Hi there! On our cisco catalyst 6509 I cant see Map and Neighbours under the Ports information, any Idea why?
I really like this feature, my hope is that I can be able to have a total network-map with all my switches one day, is there any plan to develope this further?
Regards Fredrik

Looks fine on our 6506 and 6509's. We're running pretty close to trunk though (r7405)

Code for CDP/LLDP/mapping hasn't changed in ages; likely the 6509 is not providing CDP information...

I can see them from another switch, but when I look after map / neighbours under ports menu under the 6500:s I dont have these options. It might be that we have them configured in VSS mode. Of cource cdp is enabled and I have a lot of neighbours using cli.
Have a nice weekend!

Tom, I'm tracking a problem right now with a 6509 and a 7609 that my system is polling..
I can go in and look at the specific device, ports screen, my ports menu bar will show:
Ports
Basic
Details
ARP/NDP Table
FDB Table
Graphs
Minigraphs
Quick Filters
Notice no neighbors or maps.
Sometimes I can manually force a neighbors discovery (./discovery.php -h whatever -m neighbours), and the system will immediately populate. but it looks like something has been recently broken, as watching a debug run of that process doesn't even show the server even attempt to make a query against the chassis. I even ran that against a Nexus 5548 that does currently show neighbours in the ports menu bar:
Ports
Basic
Details
ARP/NDP Table
FDB Table
Neighbours
Map
Graphs
Minigraphs
Sanitized debugs attached.

OK, not a debug, but note down at the bottom, CHANGES 51 added. And after a period of time, they go away.

Hi there!

Ron,
Weird. Issue is we'd need a bug log of the discovery where the neighbours disappear, because obviously below everything looks like it's hunky-dory... I do realize that's a hard one to acquire if it's unpredictable.

Well crap. Ignore those debugs. Apparently I couldn’t type “neighbours” correctly. Let’s try that again.

Tom, I’m tracking a problem right now with a 6509 and a 7609 that my system is polling….
I can go in and look at the specific device, ports screen, my ports menu bar will show:
Ports
Basic
Details
ARP/NDP Table
FDB Table
Graphs
Minigraphs
Quick Filters
Notice no neighbors or maps.
Sometimes I can manually force a neighbors discovery (./discovery.php –h whatever –m neighbours), and the system will immediately populate… but it looks like something has been recently broken, as watching a debug run of that process doesn’t even show the server even attempt to make a query against the chassis. I even ran that against a Nexus 5548 that does currently show neighbours in the ports menu bar:
Ports
Basic
Details
ARP/NDP Table
FDB Table
Neighbours
Map
Graphs
Minigraphs
Sanitized debugs attached.

I agree. why does the system randomly drop all the neighbors on a later discovery. Not sure how we'll be able to track that one. It's interesting that we're only seeing it on Cat65xx/76xx platforms though, I'm not seeing this on any other platforms I'm polling, and that's a bunch. If you have any ideas how we can log the automated discovery processes that run on those boxen.
Far as the Win32 stuff, only thing I've found that really works is the HaneWin daemon, and even then, it's not perfect. I've noticed that with Broadcom NICs, it's reporting half duplex even though BACS is showing (as well as the lack of error count that would otherwise be seen) full duplex, and so the switch log fills up with CDP-4-DUPLEX_MISMATCH error messages. To that end, I've had to write a logging discriminator to just drop all those error messages, which isn't the best idea, but.
Really wish someone could port ladvd to win32.

Well crap. Ignore those debugs. Apparently I couldn't type "neighbours" correctly. Let's try that again.

Code for CDP/LLDP/mapping hasn't changed in ages; likely the 6509 is not providing CDP information...

Hi there!
On our cisco catalyst 6509 I cant see Map and Neighbours under the Ports information, any Idea why?
I really like this feature, my hope is that I can be able to have a total network-map with all my switches one day, is there any plan to develope this further?
Regards
Fredrik

As an addition to this, all of my 6500's have lost neighbors. A 6509E and a pair of 06E's. All running the same code.
Interestingly enough running ./discovery.php -h catit.aa.arbor.net -m neighbours caused them to show up, although running discovery without -m wasn't working (well it worked, but didn't populate the neighbors.) I'm betting they will go away when the discovery cronjob runs.
All neighbors are CDP in my case.
Any debug output I can give you? Running r7506

I agree… why does the system randomly drop all the neighbors on a later discovery. Not sure how we’ll be able to track that one. It’s interesting that we’re only seeing it on Cat65xx/76xx platforms though, I’m not seeing this on any other platforms I’m polling, and that’s a bunch. If you have any ideas how we can log the automated discovery processes that run on those boxen…
Far as the Win32 stuff, only thing I’ve found that really works is the HaneWin daemon, and even then, it’s not perfect… I’ve noticed that with Broadcom NICs, it’s reporting half duplex even though BACS is showing (as well as the lack of error count that would otherwise be seen) full duplex, and so the switch log fills up with CDP-4-DUPLEX_MISMATCH error messages. To that end, I’ve had to write a logging discriminator to just drop all those error messages, which isn’t the best idea, but…
Really wish someone could port ladvd to win32.

Ron,
Weird. Issue is we'd need a bug log of the discovery where the neighbours disappear, because obviously below everything looks like it's hunky-dory... I do realize that's a hard one to acquire if it's unpredictable.
PS: what are you using to do CDP from Windows boxes?

Further stuff of note… going to the device event log and searching for just “Neighbours”, I get the following back:

Ports
Basic Details ARP/NDP Table FDB Table Graphs Minigraphs Quick Filters
Notice no neighbors or maps.
Sometimes I can manually force a neighbors discovery (./discovery.php –h whatever –m neighbours), and the system will immediately populate… but it looks like something has been recently broken, as watching a debug run of that process doesn’t even show the server even attempt to make a query against the chassis. I even ran that against a Nexus 5548 that does currently show neighbours in the ports menu bar:
Ports
Basic Details ARP/NDP Table FDB Table Neighbours Map Graphs Minigraphs
Sanitized debugs attached.
…Ron

Code for CDP/LLDP/mapping hasn't changed in ages; likely the 6509 is not providing CDP information...

Looks fine on our 6506 and 6509's. We're running pretty close to trunk though (r7405)

Hi there!
On our cisco catalyst 6509 I cant see Map and Neighbours under the Ports information, any Idea why?
I really like this feature, my hope is that I can be able to have a total network-map with all my switches one day, is there any plan to develope this further?
Regards
Fredrik
