adding private ip address
Dear Team,
We are trying to add private IP address to the observium. Our picture: the observium server is having a private IP address tho' NATed to a public ip address. I am trying to add the private IP( of a switch/router), and it gives me the following error
Try to add 192.168.128.1: Could not resolve 192.168.128.1. Devices skipped: 1.
Does this mean that, the devices can't be added using their IP? Or should the IP be DNS mapped( resolvable )?

Thank you. What do you mean by "add a host file entry on the server" ? Should I add in the /etc/hosts as follows ( without private DNS)
vi /etc/hosts
192.168.x.x server example.server ------- entry for the observium server? 192.168.y.y sw1 sw1.server ----------------entry for switch or router?
Will this work?

Just add the hostname <-> ip mappings to your /etc/hosts file.

I added in /etc/hosts as
192.168.128.1 sw1 sw1.xxx.local
I tried adding the host as sw1 and sw1.xxx.local still no progress. It's saying not able to resolve. I suppose we have to have a private DNS which resolves IP into hosts and vice versa. Are my thoughts correct?

Check the /etc/nsswitch.conf file on the observium host to make sure it's actually using the /etc/hosts file for lookups. You can do this quickly with the following command:
grep 'hosts' /etc/nsswitch.conf
You should see something like "hosts: files dns" or possibly a more complicated version. The important thing is that 'files' appear before 'dns' in the list. You can edit the file if necessary, just don't change the other lines unless you know what you're doing. You may also have to restart the nscd service (or just reboot) to make the changes take effect.
