nxos syslog

is the nexus' L3 in the global (default) vrf? if *not* then it won't (easily?) work until cisco fixes the (being kind here) "oddball way" that mib exposure happens on the nxos platform. a workaround could be to map out things with snmp contexts that tie in a string per vrf ... but imo that doesn't scale effectively. join the party: go beat up TAC and your sales rep. for how stupid their implementation -- of something pretty fundamental -- is. luck, R. NXOS vrfs == OID grief

it seems vrfs aren't discovered, since the OIDs are not found. this leads to all sorts of unhappiness, since with no ipaddr (mgmt vrf) winds up with no syslog, no routing, no nothing except L2 info. who can I send the walk to? Timeout: No Response from xxxx

Hi, I have latest observium installed and running on a Ubuntu 12.04.4 server and am trying to add another same Ubuntu server to the observium server. I've set up snmpd on the target host. When I run the snmpstatus command from the observium server I get a Timeour: No Response. I've installed the mibs and everything else according to the docs. I can see in the syslog of the target host that the observium server hits it. I can run successfully snmpstatus on the target host and query itself. I can run snmpstatus successfully from another CentOS server. It works from everywhere except the observium server. There are no firewalls involved. Am I doing anything wrong? What info can I send you to help me debug it. Please help Thanks

Hi, I'm trying to get syslog (using syslog-ng) from some NX-OS devices into Observium, but so far no luck. Hi all, I have a problem with the "Device Traffic"-Graph in Observium (r5581) since I inserted two modules 22Ports (J9536A) into the backplane of a HP 5406zl. It is not plotted anymore as you can see in the attached device-traffic.png. The Error-Message from RRDTool is: RRDTool Output: ERROR: mmaping file '/srv/observium/rrd/x-fra01.tfhbo.de/port-97.rrd': Invalid argument. The file port-97.rrd is empty, but observium added the Ports yesterday. Eventlog: 23-06-2014 18:37:13 Inventory Inventory added: class port, name Port F22, index 217 .... and so on. Maybe it is just a side-effect: All of the other new Ports, are not plotted, too. Any suggestions? What you can do to get the optical levels for 1G interfaces (or 10G interfaces on older FPCs in the M/T) is extend the Juniper MIB and run the commands in Junos using a script. I tried doing this some time ago, just never got it finished. Regards, Rutger

Disable Device Alerting

I have the new alerting in Observium setup for many events, including device down. However, over some of our wireless links I am getting false positives, so I turned up the ping retries to 3 times. Still happening, so I set the device down delay to 2. That has helped, however I am still getting the old school device alerting system emails. How can I disable those? I have port utilization disabled ($config['alerts']['port_util_alert']), etc. But I can't find anything in any docs or searches for disabling device down alerting in the old alerting system. LDAP authentication and user id mapping (user sees no devices)

Hello all, in the moment I try to switch from mysql to LDAP authentication (AD). The LDAP connection seems to work. I can logon to observium using my LDAP credentials. But the user mapping to permissions does not work. In observium the user sees no devices. The mapping is set as follows: $config['auth_ldap_groups']['Observium_Admin']['level'] = 10; $config['auth_ldap_groups']['Observium_User']['level'] = 1; In Wireshark I could see that the right group (Observium_Admin) was matched. Debug shows something like: SELECT * FROM `entity_permissions` WHERE `user_id` = '-1' SELECT `value` FROM `users_prefs` WHERE `user_id` = '-1' AND `pref` = 'atom_key' What to try next? SysobjectID for AIX

Hello, I compiled net-snmp for AIX on my two AIX 5.3 servers. Since doing so the sysobjectid now returns net-snmp.aix rather than one that designates for AIX. I can set the sysobjectid in the snmp.conf. I have been looking for what to set that to so observium knows that it is an AIX server rather than a generic server. Does anyone have the oid that reflects AIX for sysobjectid? Thanks, Mike

Hi All, is it possible to disable the showing of other sites within a port view? look at attachment to understand what i mean We use observium to monitor external ADSL lines and sadly these lines all have the same internal ip address and the observium is showing all the other sites on the same pan port Regards Simon

No VRFs being discovered on Cisco 3750 Stacks

Hi Guys, Recently I've started monitoring some of our edge routers using Observium and have found that VRFs don't appear to get found during discovery. I found an old post from last year where Adam advised that VRF tracking in Observium is currently considered "broken and unstable". (http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.network.observium.general/3159). Here is a snip from a discovery of one of our edge devices running a handful of VRFs: dot1d id ifIndex Port Name Priority State Cost 504 5003 Port-channel3 128 forwarding 3 Cisco Pseudowires : VRFs : SLAs : UCD Disk IO : Discovered in 6.686 seconds I'm guessing this may be a lower priority to devs at the moment but it is something we'd be requiring before we can fully move away from our other unnamed/expensive monitoring solution as we need to enable alerting for BGP instances bound to specific VRFs. If this is still an ongoing issue is this perhaps something we could offer the devs financial incentive in the form of donations to bump the priority a bit? Alternatively if this has since been patched am I doing something wrong? Aruba Instant AP -- No client or AP information

Group..... I've added an Aruba Instant AP 115 to Observium. It is graphing the traffic information properly, but the "Number of Clients" and "Number of APs" graphs are completely blank. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Traffic Accounting - Can't add new Ports (0.14.6.5571)

We can choose a device under "Add New Port" but the interface dropdown below won't populate at all - it will stay empty. We tested this on chrome and firefox and on various operating systems. Adding an application

Hi I’m almost done with my application plugin. The RRD’s are there and updating and I’m looking at html/pages/device/apps/app.inc.php and I’m having an issue. I have a dynamic number of graphs, with the same/similar sets of data. I need to call the same script repeatedly in html/includes/graphs/… but perhaps with parameters? Any help is appreciated. ppp0 and tun0 shown as down

Hi List, We currently monitor some dd-wrt devices. Observium is showing tun0 and ppp0 as down. I am guessing this is due to the interface speed set to 0. Is there a way to bypass this check ? It does look a bit weird to have a down interface with traffic on it. We are currently running the community ed. Changing to pro soon. Thanks, Pieter

Yeah, you are confused. Humidity is an example. Rather than alerts being created for 'sensors' they can now be created for 'temperature' or other sensor types directly. Also, humidity is important in a data centre environment, and is monitored by a lot of environmental monitoring systems along with temperature. Adam. apc power switch

Hi all, We currently use an old APC power switch to remotely switch servers on and off and the observium can detect its an APC :-) however i don’t get any graphs for it ? no power usage? no temperature ? nothing ? is the any form of graphs i could get outta it for use with the observium ? the web card is an old AP9606 and the unit is an AP9212 Regards Simon

DRBD with Unix Agent, doesn't show data on Graphics

Hello, I have implemented the DRBD with the Unix Agent on one of the nodes of our Storage Cluster but sadly I cannot see any Info on the Graphics in Observium. Agent is running ok on the Server. I've also manually run the drbd script on the Server, and I actually get some info. Is there anything that I'm missing to configure on the monitored node? Do I need any particular additional configuration? Smokeping, Rancid and Observium

Yeah you are hijacking a thread, but whatever. I'll change the subject line and start a new thread :) I have rancid and websvn running on the same box. That box is separate from observium. I did this because I wanted rancid to run on a vm. Having it on a VM gives me somewhat of redundancy. Depending on the number of threads and number of devices you give rancid, it could interfere with observium. The server that runs observium comes into play as well. The more devices and more ports you have, the more threads you need. Observium is much more important to me than rancid; however, rancid is really important. That is another reason why I separated them. Then I have an NFS mount between rancid and observium so it can see rancid. I don't have a history of configurations in observium. I am not sure how that works. That's where websvn excels. With websvn the network guys can see what changed between revisions. So with websvn, I didn't spend much time on setting up history of configuration changes in observium. I haven't setup smokeping. The network guys always tell me they don't care about icmp testing to determine latency. Mainly because some routers/switches, that participate in QoS, will make icmp lowest priority and put the router traffic, voice traffic, and sometimes video traffic (depending on the device) higher priority. The part that I love though is when I am working with them to troubleshoot a network problem, they want a trace route. I always say to them well I thought you didn't care about icmp and trace route uses icmp. :) Inside observium in the graph section of the device in the subsection of poller, it shows icmp response. I think that is enough for me and the network guys. I have a working installation of rancid and I can see the current configuration of my devices. Question: How do I view the old configurations (previous versions). I noticed when I view the config it says "Latest"....I'm assuming I can set it up to view old configs. Just don't know how.

Overview of VLANs

Hey everybody, in nedi there is a nice feature where I can see all devices (and ports) with a specific vlan on a map. Is there any similar feature in observium which I just missed to find? Would it be possible to extend the search on the ports-page to also specify VLANs? Would you accept external patches for stuff like this? I also wrote a small extension for querying the number of active connections on a FWSM (and possibly ASA). Pagination of Ports > Customers

Hi, Currently I have about 100 devices and 8000+ ports (dot1q sub interfaces, pseudowires, etc). I don't have any performance issues. But... Currently I have 300+ interfaces classified as "customer". It takes about 9 seconds for the page to load because everything get loaded all at once. My actual customer interfaces would easily exceed 1000. Is there a way I can paginate Ports > Customers? Much like how it's presented in Ports > All Ports? Or is this something that is currently not possible? Thanks

I set Rancid up with SVN instead, but when I make a change and re-run "rancid-run" there is still only the "Latest" tab in observium. I know that observium only goes into the directory and retrieves the configurations and displays it, but how do I display the older version? Rancid configs need to have identical names to the host devices in observium.... If I point observium to search for configs in "$config['rancid_configs'][] = '/usr/local/rancid/var/networking/configs';" how does it know which is old and new? Or is there something I'm missing?

Observium Gone Crazy, bro?

Hi All, I have an unusual issue in that after the last two updates (not that it was as a result), that Observium slams me with some 3000 "up/down" messages of all the devices in my network. The emails all come in a flood over a couple of minutes. Is there any reason that this should occur within Observium? Thanks, Ry
