Hi Guys,
On the main dashboard you see a google maps picture.
None of my devices are displayed correctly on the map.
How do I specify which devices appear where? I assume it’s to do with the Contact field.

Its done by looking in the SNMP sysLocation field of your device. If you enter a valid address on your device then Observium will map it properly. Any string that Google Maps can translate to a location will usually work :)

I have this problem too....
It was working perfectly before the upgrade to the version of Observium OpenSource released this year.
In fact my map just shows a blue screen now..... zooming out doesn't show land at all?

Actually just tried on Google Maps directly and it finds the address fine.....
My address syntax:
building no. street name, city, zip/postcode

Ours is also locked at a random spot in the sea, but when I zoom out, I can see land.
Perhaps your google maps part is broken? Maybe these are different issues? I enter the street address that I would use in google maps in the location on the SNMP settings for the devices, but this does not show the devices in the locations on Observium dashboard :/

Ok this is interesting!
I figured out where I end up.... just off the coast off West Africa..... The closest places being Luanda and Congo?
However, the actual Green Location Tag is showing in the North Atlantic just west of Portugal.
It might be something to do with the String Interpreter?? Or perhaps something needs to be adjusted in the code??
I even tried adding the country but no go :-(

It ends up on the canary islands, which is where we put devices we can't find a location for.

My Green Location is showing in Ponta Delgada....
I have no devices there.
Taking an example from the Cisco docs : https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&a...
it doesn't look like there is a specific spec for the string format, so I guess it's left to the software to make a best guess assumption in correlation with Google Maps?

Kaya, I ran into the exact same issues - but only in the lab with NAT'd IP's. I installed the exact same setup on my production and it read just fine. That having been said, if the device does not specify its physical location in SNMP configs on the polled device, then the location will not work period end of story as it goes... I noticed it only does this on connections over MPLS connections to an ISP. If you have a non-mpls connection to the provider, than you will not see this issue. Still not sure why this is...I can guess, but I would rather not get into that at this point in time. Oh yeah - we need a new string for RANCID integration on CentOS7. Due to the install directory CentOS installs in, it makes integrating Rancid a little hairy.
