It depends how big your installation is :-)
Like all things, you need to scale your own installation.
We now do more caching instead of repeated lookups, requiring more ram on large installs.

Ok, I think I can live with that for the time being, but having 10 users accessing observium will lead to 5GB of memory usage for Apache alone O_O'

This memory is only used for a few 100ms per page load, it's doubtful that they'd hit it concurrently very often :)
