Hi All,
Any of you guys using the groups system? If so, what for? What's missing? What changes would make it more useful?
Cheers, adam.

We use the group system to group routers and switches with different functions, like core-routers, peering-routers, backbone-routers, edge-routers and oobm-routers. It would be really nice to be able to filter on a group in the different pages where you currently can filter on specific devices like the eventpage, syslogpage so that when I filter for syslog warnings from only edge-routers I don't have to manually select 100 devices from the huge list. Or for example quickly make a list of all backbone routers that have ports down or with errors. (In the ports-view there currently is a dropdown-menu called groups but its not populated with my created groups...)
Another thing I might find useful would be ability to filter on a group on the overview page and show everything only for that group (devices/ports/sensors-table, map, device alerts, recent eventlog entries) That would be cool to get a quick overview on a smaller group of devices.

That stuff isn't in the realms of impossibility!
Certainly it /should/ be possible to limit your global view to a single device group (non-device groups wouldn't make sense globally, and would be pretty difficult, I think).
Ports and Devices should already allow you to filter by group. We'll look at adding filtering to more pages!

The main thing I wanted the group system to be able to do was to view graphs by groups. There was a mechanism to do this at one stage, but it was clumsy and hard to find each time.
The sorts of things that I wanted to be able to do with the group system was to view all the traffic by datacenter, and by port type by datacenter. Also being able to group the environmental/health stats by datacenter. Then have all these easily accessible. I ended up writing a dashboard page (in Python not PHP sorry) for doing the traffic views using the data and graph URLs from Observium. But it would be nice to generalize that idea for different entity types.

Graphs by group is something I'm adding at the moment! :D

We currently use them to help isolate systems by site, function, OS, etc. As for what’s missing or needed. The ability to display the grouped objects with their specific graphs, similar to how the Apps display. Example: I want to display Traffic graphs for all ports in a group. One option for enabling this would be to add a button/checkbox option beside each graph as it’s being displayed to add it to a group. That way you could easily select each graph you want to group and mix and match.
The groups menu bar on the overview page, be able to add or remove group entity types.

I'm currently adding various display modes and graphs for various entity types through the groups system, which might do most of what you want.
I'm thinking of a good way to do "temporary" groups like you mention too, but haven't come up with a good way to do it, yet!
