artificially high (100%) CPU usage reported from routing engine on Juniper MX-104 w/ 550 interfaces & solution

Observium has been recording artificially high CPU for RE0 on my MX-104, and I finally spent the time to understand what was going on and look for a solution. Here’s what I found in case it helps someone else. I say artificially because monitoring the system from the CLI reported 30-40% CPU usage with significant spikes during SNMP polling, but Observium constantly recorded 100% CPU usage. First up, I got the juniper to stop reporting on it’s internal interfaces and a bunch of others that show up by default. This removed a bunch of interfaces that existed but never had data and observing was polling. This cut the poll time down a fair bit, so I mention it if you haven’t used it on a juniper before. If you want this, it’s: snmp { filter-interfaces { all-internal-interfaces; interfaces { <other interface you don’t want stats for here>; } } } I also went through and turned off all the modules it wasn’t using or weren’t producing any data in polling or discovery. Helped a little more, but exposed something odd. When I would run polling on just the processors module, it would report CPU usage that matched what I saw in the CLI. When it ran as part of the whole host polling, it reported 100%. Figured out it was polling the processors after it had polled sensors and the 550 interfaces on this router, and that has run up the CPU utilization while it was polling, so the RE was reporting that instant CPU usage while it was still high. Not sure it was the best way, but moved the processor module to the head of the polling queue, and now I’m getting a CPU status that is more representative of the general load on the RE, and not the 100% usage the SNMP polling was causing. This router has always had this many interfaces, so as far as I can tell, a change in polling order caused this behavior and not a growth in interfaces. migrating observium to a new server

Observium-OpsGenie integration

Hello, My name is Celal Emre ÇİÇEK and I'm an integration engineer at OpsGenie. I'd like to know if there are any changes in the latest updates of Observium that could affect Observium - OpsGenie integration. Today, one of our customers came up with a problem. He says Observium alerts aren't being forwarded to OpsGenie. He also says that he didn't change any configuration in Observium and in OpsGenie. We've confirmed that he didn't change any configuration in our side. We also asked him to check his Observium configuration and compare it with our docs. He's checked and nothing is wrong. So, we wonder if there are any changes that affect OpsGenie integration in Observium in the latest updates, maybe some changes in the backend. Could you please check and return to us? [observium] facing problem in email alerting.

Hello Guys, I am facing a problem regarding Observium Alerting. Few days ego I have enabled alerts and configured to send to couple of specific email ids. Configured those email Ids in .php file as well as in GUI. Due to some reason I have removed those email Ids to stop sending alerts. Now Observium starts collecting email ids from ‘snmp contact’ configuration of device and sending alerts to this email id. Please let me know what to configure so that Observium would not be able to send emails to the email id which is configured in snmp contact of network device ? Update to Cisco memory usage details.

So, I installed the CE edition on an Ubuntu vm (rather than use the Turnkey appliance), and I now see Cisco memory usage, but all of my graphs, for all devices, show no values. Every graph just shows -nan Not sure what is going on there. Thanks

Frequency bug

Unable to parse header `DSName' rrdtool

I have a few different rrdtool graphs that are outputting "RRDTool Output: ERROR: rrdc_fetch: Unable to parse header `DSName'" So far I've only noticed it on specific Citrix Netscaler graphs, the Netscaler SSL ones nsSslHandshakes, nsSslSessions, etc and TCP Connections and TCP Packets for the netscalers are all in the same state with Unable to parse header `DSName'. [cid:image001.png@01D29412.6D368F20] Sadly I didn't notice when, I did recently upgrade to revision 8417, however these aren't graphs I frequently look at. Anybody else with netscalers in their environment at the same revision? Migration CentOS 6 to 7 - Graphs Failing

Our Observium professional server file system was recently damaged beyond recovery. Fortunately the database and the Observium directory had been backed up the night before. The older server OS was CentOS 6 and the new OS is CentOS 7 (both 64 bit). The Observium directory was restored and the database imported; now the Observium web page is working well, with visibility of all devices, historic stats/states/graphs etc. The cron jobs are running and polling etc. - the state of devices updates dynamically via the map too. However, there are no updates to the any of the graphs. I'm not sure if there is a database problem, RRD problem or file permissions problem. Placing /debug after various pages does not reveal any problems. Can anyone recommend other places to look for debug/logging information? Thanks in advance Darren

Traffic Accounting

I plan to renew my subscription with you, but before doing it, I wanted to make sure, if now we can select "which stream" can be accounted, being : rx, tx or rx+tx, I'm asking this, because we have different ways of billing customer ports and this is a must for us. Sorry, but I don't see any attached graphs. I do believe that Cisco memory graphs are working for other people, just not for me. When I go to graphs, system, all I see is processors and device uptime. Not sure where to start troubleshooting and/or correcting this. I should also note that I am using the Turnkey Linux appliance. Should I be seeing memory usage graphs on Cisco devices?

I have various Cisco devices ( catalyst switches, ios routers, ios-xe, etc), but none of them are showing any memory usage details in observium. I was surprised by this as observium did a remarkable job of recognizing and displaying information for things that most snmp tools do not, Qnap for example. It does recognize my Cisco devices and reports back on just about everything, but memory. Other tools I tried, such as Manageengine, PRTG, etc reported the memory with no issue. So, I'm skeptical that there is anything wrong with my snmp setup. I would really love to get memory usage for my Cisco devices. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. Thanks

Syslog parsing for NXOS

Hi list, Sorry if this had been asked before, but I'm unable to browse the mailing list archives. I have set up syslog parsing with Rsyslogd, like documented [1]. The syslog.php script does receive the logs and saves them in the database. Parsing logs from both Cisco Catalyst (IOS) and Cisco Nexus switches, I discovered that the NXOS logs are parsed incorrectly (see screenshot [2]). Search in device Description feature request

Observium weathermap issue

Hi All, I think weathermap is not part of Observium, but if anyone has the same issue with me please share Since I tried to created a few maps via web using weathermap editor like example1.conf, example2.conf, example3.conf and point it to like /maps/example1.html, /maps/example2.html, /maps/example3.html Then I tried to open each map, but all maps will link to the same content instead (like in the same example3). This is so strange if anyone used to have this issue like me, please share how you can fix it Thanks a lot

Hello, sorry for a maybe stupid question but I searched the Observium docs and FAQs and tried to search the mailing lists archive but latest was not available because the link to 'observium Archivs' on mailman's web interface leads to a 404. Is there an API to Observium and if is there a doc anywhere? Maybe I'm blind but I cannot find any related information if I inserted 'API' in the search field of the Obeservium docs. Google finds some pages that talk of " $config['api']['enabled'] = 1;" and/or query strings for an api.php - I do not even have an api.php in my observium installation. Some Observium values should be made available through a CRM and an API might be a smooth solution. Any tipps appreciated! Thanks, Uwe

Aggregate graph show not accurate total max of traffic

Hi All, I have one question related to aggregate maximum of graph I have sum up two ports together but it is actually not accurate Eg: one port: 10.54 Gb and another port: 10.95 Gb So total of max should be 10.54+10.95 = 21.49 but the real on graph is showing 21.34 instead Can anyone help to explain me about this? No graph policy description on Cisco CBQoS graph

Dear All, I wonder why Cisco CBQoS graph on Observium Pro have no graph description(policy name) show up? Since I observe there is policy description name showing up on Observium Community Edition. It should display something like: CUST-Name / class-default (input) CUST-Name / class-default (output) Can you guide if we can enable it on the script somewhere? Thanks so much.

Disable IF-MIB cisco nexus

Hi there! Due to a bug I want to disable the IF-MIB, on my nexus devices, is that possible? There is no specific IF-mib in the Device-MIB, is it included in some of the other MIBs? Graph direct link changes when group membership changes

Hi! I'm using the direct link to graphs for a dashboard. Not sure this was the intended usage, but I found an issue that I think could be avoided related to this. It looks like graphs in this view are getting encoded IDs that somehow relate to the devices in the group, so the URL looks like this below. The issue is that when having lots of devices in a view, the id field gets really long and eventually will cause the graph creation to fail....however another and bigger issue is that it seems the id actually change when new devices are added (which happens during auto-discovery). Can't write new info to Observium

Hello all, never happened to me before, but Obsevium acts strangely lately for me. When trying to add a new device via web, it sucessfully adds it, but it's page appears to be missing. It says something like 'You entered a device which does not exist' or something similar. What is more, when I want to manually change device's description on the web, it says 'Device record updated'. But the info that I've written has not appeared. What could have caused this? I don't remember doing any changes to my Observium server, except doing an update. Version 17.2.8364 (stable) Everything else works as it should. Thank you

ASR9k RAM Changes

Hi, Have there just been some changes to the ASR9k RAM detection? Suddenly after the overnight svn up we are seeing this for all 9k chassis: [cid:image001.png@01D28C23.56E5F220] These 3 new items are in alarm. The “reserved” and “image” are filtered from all other devices by existing config.php – but obviously no brackets on these ones. $config['ignore_mempool_string'][] = '(reserved)'; $config['ignore_mempool_string'][] = '(image)'; However, the ‘processor’ one is actually wrong as it seems to be using the CPU0 usage but a strange maximum of 3.81GB instead of 7.81GB. I can’t filter this out because it will drop all ‘processor’ types. I remember something historic relating to this where the maximums were showing as around 4GB even though there is 8GB installed and someone (Adam?) found and sorted it. Alert regeneration via cli?

Is there a way to regenerate the alerts from the cli? We have some checks that alert based on port state, dependent on conditions within a port description. But that matching is only performed during the alert regeneration, not during polling. So if the port description gets updated, the alert still triggers based on the old condition match... I'm thinking of running a regen via cron on a regular basis to try and minimise the false positives. Unless somebody has a better way to achieve a similar outcome? Thanks, Michael

Poller wrapper history graphs not updating

Hi! I have moved an instance from a physical server to a VM by moving over the database & RRD files + Observium $HOME. All works except one minor thing : The poller wrapper history (/pollerlog/ page) graphs do not update anymore. Also the RRD files do not update their timestamp since I moved the files to the new VM. The poller discovery/timing part of the same page does work properly, so it's only the top two graphs missing (or rather the graphs are there, but no new data is being added). Any idea why ? /Jesper

Memory graph missing

Hi All, I’ve got up this morning to find our nightly SVN UP has messed up the memory graphs for all our switches/servers/etc…? What appears to be be happening is its looking for the file 'mempool-HOST-RESOURCES-MIB-65536.rrd' which doesn’t exist BUT 'mempool-host-resources-mib-65536.rrd’ does exist Case-senstive I believe Anybody else had this issue? Specify snmp timeout for single device.

Hey, I would like to ask if it is possible to specify snmp timeout for a single device in Observium? I tried to do that in Device > Properties > SNMP > Timeout, but each time I try to change this empty field to 100 or 200… I get info: “Device SNMP configuration update is not required” Regards, Gabriel

using hardware sensors

Dear Observium community, is there any description of using hardware sensors? I've following issue. I'm operating a HP server with an Ilom under Ubuntu Linux. I configured in the device properties for ipmi: IPMI Hostname (IP address of the Ilom), IPMI Username (as configured at Ilom) IPMI Password, IPMI Userlevel (User) IPMI Interface (IPMI v2.0 RMCP+LAN Interface). Observium rekognized the sensors for temperature und fan speed. I did the same at an other HP server (same type) which is running ESXi 6.5 (HP customized Image). The Sensors are shown in the vSphre-Client and ESXi empeded host client UI. But for this host, Observium does not rekognize the sensors. How can this be explained ? Thanks. Lg. TF

Group with 500+ devices

Hi, I have a problem with device classification to specific groups. We currently have 750 devices added in our network. Some users can only have access to specific devices, which led us to creating a group associated with them. The problem is, that more than 500 devices belong to the group, and when we attach this group to a user, it lags like hell. The main window of Observium loads slowly, and the search works very slow. I dont think that the server is incapable of proccesing this quickly It's a server with 80gb of ram, 24core cpu. By the way, admin accounts work perfectly . Is this a bug? Or something needs to be done in order? Let me know, thank you.

Ruckus Virtual SmartZone (vSZ) controller

It seems that either the Ruckus MIB changed, or my expectation of function is different than reality. We run the Ruckus Virtual SmartZone (vSZ) to control our AP's. At the moment, Observium provides just the local attributes (CPU, NIC, RAM, Disk) of the virtual machine, but it was my impression that I was supposed to get a much larger subset of data regarding AP's, configured WLANS, clients and traffic, etc. It appears in the MIB properties that the data should be available, but perhaps there's been a change of MIB from the Ruckus side (in which case I would also like to pay for getting that updated). Attached is a screenshot of the Device MIBs and SNMP errors as reported by Observium. If you require something else, please let me know. I am using the most recent software version for both vSZ and the APs (R600). Observium is updated from SVN daily(ish). If this requires more heavy lifting or outside of the scope, then please contact me offline for pricing and timeline, and I'll sponsor the additions. Philippe [image: Inline image 1]

Generate an BGP group with only like clue the interface description?

Hello, We would like create alert on BGP sessions only on private peering. The only clue for detected these BGP sessions is the description on interface. But Observium seems don't can link session<->network ports. I don't find easy solution to match these sessions. Anybody have an idea? Observium seems to be able link one IP to network port. Is it possible for you add functionality to link BGP sessions (with their IP) to network port too? We could do a really great monitoring and see BGP sessions linked to the network port (on new tab?) :-) Johann
