Some of these could be known issues but I didn't see anything in the bugtracker and wanted to see if they were somehow unique to my installation. There are a couple pages that completely error out, the browser get's a failure trying to load. For me that is the main Inventory page under the overview tab, and the all ports page. I have currently 30 devices with ~16k ports in my system. For a page like the all ports page I would expect that to take some time to render as it's pulling together a lot of info for 16k interfaces, however after maybe 1-2 seconds it fails. Filtering under the traffic bills page doesn't seem to work, when I first started entering Bills I know I was able to filter by over/under quota, however now that I have 67 in it doesn't seem to work. Also I'm not sure what the 'All Customers' drop down is supposed to filter on as I've filled out all the customer/bill related fields when adding a new bill and it never populates. In general I don't see any place to look for clues as to what is failing on the page failures, as the apache error.log doesn't have anything and the observium.log file is only poller items. Can I enable more verbose logging into the observium.log file somehow? Thanks, Berant

Hey Adam, What OID is used to generate stat about non-unicast packet, does these below correct? 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.2 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.3 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.4 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.5 I'm trying catch some error in stat which cause to show as 500M non-unicast packets, which is damn huge.

I see this reasonably often on cheaper kit. Lots of dell switches do it too. You can disable poller/discovery modules with hyte web interface. New user introduction - Scaling questions

Hello everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself to the list and complement the authors on a fantastic tool! As a little background on our deployment, I work for a Midwestern US ISP/NSP and I found Observium by looking for a replacement solution for our severely aging 95th percentile burstable billing system. However I was blown away by Observium once I got it running. We're now looking at replacing several systems with it focusing on interface/data polling, we have a separate system that we will continue maintain to do SNMP trap handling. Right now we have just shy of 16k interfaces across 30 nodes, with another dozen or two to add to complete our cisco L3/L2 devices. I'm interested in adding new device types for our Cisco 15454 SONET and MSTP systems (and have read the Developing/NewOS document), however if these devices were to be added it would take our device count up north of 600, with a massive increase in interfaces. So I want to make sure I've got things setup well before going down that road. While performance is doing great thus far I'm concerned about things I can do to scale the system. Currently the system is a Xen VM with 4 cores and 4GB of ram, and the load average is staying right around 4 with 40% average CPU usage. Since we're not interested in alerting for interface/node up/down with Observium I've configured each device to ignore and disable alerting. I've also took out the various menu items poller modules for things that we don't need as well. And I need to look into interface names that can be ignored etc as well. I've not yet tried rrdcached but I'd like to see what impact that has on existing load. Does anyone else have any recommendations or additional best practices? I have some thoughts ideas on potential features that could be useful for other ISP users as well, however I don't want to flood the list right off the bat with an even more rambling email. Observium is a great tool, and though I'm not a programmer I'd love to help out however I can. Thanks, Berant

Hey, Does anyone here monitor D-link switches via SNMP? We had small devices which is pooling just fine, with pretty limited support, but still ok. And now trying out DGS-3120-24TC and it seems dying under snmp load when you add it on observium. And by dying I mean it become bunch of useless metal until you reboot it. So I wonder maybe anyone know which OID cause such behavior.

Anyone using 95th Billing?

Hi Is anyone using 95th billing in observium? I've been having slowness issues with it, so I setup a new server, downloaded the latest version and cleared all the billing tables and let it start polling again. This was fine and the polling has been working. The page was loading in less than a second. As the days have gone on, the bills page has been getting slower and slower and now takes at least 20 seconds to load. I am just wondering if this is normal or if there is something wrong. Thanks. auto-refresh on individual port graph broken

It seems, autorefresh is broken when you select device go into ports and select specific graph to view it on full-screen. Actual refresh is working and you can force it by pressing F5 but graph doesn't update until you click again on one of time-window graph.

light blue peak on graph

So I got one device polled by cacti and observium. And see difference in peaks (outbound as example). What I see is light blue color peaks are bigger than show in cacti but regular blue outline in observium graph match cacti peak. Is light blue peak is interpolation of data, how its caclucated or where it comes from?

Is it possible to change HTML title to something more descriptive? Like when you open summary page of device you will have name of device in title instead current static "Observium :: Network Observation and Monitoring"? This helps when you navigate in observium and want to go back and all previous pages named same :). So you have to know how much level you want go back.

huge peaks on interfaces 10-100Gig

We seeing once in while really huge peaks on some devices. In past we seen such when installing new device or/and doing maintenance on it. So we just ignore them in past, because they only broke graphs once in time. Does anyone seeing this too? Basically this looks like huge peak (10-100G) for about 5-10 min(2 scans). I've seen this on different devices, but all of them are Cisco afaik.

netstat legend

Most of netstat graphs have 4 rows but legend says "current, averange,max). Only IP fragmetations have 3 rows/3 description. So what's up with 4 row in other graphs, probably should say current,min,avg,max?

Include Server Port Type?

The wiki[1] lists Server as a valid port type. The parser does all the work so that http://observium.ndcls.local/iftype/type=server/ works. All that is needed is a config option and a menu item. I have a patch that add these two things. However, codekiller brought up a valid point that all you'd have to do is search for server. http://observium.ndcls.local/ports/ifAlias=server/format=list_basic/ This works just as well, for me. Therefore I ask, do we want a menu link for the server port type? Some device traffic graphs are not working anymore

Code to Delete interfaces that match bad_if?

So I spent a lot of time digging through the code to figure out how bad_if works. I wanted to remove the stacking "ports" there were showing up. Added this code to my config: $config['bad_if'][] = "stack"; However the ports weren't getting removed. Upon further investigation I found that the current code only prevents the addition of a match. However, if the port is already in the database nothing is done. Is this the desired behaviour or should ports that match be removed from the database? ~pyther

CDP Neighbours

Hi, I have just noticed that the Neighbours option has disappeared under the Ports Tab for some of the devices we monitor via Observium; this looks to have happened after upgrading to version 0.11.10.2654. Is it something to do with my upgrade or is there something broken. The issue is that some do display the Neighbours Option on the same version so I am at odds about what is wrong. Dell OMSA

I am curious what attributes of Dell's OMSA snmpd integration are polled by Observium? Pre OMSA install the host was identified as Generic, post OMSA install/SNMP SMUX integration it polls the model correctly but nothing else. Hardware is a PowerEdge 1950 III. Some quick googling suggests that the OIDs for PE 1950, 2650, 2950, etc are not the same - although temp, voltage, fan, etc should be available, and is via the OMSA interface. Thought I would reach out to any fellow Dell + Observium users. Thanks, John

95th Billing is inaccurate

Hi We are having some more trouble with 95th billing. It seems that even on clients who are using very little (or nothing at all as they aren't using the ports yet) are showing an over usage on their 95th. Is there an easy way to correct this? Cisco ASA Overview graph not working

However when I hover the mouse over the graph area I can see the correct graphs in the pop-up window. Traffic graph error

Folks, Observium newbie here. I have it set up and running and thus far all is well other than port traffic graphs. When one tries to view these the following error is produced: XML Parsing Error: XML or text declaration not at start of entity Location: http://observium.foo.bar/graph-realtime.php?type=bits&id=3&interval=2 Line Number 2, Column 1:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?> Observium revision is 2547 (current as of this writing). Hi Adam, We have a need for the capability to monitor and graph the vty sessions on our Cisco gear since we have services that rely on the vty lines availability in order to work. I have digged and searched the Cisco website; link below; for info and it looks to be possible to do something like this using the OLD-CISCO-TS-MIB. I would like to have this graphed under the device Netstat tab, probably under the current UDP Statistics graph. I am specifically wanting to monitor the a number of active virtual-terminal at any one time. I am willing to program it into Observium if I can be shown how. VRF page broken

Hi, I just upgraded to version 0.11.9.2499 and noticed that when you click on the VRF icon under a Routing Tab; an empty overview screen is displayed, see below. In fact it seems to be the case that when you click on amythin under the Routing Tab, you get taken to the screen below. Is anyone else having this problem? Memory,CPU and Device Traffic broken

Hi, Clicking the Memory, CPU and Device Traffic graphs under the device overview page takes one to the Recent Eventlog Entries. Adam I also have an issue now with the Cisco 7606 router that we monitor using the version 0.11.9.2499. The memory pools display 0% even though I get the correct values upon clicking the sub-items monitored. Widescreen feature broken

routing-cef tab broken?

Hi Adam, Looks like routing-cef is broken http://demo.observium.org/routing/cef/. Just head up if you don't know, because it broken long time ;). It just fine showing up if you select specific device cef.

Port Stack not working on newer versions

Hi, I running two versions of Observium; older one being 0.11.7.2395 and the latest being 0.11.9.2453. On the latest version under device ports I cannot see the ports that the device I am viewing connects to, like I did in the older version, see below. I suspect it has something to do with port stack feature that's gone missing. New version; Old version; The port stack module is enabled on both versions. SVN down?

netstat doesn't detected on some devices

Hi, I've just noticed some device doesn't have subcategory netstat, while these devices clearly do support TCP,UDP,ICMP,SNMP mibs to gather that information. I've tried to snmpwalk them and it return values correctly.

Traffic bills page taking over a minute to display

Hi We've been adding customers to the billing section and after a strange occurrence a few weeks ago (which we attributed to time changes between the VM and the ESX host), the billing page has been very slow to generate. Please could you let me know if there is anything I can do to check/fix the problem? Below is how long the most recent page display took: MySQL: Cell 63/0s Row 404/38.23s Rows 8/0.65s Column 189/56.87s Generated in 95.36 seconds. This is happening in the latest dev release of Google Chrome, Opera 11.50 and IE9 (I haven't tested firefox). I have already rebooted the server. Below is the system information. Graphs showing no data and NaN

I recently installed Observium to monitor some voip switches. Previously I have had a different installation monitoring a ton of network gear, so I'm not unfamiliar with the intall process. This new installation appears to be gathering data, but all my graphs are just axis and legends and all the number are "NaN". Ubuntu 8.04 32 bit php5 5.2.4 myslq 5.0 rrdtool 1.4.3 snmp 5.4.1 Which is all the same as other the working system. Debugging : poller.php appears to be running fine and collecting data : Polled in 5.111 seconds UPDATED! MySQL: Cell[0/0s] Row[114/0.01s] Rows[17/0s] Column[0/0s] Update[116/0.57s] Insert[1/0s] Delete[0/0s] And the /device/#/ports/details/ page for my switch shows bandwidth numbers for each port, but completely blank mini graphs, and when I mouseover the mini-graph, it show graphs without any data, just axis, legend, and "NaN" for each value. Apache error logs don't show anything failing. Adding "&debug=1" to any of the graph.php pages, generates the same graphs without any data. I've checked file/path permissions, and they appear identical between boxes. Assuming user error, I've dropped the database and recreated it, along with a complete fresh install. Neither helped. I'm rather stumped, anyone have any ideas of what to look at next? Jeff

replacing device filling eventlog

When observium monitor device like router and you replace it with different model (leaving IP address same) it keep re-detecting interfaces with every poll. BTW, thanks for this great app. Its better than most of the commercial options i have even found. 1) How do I disable ipv6 reporting? Its not being used at all within my infrastructure. There is actually probably a lot of stuff that could be disabled, such as cisco and wireless, etc. I dont have either of those. Are filters used for this? 2) I see the config options for syslog, but then it says its not being used. So right now nothing is done with syslog at all? Im assuming there are plans for observium to become a syslog server then? Well, at least parse logs from one. 3) I do have multiple xen servers, what exactly does enabling the Virtualization options do and where would that data be available? 4) Since i have xen nodes, any recommendations for getting resource information to actual show for the entire xen host instead of just the dom0? 5) Service monitoring at this point is imply just up/down. Right? Is there that much on how quickly alerts are sent out? Can it wait to see it it fails for a second check before reported, etc? Wanting to reduce false positives. Note, i havent really done anything with alerts with observium, just reading over the docs. BTW, im using Observium 0.11.6.2390. Thanks for your time! - Mark
