Hi all- I'm using level 10 for admins and that is working fine, however, with level 1 users they can log in but cannot see any devices or ports. Is there something else I need to set up inside the application? Using latest stable svn. No graphs linux

Hi, I am new to observium and after having multiple deploys I discovered that it works mostly really well, but on my linux machines it seems I have an error with drawing the graphs for memory, cpu and that... Anyone got a tip where I should start (client/server side) I have no clue at this point :) My esxi works, my cisco works, but no linux... :| Cheers, Tamino

Scaling Observium with Rancid, Smokeping, and Syslog-ng

Anyone have suggestions or real world experiences they could share scaling Observium with Rancid, Smokeping, and Syslog-ng. I have about 1000 router/switches in my network that equate to about 30k of interfaces. Half the interfaces will probably be down, although I'm not sure that makes a difference. Basically I'm wondering if I should break out my tools to individual VMs and use something like NFS for Observium to be able to see Rancid,Smokeping, and Syslog-ng data. Feel free to shoot me a private note. I appreciate any feedback. -Chip

ad ldap config brings up a blank page

I'm hoping someone could provide a little assistance helping me debug this problem. I'm seeing a blank home page when I change the authentication type to ldap. As soon as I put it back to mysql the home page displays. I'm using a working ldap config currently be used on a Ubuntu 12.04. I'm attempting to migrate over to a corporate supported RHEL 6 box. I dont see anything any log file indicating an ldap issue or configuration. Here's my ldap config. SELinux is disabled. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Email alerts - Duration

Is the "Duration" field in email alerts working as intended? I offlined a BGP peer to force an alert and the first ALERT message says "Duration 6 days, 16h 59m 55s" If this is trying to tell me the last time it alerted it is incorrect, because this router was offline on Monday for maintenance. Additionally when it came back up (under 10 minutes) I would expect the duration to tell me how long the alert was active, instead I get this: 6 days, 17h 9m 44s. That's the 10 minutes (two polling cycles) the device was off. But where is the rest of that value coming from? Hi Adam, Do you provide initial configuration of Observium as professional services? If so, what are your rates? I need Observium to do following. 1. Standard discovery and monitoring of about 20 devices. 18 Cisco ASA firewalls, a few routers and a few switches. 2. Get alerts to work via email. If something goes down/up, want an alert 3. Get syslog module working. Collect syslog from all devices. May be setup syslog filters(if possible via Observium or syslog-ng) and alert on some messages. 4. Integrate with Smokeping - Optional. Subversion

Since the subnet that our Observium server is blocked from the internet, I am unable to directly update using subversion. Anyone know a way to relay the subversion from svn à me with a windows client à the observium server? I SVN d/led the latest stable with Tortoise then FTPed it to the server but it seems to have broken some stuff. Transit weirdness

I have had our net guy fill in the ifdescr with the appropriate string (I think) on some of the devices in order to get things to start working, but I'm seeing some weirdness. For example the string is set to: Transit: [200Mbit] {ATT-BKEC.946484 - Vz-46.KFGS.300721} And on the front page, the Overall Transit Traffic graph is showing up: But when I click on the graph to drill down, I get this: Total Graph for ports of type : Transit None found. Any ideas? I'm on the CE version. Smokeping Integration

We've got smokeping up and running on the same server as observium and followed the instructions for integration. Graphs are displaying correctly in the smokeping web interface but observium is having "error drawing graph" issues. Ping tab has been added so it is reading the smokeping config correctly. RRD's are formatted based on the name of the host (using _ instead of . since smokeping doesn't support that), but still no joy. Any ideas? Draw/Syslog Errors

Hi guys, I have encountered a bit of a weird error today, Observium is showing draw errors and missing syslogs for a couple (7) of my network devices. Observium reporting

All - Hello. We are evaluating Observium for our enterprise network metrics and are pretty impressed with the community package. However, before we invest in the subscription version, I have a few questions. 1. Are there any reporting/analysis functions in the subscription version? Our CIO is interested in measuring 95% on all of our regional office site links in order to analyze capacity planning. 2. How mature is the alerting in the subscription version? Is it possible to configure alerting based on anything other than a percentage of link speed and interface up/down? 3. I have been unable to get any email functionality working in the community version. Is it supposed to work? Thanks in advance! NetApp Clustered OnTap

I’ve been testing the community edition for a few months and have been pretty impressed. I’m hoping to get the subscription version soon. Even small amounts of money can sometimes be difficult to spend with university bureaucracy. We have a few NetApp filers. The first is a bit older and is detected correctly and Observium gives quite a bit of useful information about it. The second is running the newer Clustered OnTap OS, and Observium has no idea what it is, doesn’t recognize it as a NetApp device or assign the correct icon, and doesn’t pull any data from it. Anyone have any idea if this is more up to date in the subscription version? 95% rule and scaling

Is Observium capable of measuring/calculating the 95% rule on interfaces? Also is it possible to change scaling on ports, for example even though one of my customer ports is set on the device at 100Mbps, the link itself is only capable of 20Mbps. Is it possible to change the scale on that particular port to reflect the manageable bandwidth? Dan, consider lighting up a websvn instance in parallel to obs, pointed at your rancid depot. it’s got a nice layout, and you get a bit more in the granularity toolbag (e.g. permissions). our auditors love it. you lose a bit of the SPoG effect, but really it’s an ideal drill-down. aside: top 3 wish list (e.g., after obs alerting gets finished): - eigrp feature-parity with ospf/bgp - f5, palo & checkpoint device support (rancid is weak here also, so obs is in good company /grin/ ) - auto-thresholding sexiness (a math-inclined list member offered to contribute some framework for this a while back?) alerting wishlist items: - bark at me when the route count of established routing peer sessions (esp. bgp) changes from $baseline - bark at me for threshold deviations, esp. unnaturally lower-bound ones (e.g., ckt that normally pumps nMbps flatlines to zero) (tells me my edge peers probably did something stupid that they will blame me for anyway. knowing about it first helps. LOL). ps: - scale of syslog ingestion (or possibly the regurgitation thereof) might warrant some love. 7MM/day entries in volume makes for dreadfully long page loads. - anyone have the mysql agent script poking at an instance of mariadb? are your results in obs fully populated? somebody on the list did a bit of work last year to get alerts out via growl (iDevice: “prowl”) using the obs API. remind who that was? did it ever go anywhere? I recall having got it sort-of-working before it went on the back burner; want to resurrect the effort if possible. thx. R. apologies for needing the reminder(s). sadly, my operating platform is hobbled by a 60’s-era single-core analog CPU and a rather stingy amount of (non-ECC) memory.

New kind of device

Hi all ! I know that I ask about a lot of functionalities ... but you like me for that :-) So I'll to be as clear as possible (and as "English" as possible ...). Is it possible to add a new kind of device that is only polled with ping ? The primary goal is to know when distant server (hosted by partners) aren't reachable without asking to have access to their snmp daemon and community ... I imagine that it can be a huge work because it needs to bypass a lot of code but you could have think about it ... ? To be simple for everyone, this kind of device can be a new sort of server but without any snmp information (no device panel / no ports panel, etc...) and just be polled by the ping. And when a hosts is down the alerter send a mail / trap and the index.php put an information box to warn on "device down" like any others hosts. hi, We are very pleased by the use of the subscription version so far. At the moment we are monitoring 3.600 ports and have around 5000 alerts but the goal is to reach around 40.000 ports. Will this be a problem? I already see cpu load whenever i add a host with over 500 ports that is not evenly distributed if increase the cores of my machine. Please advise and keep up the great work. Sensor alert templates by device type

Noticed some new sensor alerts that popped up by default a few revs back now. Super sweet, firstly, so nice work guys. Secondly, the defaults naturally aren't quite right, ie 0. Is it possible to set a default sensor type by device/platform/OS rather than individually? For example, system voltage on one of our routers has a default of 2 to 2.7v, while it is actually running at 23.5 and thus throwing alerts. Can we set all networking devices or iOS switches or iOS version 12.?? to have the same defaults? [BUG] I got a blank page

Hi all ! Since a little modification on the config.php (adding a filter in [bad_if]) I got a blank page on my enterprise http://observium and the "./discovery.php -h none" doesn't output any information ... (usually it outputs the version - in green) I got the same problem last week when I updated the svn folder with CRON that force me to revert to an older version of my server ... Of course I reboot all the services (apache2, mysql ...) and I have upgraded the memory limit in the php.ini (like mentioned in the Observium FAQ) ... Any clues ? Somebody got the same problem ? Hi all, I am having problems with generating graphs for my Observium install. Hi Observiumers ! Is it possible to specify the email contact for each "alert checker" without setting it on the sysContact of all the devices ? Hello guys, at the moment we are not a subscribed customer, so maybe this mail is obsolet. We would love to have a feature to remove GeoLocation thing unter Devices-> Locations. In our environment the snmp location is filled with some kind of customer ID. Like: U100432. It would be great if observium could only group our switches by the customer id in the snmp location field. Thanks for your great work. Henrik
