discovery.php repeatedly trying to upgrade database

I did an svn up recently, and am now at r2879. I ran discovery.php to update the database afterwards, and it went fine; however, now my discovery.php processes hang trying to install old database updates: $ ./discovery.php -h new Observium v0.12.2.2879 Discovery -- Updating database schema 000 -> 001 ... done (0 errors). 001 -> 002 ... The result is the discovery.php processes stack up and eventually exceed the database connection limit. Traffic

Hi, I'm testing the observium and already added a couple of devices, (several switch one router and some linux boxes) All this devices have at least 1Gb network cards or ports in the case of switchs, some have 10Gb ports. But in my graphs I have at most 100/120 Mb peaks, but I'm sure that I have more traffic in some ports, because I have other monitoring system (cacti) showing that. I remember that in cacti I had to configure the counters to be 64-bits and convert bytes in bits. Limit Views and devices groups

Hi!, how do you guys scale in heterogeneous administrative environments?. For example: - Within an administrative domain would be nice to group the devices involved in a particular high level service. - Currently I have a mix of devices and would like to see them all, but some administrator for example would like to see only their hardware. Would it be possible to limit access to a set of devices?. >From what I know, the only way right now would be to have many observium instances for different people, but that would be an issue if some people would like to see all the hardware.... LDAP authentication with AD

Does anyone know the correct parameters for binding with Active Directory for Observium? Is there a way to make it use SSL? I've used the configuration below but get a blank page after attempting to login. widescreen ports graphs

Hey Adam, Just quick note, that widescreen mode on ports graph doesn't working property. These 4 graphs should fill all available width, but instead using proportion from normal mode. And I wonder if there way we could able to select multiply different port types, like transit+peering. I mean come up with different control where you could select not only one state?

Hi Guys, For some (unknown) reason all of our catalyst chassis (650x-E) have recently stopped recording data for their Crossbar usage on all their cards. Data is visible up to a couple of weeks ago, but then stops and nothing more has been recorded since. The permission on the rrd are fine, and the file itself hasn't been modified since the day the data stopped being recorded. Interestingly, the usage 'bar' next to the (blank) graph shows usage on it correctly. So, as a test, I moved the rrd files for one chassis out of its folder then did a full redetect of the one host in question. Feature Request/Suggestion: Trending

Hi, it would be really helpful for Capacity Planning to include Trending support, as far as I know, RRDTool already has support for it. Maybe adding trending on all graphs is not the best option, because for one graph there are many data sources, and while one can choose what one thinks would be the most obvious candidate another user might need to do the trending using other datasource... Maybe adding a separate TAB where one can choose what to graph with trending would be the most "universal" solution, or maybe a mix of both, graph the obvious by default and enable and "advanced" tab for trending on demand... Load Graph, 'm'illions?

Sorry if this has been asked before, couldn't find the answer in a quick search. Graphing Linux load average on a busy machine I see integer numbers, which is expected "20" for example, but graphing an almost idle machine (load 0.22), it's graphed as 220 m. Hi, I managed to install Observium rev2831 on SLES11SP1, and it's working great!! Trying to add hosts by CLI I was getting the "cannot ping" message, fixed it adding "$config['fping'] = "/usr/sbin/fping";" to config.php. Now, I keep getting the same trying to use the Web UI to add a hosts, apparently it's not using the config['fping'] variable. Is that possible? VLAN Tabs missing?

Hi, I just upgraded to the latest version and I noticed that the VLAN Tab is now gone. Although I can still see what VLAN; VLAN number to be precise; an interface belongs to under the device Ports tab, I cannot see any VLAN name like I used to before. Patch to monitor by-outlet APC MasterSwitch bars

Hi, We have recently installed some APC power bars that can be monitored by outlet (AP8653). I have written a patch for Observium (attached) that creates sensor for each of the ports on a AP8653. The patch also includes getting the input voltage for the newer "rPDU2" type power bars. I found the snmp queries to be slow against these new apcs when returning the current information, hence the increased timeout. Any suggestions/improvements are more than welcome! Regards Jordan

No authorisation to app apache

Hi My "normal users" can access the page App >> Apache (they are granted access to the device) but the graphs is not displaying. Only the text "No authorization" and a pink graph showing no values. Is this a bugg or do I have to grant access other than to the device for the users ? The Administrator classed users have no problem. poller doesn’t kick the apache-stats.py script

”Observium 0.11.10.2693” I have set up Observium as instructed to monitor an apache server. Everything seems work fine except that there is no data in the graphs . Doing a manual snmp poll from Observium server returns data and the /tmp/apache-snmp file is creataed on the remote server so I know that the script has been executed. sorting type on ports tab changed?

Hi, Does sorting order recently changed on ports tab? When I sort by name of port right now it sort like this GigabitEthernet0/1 GigabitEthernet0/10 GigabitEthernet0/11 etc but before it was 0/1, 0/2, 0/3, etc.

Abnormal spike in billing graphs - r2719

Hello, I've just recently setup Observium and noticed a strange spike in reported usage for one billing item, that wasn't reported in the actual interfaces stats. I've attached three screen shots, one of the accurate billing page for the billing entry in question, the 2nd for the interface page under the device, and the 3rd for the same interface as seen from a cricket install. As you can see the physical interface graphs in Observium or cricket don't show this extended period of ~ 8Gb/s that show up in the mysql based graphs. Looking at bill_data for the bill_id in question there were 45 entries where in_delta was exactly 309525032051591 while out_delta continues to change. Here is an example row: 31, 2011-11-10 17:35:06, 299, 309525032052787, 309525032051591, 1196 This has only manifested in this one billing. Billing question

I have a quick question to confirm what data is used to determine an overage... I believe I'm understanding the code/database correctly in that it calculates the 95th percentile for both in and out (rate_95th_in/rate_95th_out) and then whichever one is larger is stored as rate_95th and that is what is used for the value that the overage is based on. I just ask because we see ~4-5 times more entries that are over their limit with Observium than with our previous system (which granted was horribly cobbled together, and last maintained in the early 00's), and I just wanted to make sure it wasn't taking the sum of in and out for the calculation. Cisco ASA Remote Access Sessions getting Error Drawing Graph

Using Observium to monitor several pairs of Cisco ASA 5520 firewalls. On the graphs/firewall page /observium/device/device=27/tab=graphs/group=firewall/ the very last graph is labeled Remote Access Sessions. I'm getting the ubiquitous "Error Drawing Graph" on that row of graphs. whats my next debugging step? The apache logs don't show any errors, so I'm guessing its somewhere in the Observium or RRDtool layers. Observium 0.11.11.2726 Apache 2.2.14 (Ubuntu) PHP 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.10 MySQL 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.10 Thanks ---- Jeff

Potential bugs - r2726

Some of these could be known issues but I didn't see anything in the bugtracker and wanted to see if they were somehow unique to my installation. There are a couple pages that completely error out, the browser get's a failure trying to load. For me that is the main Inventory page under the overview tab, and the all ports page. I have currently 30 devices with ~16k ports in my system. For a page like the all ports page I would expect that to take some time to render as it's pulling together a lot of info for 16k interfaces, however after maybe 1-2 seconds it fails. Filtering under the traffic bills page doesn't seem to work, when I first started entering Bills I know I was able to filter by over/under quota, however now that I have 67 in it doesn't seem to work. Also I'm not sure what the 'All Customers' drop down is supposed to filter on as I've filled out all the customer/bill related fields when adding a new bill and it never populates. In general I don't see any place to look for clues as to what is failing on the page failures, as the apache error.log doesn't have anything and the observium.log file is only poller items. Can I enable more verbose logging into the observium.log file somehow? Thanks, Berant

Hey Adam, What OID is used to generate stat about non-unicast packet, does these below correct? 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.2 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.3 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.4 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.5 I'm trying catch some error in stat which cause to show as 500M non-unicast packets, which is damn huge.

I see this reasonably often on cheaper kit. Lots of dell switches do it too. You can disable poller/discovery modules with hyte web interface. New user introduction - Scaling questions

Hello everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself to the list and complement the authors on a fantastic tool! As a little background on our deployment, I work for a Midwestern US ISP/NSP and I found Observium by looking for a replacement solution for our severely aging 95th percentile burstable billing system. However I was blown away by Observium once I got it running. We're now looking at replacing several systems with it focusing on interface/data polling, we have a separate system that we will continue maintain to do SNMP trap handling. Right now we have just shy of 16k interfaces across 30 nodes, with another dozen or two to add to complete our cisco L3/L2 devices. I'm interested in adding new device types for our Cisco 15454 SONET and MSTP systems (and have read the Developing/NewOS document), however if these devices were to be added it would take our device count up north of 600, with a massive increase in interfaces. So I want to make sure I've got things setup well before going down that road. While performance is doing great thus far I'm concerned about things I can do to scale the system. Currently the system is a Xen VM with 4 cores and 4GB of ram, and the load average is staying right around 4 with 40% average CPU usage. Since we're not interested in alerting for interface/node up/down with Observium I've configured each device to ignore and disable alerting. I've also took out the various menu items poller modules for things that we don't need as well. And I need to look into interface names that can be ignored etc as well. I've not yet tried rrdcached but I'd like to see what impact that has on existing load. Does anyone else have any recommendations or additional best practices? I have some thoughts ideas on potential features that could be useful for other ISP users as well, however I don't want to flood the list right off the bat with an even more rambling email. Observium is a great tool, and though I'm not a programmer I'd love to help out however I can. Thanks, Berant

Hey, Does anyone here monitor D-link switches via SNMP? We had small devices which is pooling just fine, with pretty limited support, but still ok. And now trying out DGS-3120-24TC and it seems dying under snmp load when you add it on observium. And by dying I mean it become bunch of useless metal until you reboot it. So I wonder maybe anyone know which OID cause such behavior.

Hi Is anyone using 95th billing in observium? I've been having slowness issues with it, so I setup a new server, downloaded the latest version and cleared all the billing tables and let it start polling again. This was fine and the polling has been working. The page was loading in less than a second. As the days have gone on, the bills page has been getting slower and slower and now takes at least 20 seconds to load. I am just wondering if this is normal or if there is something wrong. Thanks.
