Hi Team,
I need the best Monitoring Tool & Ticketing System support. Does Observium have the 2?
Thanks, Mulenga

I don't think anything does both of those jobs, and anything which did would do at least one of those jobs incredibly badly!
Adam.

Cheers Adam. So for starters, I need to implement a monitoring tool that can monitor Switches, Routers, Base Stations, Point to Point Radios, Servers, etc. What's required?

That's a pretty difficult question, since there are a lot of unknown variables.
The best way to chose an NMS to to try a few and keep the one you found the most useful.
Comparing feature lists isn't often the best way, since usability is often more important.
Adam.

I've used Observium and would like to adopt it as the primary Monitoring tool. Although the one I am using has limited features. We need a fully fledged version that can give us reports on performance, etc

When I find someone who can actually articulate what a "report" is, we might add the ability to generate them.

Basically, it should be able to:
1. Show the uptime of a device or group of devices over a period of time. 2. The utilization of specific list of interfaces. 3. Jitter/Packet loss of a device or a group of devices.

These things you'd do with a combination of the group system and IP SLA probes on Cisco devices.

Also worth noting Mulenga,
You can almost certainly trigger basic ticket creation in your ticketing system/s using the alerting functionality, e.g. email based alerts, or alerting via API in some form.
NOTE: support for the API may not exist yet and you may need to write it yourself or engage the Observium team to develop it.
You will need to be using Observium Professional for the alert functionality.

You need to give Observium website another read before doing anything else.
There’s a whole bunch of handy information on it.

You need to give Observium website another read before doing anything else. There’s a whole bunch of handy information on it.

That's a pretty difficult question, since there are a lot of unknown variables.
The best way to chose an NMS to to try a few and keep the one you found the most useful.
Comparing feature lists isn't often the best way, since usability is often more important.

Its fine. I will explore other licensed NMS'. ManageEngine has great features, only that the prices are steep.

We create "reports" from our environment by using dokuwiki as the structure, generating the relevant graphs via cron/rrdtool. We combine several graphs together from different sources/devices, some are subtracted from others, it's virtually limitless what you could do.
Each month, the report is automagically ready for somebody to look at and add the various notes and annotations. Then export to pdf & "file" it with the executive. The wiki then contains every historical report.
Took a little effort to set up, but hasn't needed much feeding the last 18 months or so.

My 2 cents,
Plenty of options out there for anyone who wants more than what Observium can give at this point.
Most of them cost more than they’re worth, and usually have a heavy Windows focus and are not very good in Linux centric or network service provider type environments. e.g. often tailored to Managed Service Provider’s who deal primarily with Windows desktops and servers. Some are better than others at dealing with network kit or enterprisey stuff like Java web apps; most are not very good at it.
Off the top of my head,
LabTech/ConnectWise n-Able Autotask Continuum ManageEngine’s suite of bodgy munged together open source bits and pieces covered in a dash of Java flavoured dirt.
Spiceworks as you mentioned.
RMM is often the acronym used. Particularly in MSP land.
google.com/search?q=Remote+Management+Monitoring+RMM
They’ve all generally got the same principle though.
1) Monitor stuff with SNMP, WMI, Ping, TCP etc. Monitor configuration changes where possible. Often via a central agent within a remote network or an agent on each monitored system.
2) Automatically create tickets and/or tasks to help automate workflow. Often includes time tracking capabilities, e.g. response time for ticket, response time to repair, billable time etc.
3) Generate fancy web/PDF based reports and dashboards based on SLA (availability - maintenance windows) , problem tickets and other events, etc etc. Often features integration to accounting systems so that billable time can be attached to a invoices.
Number 3 is where the value is at though, particularly for MSP’s who need to bill for the services they’re delivering/monitoring and doing support work around, and back it up with evidence of things happening.
Observium’s kinda got 1 and 2 if you put some time in to get what you want. It does not have 3 without a lot of work.
