questions about email alert notification formats
Hi, I have 2 questions about this.
First, is it possible to attach a notification format per contact. We are sending out text alert notifications using number@vtext.commailto:number@vtext.com and I think the format is too big for vtext.com to accept. Is it possible that on a contact, scale down the notification?
Second, is it possible to change the format of the general "recover" email?
thanks
Tony
Tony, We switched sending our emails to the SMS gateway instead of the text gateway of our carrier and its much better. I believe Verizons SMS to email gateway is [ mailto:number@vzwpix.com | number@vzwpix.com ] . Its worth a try.
Thank you

Kevin, great tip…I have made that change.
I would still like a way to have a different template for txt notifications…so I can shorten them etc… Can anyone tell me if this is possible?

It’s not currently possible. I’m not sure how difficult it’d be to allow per-contact templates. I’ll put it on the list to look at!

Adam, thanks, I would really appreciate that.
Can you please address my second question…is it possible to modify the templates for the “recover” notifications? I want to shorten that up…I don’t mean contact specific..i mean all “recover” notifications.
Thanks

We used (at a former workplace) an external bash script to generate shorter SMS notifications with just the relevant variables. In our case, we had our own SMS gateway, so the script did an authenticated curl push into the web interface. It also sent condensed recovery notifications.
https://docs.observium.org/alerting_transports/#script
There's no reason that you couldn't use an external script to generate the "normal" alert notifications and recoveries for standard email delivery.

This is the correct way to do custom sms formats, imo.
The email templates are designed for email. The template system was never really fully implemented and no one really uses it, so it’s not a good way to do this sort of thing.

Hi, is there a way to test the script I created from within Observium? I know I can just run the script from the command line, but I don’t get the environment variables etc. I would like to have a way that I can use an Observium utility to launch the script and simulate a notification.
Thanks

Hi Tony,
If you create a contact and point it at the script you’re writing, you can use ./test_alert.php -c <contact_id> to send a test notification.
You can do the same sort of thing with a PHP script using the webhook transport. Script and webhook are intended for people to be able to quickly write their own code to handle notifications.
