A general questions on apps vs sniped extend ?
Hi,
I am new to observium and I am trying to learn the "system".
Last week I developed a "app" that shows some status. The client side was super simple but it was somewhat cumbersome on the serverside (find all files to update and definitions etc).
This week I tried to use snmpd extend to display the same information. This was super simple both on the client and on the server side (adda custom oid) and it works with alerts!
My question is therefore in what circumstances are the "apps" useful? At least for my simple example I did not find any benefits of apps over using snmpd extend and a custom OID. Specially as configuring an app is more cumbersome (on the server side).

Hi Jonas,
The apps system was a big mistake I made in ~2012 at short notice to solve a problem quickly.
It's useful for showing lots of graphs for an app, but too limited and inflexible.
If you just need to collect a couple of metrics for something, customoid is probably easier.
Adam.
