The original design of Observium was to enforce valid hostnames. We no
longer enforce this for adding devices (because some networks are run by
insane people who like looking at huge lists of nearly identical IPs),
but a lot of the autodiscovery code still uses sysName and forward dns
lookups to verify if a device should really be autodiscovered.
Changing this behaviour would involve time, so one would have to be
persuasive with one's justification. :>
