Custom alerts without using checkers

Hi, We have many custom scripts, and we would like those scripts to be able to send custom alerts into Observium. What is the best way to do this? We would not be able to use "Alert checks".. Wowza MIB

How does one go about requesting MIB support? Or alternatively, adding MIB support manually to one's own server? Wowza Streaming Engine just recently added SNMP and developed their own MIB. High CPU load on Cisco S500G Small business switches

Hi, We've noticed an issue with Cisco SG500 switches and Observium, where if you enable stacking mode (the default on the switch), regardless of if it is in a stack or not, the CPU reports a 50% average. Our investigations show it runs at 95% + for a couple of minutes whilst Observium is polling it, then drops back down to <10% when the query finishes. Turning stacking mode off drops the average CPU to <10% and CPU does not ramp up and down. We raised a case with Cisco TAC, who said this is "expected behaviour": >>> At every 5 min cycle, the CPU rises to 85- 95% temporarily and then drops down. The reason for this is, Observium is checking for interface status. When switch is in standalone mode the interface count database is the max switch capacity. Example 48 ports = 48 ports plus channel ports ~ 60 ports In stack mode the predefined port count in the data base is around 880 ports. While the switch is responding to SNMP get , it is using up resources and that is why the CPU utilization will be high. While I was testing it, I did not see or encountered any network outage or Web access issues. We have already made an enhancement request for this behaviour, to limit the port count to any stack configuration. >>> Has anyone else encountered anything similar? Adam - I realise that Observium is only polling what the switch is reporting, but if Observium can ascertain how many switches are in the stack, would it be possible to limit polling to only query active/connected stack members? Using Obserivum on server with multiple interfaces/vlan?

Hello, Simple question : We need upgrade our Observium deployment with multiple networks (public & private). Does Observium have any issue accessing nodes via more than one server interface? Whether two different physical ports or two different vlans on the same port? Some proprietary vendor NMS solutions are somehow locked to one interface only and cause great trouble. :o) Thanks, Johann

Bandwidth Reporting Off

I’ve been using Observium for a while and there seems to be some discrepancies between my graphs and the upstream (my data center provides me Ethernet GigE bandwidth). For example, from around 8am to 12pm today it showed overall utilization pretty consistent well above 400Mbps. These switches are actually trunked (2 x 3650 L3 switches). In the graph, it shows the uplink to switch #2 connectivity calculated with the total utilization (VLAN2155). This is definitely not accurate as it shouldn’t do that as far I’m concerned. Total utilization should simply be Drops #1 & #2, which covers all VLANs on both switches. Example: Drop #1 = 40Mbps Drop #2 = 200Mbps Uplink to Switch #2 = 130Mbps Now as a result VLAN2155 (total utilization) is calculating not only #1 and #2 drops from the upstream, but even the trunk port labeled “Uplink to Switch #2”. I disabled polling on that uplink port and the total utilization (VLAN2155) is still far higher than what the output is for the past 24 hours from the upstream provider. They show 187Mbps past 24 hours (95th), 219M In / 202 Out. I show 266M In / 182M Out. Why is it so drastically different? Why is Observium calculating the “uplink” to the trunked 2nd switch in the total utilization graph? This is throwing off accuracy.

VRF/BGP/OSPF discovery in vrf-lite (nx-os)

Hi Does anyone know whether it is currently possible to discover bgp/ospf routing instances within a VRF on the NX-OS platform ? We migrated from IOS to NX-OS, IOS was passing them through snmp just fine. But NX-OS requires snmpv3 contexts for vrf resources. A full walk in the 'default-vrf' does not contain any metrics for the vrf's running on this VDC. Hi, Can a port group contain multiple entities checks? I'm trying to just group our carriers for each location into port group. For instance I have our isp/carriers listed in the following format for the port descriptions on our routers L3:CKTID:DEMARC COG:CKTID:DEMARC My entity matches on either of those but when I combine them like the following below, I don't see any devices being associated with it. ifAlias matches *COG:* ifAlias matches *L3:*

Can't Hide Search

Please review this Cisco document regarding interface persistence. This is likely the issue you are seeing, not a problem with Observium itself. http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ip/simple-network-management-prot… There is a command you can include in your configuration that will keep interface numbering persistent across reboots. I just don't recall it exactly off the top of my head, or I would include it here. ... Trunk Issues

I've been using Observium for a while and there seems to be some discrepancies between my graphs and the upstream (my data center provides me Ethernet GigE bandwidth). For example, from around 8am to 12pm today it showed overall utilization pretty consistent well above 400Mbps. I have two drops from them: primary and secondary (redundant). Plus, they both show active instead of active/passive. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. >From the tech: "95th percentile is calculated from both ingress and egress traffic. For example, if you used a constant 200Mbps up and down, then you would only be charged your commit of 200Mbps, not double. I do see what you mean that the two handoffs (layer 2) are equaling more than 300Mbps, but when you look at the Aggregate (layer 3) graph at the top, it does not go over 300Mbps. These packets can possibly be queued before going out so you don’t go over your commit. " So, what do you think might be causing this hiccup? I noticed this too: so these switches are actually trunked (2 x 3650 L3 switches). In the graph, it also shows the uplink connectivity calculated with the total utilization. This is definitely not accurate as it shouldn't do that. Can't Add Device

Trying to add my secondary trunked switch, but I get this error "Could not ping switch2.mydomain.com." I ran a DNS lookup on that hostname and it shows the records fine and the switch (#2) accurately. I tried adding the device using the same setup as the original switch that's already there: port 161, udp transport, v2c protocol version, snmp community same as primary. I can ping the hostname too, not sure why Observium cannot.

False positives on Device Alerts

We have an SE installation with about 260 devices being checked. We have alerting setup for various services or checks. Often we see false positives on the SNMP device down alert, for example devices will report SNMP down when they are not really down. After a second or even third SNMP check we see a recovery and the uptime shows no outage. I also verify this by doing and snmpwalk from observium while the “alert” is active. Is there anything we can check or begin to look to find the cause. The server is not overloaded, with either memory or processor. We are running 25 poller wrappers with a complete polling time of about 300 seconds. Thanks, Tim

No devices found

Hi, I am having an issue with latest Observium release 0.16.9.8086 (9th September 2016), after updating to latest revision the discovery/polling is still working fine according to logs, however the web interface shows 'No devices found' and can't access any data. Any hints on how to solve this issue or investigate further ? Resetting the search parameters doesn't help. Best regards, Alessandro

Disabled devices showing on front page

Port Alerts

Hi, I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question but I am interested in setting up alerts for key ports only. I have setup the example which shows Enabled ports which are currently down: Tests ifAdminStatus equals up ifOperStatus notequals up Entity Match ifType equals ethernetCsmacd However I cannot work out how to refine it further - such as trunk ports only or if the port description contains a string, such as "CORE". We would like to know when key ports go down only. I have tried adding: ifAlias equals *CORE* and similar configuration but I expect I have the syntax incorrect. The idea would be to alert on either ports containing a certain word in their description or on tagged/trunk ports. I also tried to find a location to search the old emails from this mailing list but have been unable to find it. Many thanks, Peter

Alert check for only one Nexus Fex modul

Hello I have a Nexus switch (hostname is sw01) with lot of FEX. I would like to check only one FEX (fex name is Fex-120) Die-1 temperature value. I go to Devices > Network and select „sw01” device, select Health > Temperature and there i see every FEX sensors. [cid:image001.png@01D214BB.99AFC980] So i would like to create a check for Fex-120 Die-1 if over 45C i would like to get an alert. I tried to create alert check but i am not able to set up correctly. This check get all of FEX temperatures: Device Match: hostname match sw01 Entity Match: sensor_class equals temperature Check Conditions: sensor_value greater 45 What i have to modofiy to get only the requested FEX’s Die-1 temperature? Alert ifInOctets_perc doesn't match port ifInOctets_perc?

Had a couple of utilisation alerts come through today reporting a 10Gig port as over 80% utilisation, when in reality it doesnt appear to be that busy?. The alert email shows this graph, showing over 100% utilisation and a solid 80+% most of the day: [image: Inline images 1] When you click through the embedded link to the 'real' graph in Observium itself, it reports the correct utilisation figures I would epxect to see based on the traffic graph: [image: Inline images 2] Traffic graph for the port: [image: Inline images 3] Are the alerts reading the information from a different rrd? Doesn't seem like it as the port would be alarming constantly based on the graph in the email as it shows over 80% for most of the day? Happy to accept that the port may have spiked to 8Gbps, but I would have thought this would have been reflected in the graphs somewhere but if anything traffic was tailing off? Is there possibly an issue with the alerting on ifInOctets_perc or do I need to be looking more closely at what the device is reporting, which on face value _seems_ OK looking at a debug of poller.php? There is probably a space in it somewhere, that the location system detects but clicking on the location shows all 15 devices. Hi all, we are using Observium as support tool and have some difficulties with search bar. If someone want to search a description like: Asia-mSwitchVRF_5 you have to fill all letters in one line, for example: mswitchvrf_5 , otherwise no result found. Event if you type "mswitch5" or "asia-mswitchvr5" nothing.. I think we are not alone with this problem here? processors no rrd graphs

Hi All having a strange issue for some reason when i originally added a server, it only found 4 processors, (the server actually had 2 x quad core xeons) i did an observium update recently and suddenly 8 processors now appear but the processors graph is just showing ERROR now ive been able to find the issue the 4 new processors arnt putting any data into the rrd files ? Hi all, When temporarily disabling email alerts we used to set: $config['email']['enable'] = FALSE; As per: http://www.observium.org/docs/config_options/#email-backend-settings <http://www.observium.org/docs/config_options/#email-backend-settings> However this is no longer working. Hi For the purposes of alerting, is availability a a metric that can be used, and if not is it possible to add somthing where we could create an alert i.e. Type device device_availabilty le 99.5% Device Match * Entity Match * Delay 1 The issue I see is that the duration or scope is a defining factor, i.e availability over X days or X months etc

I/O Latency Metric Alert?

Hi, Is there an attachment point for alerts to be triggered from the metric of I/O Latency? Reason for asking is that I could do with an alert checker which would have spotted this issue (the scale is in seconds!): It went unnoticed overnight until it crippled a virtual host when users started accessing VMs on it this morning. The underlying fault was a RAID card issue, but nothing else detected it and I've just found that Observium 'knew' about it, but we have not alerts which would have caught this. Any ideas? Cheers!
