.31
I did import the devices table to the new system now, run the discovery and imported the rrds. Everything worked perfectly.. However, I should have imported the ports table as well, because all ports id have changed and our integrated systems relying on those id's are in panic now.
The syslog is stored somewhere else, as I was getting a weird php memory segmentation error there as well, so it had stopped working under observium (that's also why I wanted to try a different hardware/system).
Thanks a lot for your help. It was not a very smooth upgrade to the subscription version, but our production monitoring system is running again :)
Cheers, Marco

I wonder if anybody can help me.
After upgrading from community to subscription version, I was happily browsing the new features, but after some time (about half hour) all users here got logged out and nobody could login any more. No error messages, we just get the login page again.
My hard disk is not full. I successfully created a new admin user but also cannot login. I cleaned the cache, the history and the cookies of the browser. If I check the table authlog in the database, it reports both old and new admin as regularly logged in.
Is there anything I am missing? Any step I forgot during upgrade? Any cache/session I should clear server side?
Your help is welcome.
Best regards,
Marco

How about backing up the host file then remove what he added? On Feb 11, 2014 12:04 PM, "Luis Quintana" sla07@earthlink.net wrote:
_______________________________________________ observium mailing list observium@observium.org http://postman.memetic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/observium

I wanted to try that with a default host file config that anyone could provide (minus their data of course). On Feb 11, 2014, at 1:13 PM, Bruce Winters bruce.winters@gmail.com wrote:
