Your thoughts for Big Company and Big ISPs are small. Nobody wants to add thirty thousand devices in a hostname list, or with an nonsense script. They will choose a system that will be allowed to add devices by a subnet or network. That it means IP Address. Not hostname. We are not talking about servers hostnames, that are static, and won't change, even if the room is burned and the building is down. We are not talking about a BGP Router, or a Main router, that are always and forever there, if possible. We are talking about thousand of devices that are changing, at least, once a day. Ron, An DNS fail, doesn't mean I have one DNS server. With all your expertise, you should see other possibilities, other scenarios. Come on. It simply doesn't make sense to have a system that allow you to add a Device by IP address when it wants and later, it's not possible anymore. But you can try tomorrow, because tomorrow the system will accept the IP address. This is a bug for me. Joseph, The system works with IP Address. Whats is the diference to have an option to add devices by IP Address? Not even an option, because it already works, but just sometimes, if you are lucky. Another point, Sure I can make a script, but we are not talking about an expert user to be using the system. Can't this scenario be thought? We have "normal" people operating the system too. How do you think they will reach the Knowledge for this? They not even have access to the system console. You are closing your mind to main possibilities. I am talking about adding 3000 devices in a system, where these devices, does not need a hostname, it simply needs an IP address for eventual access. Because if we have a hostname like juliocesar.company.com, tomorrow, this device will be deactivated and activated for another customer with another name but the same IP address, and it's an infinite routine, because customers are not eternal, and IP addresses are not infinite. Can you imagine an system where we need advanced user only to use? Do you think Microsoft and Apple would be where they are with a software where only advanced user are able to use? Adam, What is an important device to you? Do you think that a customer side device isn't important to be monitored? How many devices have you ever seen in a network? Have you worked in an ISP? Do you have an Idea of what is to manage device hostnames for, until now, 7 cities? VRF / Arista

Hi, we have two Arista 7150S-64 switches where we use several VRF's. I have enabled VRF in config.php but they are not showing up in the GUI? Any ideas? Have I forgotten to enable something? Regards -John

Observium: Full Page World Map

Observium team, I was playing around with this myself, but my understanding of PHP is quite limited. I hacked something together myself but it doesn't scale well. Would be possible to add a feature to view the Observium world map in full screen mode? I understand that one could easily argue how this feature wouldn't bring much benefit. They wouldn't be wrong. That said, it would still be a nice to have Observium hanging in the NOC on a TV with a full screen map. I think that's originally what you were going for by having a map on the main landing page. I'm just thinking one step further. Just a suggestion. (Please feel free to tell me if I'm just doing it wrong~) Thank you. Frontpage: Eventlog filter

Hi everyone, right now it is possible to filter syslog messages on the frontpage with a statement in config.php: $config['frontpage']['syslog']['priority'] = array('emerg','alert'); // for example I think it would be nice to have something similar for the eventlog. For example to filter interfaces going up/down and interface-throughput: $config['frontpage']['eventlog']['filter'] = array('ifSpeed','ifOperStatus'); Maybe this feature is already implemented and i am not able to find it?! Joseph, The customer premisses equipment (CPE) are managed and accessed internally for monitoring and maintenance of customer internet connection. Customers are not eternal. Can you imagine to a system administrator expends all the day adding hostnames in a DNS Server for at least 10 CPE per day that can be changed 2 days after or a weekend after? Or even adding hostnames in the /etc/hosts for five devices that will be removed after 6 hours? We have system that only needs a screw to be adjusted, and people with the screwdriver in the hand. Are you asking me to search for a screwdriver and reach the screw to be adjusted? All the service providers I know, does not control CPE units with hostnames. They use hostnames for servers, main routers, main switches, and other devices that are usually in the Data Center. Discard out error rate check

Hello, On the 7793 we try to create a check that alert if the interface discards TX errors on our Nexus switch more than 0 per sec. This error is real, we see it on Observium graphs (Device->Port->Error->Discards TX ) and on the switch’s CLI too. We created this check but looks like it doesn’t work: ifOutDiscards_rate notequals 0 We tried it with “gt 1” instead of "notequals 0” without result. :( In an another check the ”ifInErrors_rate” is working, but the ifOutDiscards_rate not. Cannot add Device by IP Address but can by hostname

Hi All, I have many devices in our network that do no have hostnames and nor do I want to maintain DNS records for devices that do as this will be a nightmare to managed. Is there a way I can simply add a whole subnet range to Observium without using hostname? Cheers, Ivan

We often serve temporary events arround, and we need to add this devices for monitoring in somewhere. Now imagine, every weekend, add to host files, IP address to temporary devices. Ok, use always the same IP. Right. In one event we use 5 devices, in another 8. And what if we have 2 or more events at the same time? What if my DNS server, that is a monitored server as well fails? All my monitoring will stop? IP address is faster and more reliable than Hostnames. I would like you to think about adding devices just by hostname. We have 3000 devices on the network that we would like to add. But none of them need registered hostname. For this we have SNMP. They are end devices. They need to be monitored to order history and reports, but do not need DNS Names. Important devices have the hostname on the DNS, but any monitoring services we used before, we added the devices by hostname. IP is faster. That's the problem. It's not once. It's not one time in life. It's not advanced users that only uses the system. Can you think on this scenario? Who uses the information, and who uses the system? Is it necessary to be an system administrator or a network Engineering to uses the system? Or my Help Desk team will be able to add an CPE for monitoring too? You are developing a system for big ISP and big companys, but thinking small. I don't think it's my personal option. It's a use case that many Service Providers as us, have. You have two Scenarios that are not that simple as it looks. We have important devices. Ok. We need host names, but and for temporary devices, as an CPE. Can you imagine the work you are giving to us? Or to any ISP that cares about the customer? It's impossible that only us, as ISP serve temporary events. Don't you think? In my opinion, and it's not hard to implement, you should think in this scenarios. It won't cost nothing to have both options, IP and Host name. Every monitoring system you search, won't have this limitation. Adam. It's not my problem. It's what you said. Dear readers, Using Observium quite some time now. And am wondering if the following is possible, I'm asking because after a couple of days of searching for it, I can't find it anywhere. What I would like to have or maybe to be able to execute on Observium is a way so I can view what the incoming and outgoing traffic is for an given month. I am able to view it (and even see the bill options) but not to export it or see the absolute values. (for example 13,33 Gb out 21,65 Gb in) Better Example. For customer X, I want to see what his traffic was for box x from April 1 to April 30. And off course this is with Incoming and outgoing values. If there is already a way to view this data in an easy way and I've missed it. Then sorry for this pointless mail. Regards, Danny op de Dijk

Cron Causing Kayako System Logout and Unable to run Observium Cron simultaneously

Hi All, I having a problem related to Cron Job where if I started my cron job,my kayako will logout me from the system and if I stop the cron job I unable to pulled data for Observium. I had followed Observium on how to set the cron for it to pulled the data as shown inside the Observium page but still the cron will impact Kayako.Every time I started the cron job it will clash as Kayako also running php as well. Actually, the hostname requirement actually finally "inspired" me to get my sh*t together and get a good DNS system running for internal devices, and now everyone else around the office is much happier, they're not having to dog around and do "manual" resolution by asking "what the heck is that IP address again?" To each their own, I guess. I'm glad it does have the hostname resolution requirement. It made me be a better network architect. You cannot add devices by IP address. You need to have working DNS resolution, or have host to IP mapping in your /etc/hosts file. Hi all, Been using Observium for a while and love it. We just added a couple of our ESXI 5.1 servers to Observium in the hopes of being able to monitor bandwidth usage on individual VM's and bill against it. It polled the physical NIC's but not the virtual ones. We do have multiple VLAN's too if this makes a difference. Any way to do this? Just complementing, I don't have those IP addresses on the /etc/hosts, not even in a DNS Server. I have added all, apparently by IP address. Hi All, Is there a way to share live/active charts for custom OID’s with Global Read Only view users ? I want my User Support team to be able to see a live chart of the Cisco Any connect users I’ve got a Custom OID for; it is a single chart covering all gateway devices specifically for SSL VPN/AnyConnect type connections, it lets us see the distribution of connections across gateways. Hello Everyone, I have been using Observium to monitor a variety of network devices and VMWare ESXi hosts. Observium is doing a great job in gathering all the data from these devices and it is really helpful. I am trying to setup some alerts for disk, cpu and network utilizations but not receiving any emails. Here are some more details.Version: Observium CE 0.16.1.7533 1) I have modified below lines with right email address.// set up alerts $config['alerts']['email']['default'] = "mail(a)example.com"; ## Default alert recipient$config['alerts']['email']['default_only'] = true; ## Only use default recipient$config['alerts']['email']['enable'] = true; ## Disable email alerts as we do not use observium for monitoring but only for metering$config['uptime_warning'] = "86400"; ## Time in seconds to display a "Device Rebooted" warning, defualts to 1 day. Set to 0 to disable warnings.$config['alerts']['port']['ifdown'] = false; ## Generate an alert for ports which enter the ifdown state. 2) Tried sending test mail using ./test_alert.php./test_alert.php -a "some text" 3) Logged in to Web UI, under global settings set all buttons to default under "Use DB" 4) Setup some tests and to trigger alerts and looks like it tried to send some alerts, seeing a time entry under Alerted column. 5) Checked observium log(logs/observium.log) and system logs to see if there were any attempts to send out an email. No entries were found. 6) Observium server is able to send out emails, i have tested it using mailx and sendmail commands, it uses postfix configuration. I am not able to find where the issue is. Security Issue with old script

Hi Guys, There's an authenticated remote execution issue with an old unused script, netcmd.php. You should either SVN up to have it automatically removed (we've not used it for a long time, but no one removed it!), or you can manually remove it if you're running CE. Thanks, adam. LDAP users permissions

Hi, Is there any plan to implement LDAP / Active Directory users permission for devices like local users? Currently I do not see any option how to assign for such user from AD just selected list of devices to see. We need to limit people to see just i.e. one divece, or group of devices. Thanks Tibor

Devices showing Down

I managed to get alerts working and its great. I did have a few questions though. Ideally, I'd like it if there were nothing in red on the dashboard (as if there are issues). [image: Inline image 1] Observium says I have a port down and 1 alert failed. However, all alerts are either OK or suppressed. Ports are either on and in use or disabled. There is nothing that shows in those lists. Any reason why it says that something is down? Your help is appreciated. Poller Overruns

Hi We are currently running OBSERVIUM Professional Ed with 31 Cisco 7600/3560/2960 polling around 5000+ ports. The Traffic graphs are showing gaps as the poller seems to be taking a lot of time. We have tried different values for the poller wrapper threads (16, 32, 48, 64) on a 16 core/64GB RAM machine but not seen any improvement. We have also tried different values for the 'ma-rep' field for snmp bulkwalk (5, 10 etc) - had seen improvement initially after enabling with 5, but the polling times seem to have increased automatically after some time. We are currently running with 64 Poller threads and max-rep 10. Pls suggest if we are missing something. A few screen-shots are attached. BGP modul question

Hello We use the PE 7703 version and we would like to use the BGP modul for our Cisco ASR 9001 router. On the Observium / Routing tab we see the OSPF connections but there is no BGP section. We hard-enabled the BGP in the config.php ($config['enable_bgp'] = 1;) but it doesn’t help. All of BGP related mysql tables are empty. What we did wrong? :) Thanks Laszlo

Hi All not sure if people have noticed but Lets Encrypt has become very popular at the moment as a very simple fast way of getting SSL https://letsencrypt.org/getting-started/ is was very simple and easy for myself as it just worked! clone the repo, let it install its requirements, and run ./letsencrypt-auto — apache and boom it was done :) would it be possible to add to to the install guide as Optional SSL step? Graph data failures

Frontpage showing 0 port total/up/down after upgrading to latest community edition

Hi all. After upgrading Observium to the latest CE, the frontpage show 0 ports Total/Up/Down: [image: Inline image 1] I have all ports set with polling = yes and alert = no. Any reason Total/Up/down is no longer showing anything else than 0? Any ideas on how to fix it? -- Gard -- No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
