Smokeping, Rancid and Observium

Yeah you are hijacking a thread, but whatever. I'll change the subject line and start a new thread :) I have rancid and websvn running on the same box. That box is separate from observium. I did this because I wanted rancid to run on a vm. Having it on a VM gives me somewhat of redundancy. Depending on the number of threads and number of devices you give rancid, it could interfere with observium. The server that runs observium comes into play as well. The more devices and more ports you have, the more threads you need. Observium is much more important to me than rancid; however, rancid is really important. That is another reason why I separated them. Then I have an NFS mount between rancid and observium so it can see rancid. I don't have a history of configurations in observium. I am not sure how that works. That's where websvn excels. With websvn the network guys can see what changed between revisions. So with websvn, I didn't spend much time on setting up history of configuration changes in observium. I haven't setup smokeping. The network guys always tell me they don't care about icmp testing to determine latency. Mainly because some routers/switches, that participate in QoS, will make icmp lowest priority and put the router traffic, voice traffic, and sometimes video traffic (depending on the device) higher priority. The part that I love though is when I am working with them to troubleshoot a network problem, they want a trace route. I always say to them well I thought you didn't care about icmp and trace route uses icmp. :) Inside observium in the graph section of the device in the subsection of poller, it shows icmp response. I think that is enough for me and the network guys. I have a working installation of rancid and I can see the current configuration of my devices. Question: How do I view the old configurations (previous versions). I noticed when I view the config it says "Latest"....I'm assuming I can set it up to view old configs. Just don't know how.

Overview of VLANs

Hey everybody, in nedi there is a nice feature where I can see all devices (and ports) with a specific vlan on a map. Is there any similar feature in observium which I just missed to find? Would it be possible to extend the search on the ports-page to also specify VLANs? Would you accept external patches for stuff like this? I also wrote a small extension for querying the number of active connections on a FWSM (and possibly ASA). Pagination of Ports > Customers

Hi, Currently I have about 100 devices and 8000+ ports (dot1q sub interfaces, pseudowires, etc). I don't have any performance issues. But... Currently I have 300+ interfaces classified as "customer". It takes about 9 seconds for the page to load because everything get loaded all at once. My actual customer interfaces would easily exceed 1000. Is there a way I can paginate Ports > Customers? Much like how it's presented in Ports > All Ports? Or is this something that is currently not possible? Thanks

I set Rancid up with SVN instead, but when I make a change and re-run "rancid-run" there is still only the "Latest" tab in observium. I know that observium only goes into the directory and retrieves the configurations and displays it, but how do I display the older version? Rancid configs need to have identical names to the host devices in observium.... If I point observium to search for configs in "$config['rancid_configs'][] = '/usr/local/rancid/var/networking/configs';" how does it know which is old and new? Or is there something I'm missing?

Observium Gone Crazy, bro?

Hi All, I have an unusual issue in that after the last two updates (not that it was as a result), that Observium slams me with some 3000 "up/down" messages of all the devices in my network. The emails all come in a flood over a couple of minutes. Is there any reason that this should occur within Observium? Thanks, Ry

observium does not work with recent versions of MySQL

Hey everybody, I don't know whether this already came up, but with recent versions of mysql (like in the latest openSUSE) many features (VLANs, Ports, Routing, Events) of observium are no longer accessible. This is because of a new default "sql_mode = strict_trans_tables" which don't longer allow constructs like INSERT INTO `ports-state` (`port_id`) VALUES ('4713') in tables without default values for the other columns. The solution was a sql-mode="" in my.cnf. I suppose this will sooner or later also hit Debian/ Ubuntu. Perhaps you might fix this in one of the following versions? Otherwise observium over fulfilled all my needs and wishes. mikrotik ip add/remove not working

Hi people, we have a mikrotik unit that we monitor and we have a PPPOE interface on it, that we monitor the PPPOE interface sadly drops every so often and the IP on it changes … ( I know dynamic ip for pppoe is bad, we are in process of sorting out a static ip ) but for some reason the observium, doesn’t notice the interface ip was removed then readded or even changed !? it notices that the interface is offline and alerts me… but not the IP change or re-add can someone look into this, or tell me where i could begin looking to find the problem regards Simon

DNS Aliases

Hi, I understand that Observium needs the hostnames to be valid, so we tweaked our hosts file with a regex to add an alias to match the device hostnames (as our initial names had some extra info in the names not on the hosts). But this appears to allow me to add devices manually but autodiscovery doesn't seem to be working. Does Observium need it to be the 'main' resolvable hostname rather than an alias? Regards, Emma

Billing View display issue

Hey all, We made a topographical change to a portion of our network last night - to be specific, we separated a large fiber ring into two smaller rings. After this change was made, the Billing View in Traffic Accounting is not displaying new data. Here's the kicker, the data is there; 24 Hour View and Monthly View display as expected. It seems to only affect the Billing View - screenshots attached. This isn't so much of a problem, just an oddity that I noticed. Anyone have a theory here? Regards, SG

Cisco WLC monitoring

Hi all! I know, this is a pretty discussed topic, but from this discussions plans and current state of Cisco's WLC monitoring are not obvious. When I've tried to add it to Observium, it wa correctly identified as Wi-Fi device type, but only device traffic and system temperature are shown on the main page, no CPU, memory are available. imo, 1920 will be common for quite a while yet. any chance you can make the scaling formulaic, based on a config parameter? that way you only have to do it once, forever. (bonus: mbp folks are happy, you can be lazy when 8k shows up, etc…) R. PostgreSQL Application monitoring

On the replication servers the same exists but I’d like to monitor the streaming replication delay. I’m just wondering what the best layout would be to bring the data into Observium? MIB files to compile?

Hi there, this may sound a bit stupid but I need to know this for sure: MIB files in Observium don't have to be compiled but to be available under /opt/obersium/mibs/ or(!)/opt/obersium/mibs/[vendor]? Background is a strange feeling that some MIBs are not used at all - so the second question is: how to validate that Observium uses the correct ones so I can verify either that I've done something incomplete or the affected MIBs are not valid or incomplete at all. ricoh toner level 150%

Graphing Apple Airport traffic

Firstly, I have to say how impressed I am with the clean, purposeful implementation of Observium. One of the main reasons I was looking for such an SNMP network manager was to monitor my four apple airport base stations. Whilst Observium recognises such devices, and graphs the wirelessNumber from the AIRPORT-BASESTATION-3-MIB if does not graph the corresponding physicalInterfacesTable traffic. Whilst the ifTable is graphed this doesn't actually include the wireless connections. This information would be very useful to determine how many packets are being passed on the wireless interface and at what speed. I've yet to dig into the structure of the code much, but presumably the physicalInterfacesTable could be logged/graphed using code very similar to that used for the ifTable. Something that would also be very useful, would be to list the currently attached clients which could be reported in a similar manner to the ARP/NDP Table using information sourced from the wirelessClientsTable to display MAC address and speed/signal strength/noise. This information could be instantaneous rather than logged as the airport base stations appear not to actually return the number of packets passed despite the MIB supporting this. This looks like the simpler task. Finally, some might be interested in the DHCP allocations, but as I run all my base stations in bridged mode that wouldn't be of interest to be. So, before I start looking at the code, I thought I should ask if anybody is already looking into this? Thanks, Steve

I've specified the proxy server details in the config.php file, but am not confident that connections are actually getting through. It's quite possible that the geocoding URLs are not currently permitted through the proxies. I need some more ammo though to go back to my proxy admins so that I can get their help in permitting this connectivity if it's denied. Are thereany commands I can run or debugging flags I can toggle to help extract more details? Hi, I recently installed Observium CE and noticed some very weird behavior. Observium monitors currently 3 devices: 1 Debian Server + 1 Debian workstation + 1 Ubuntu workstation. The Debian workstation is shutdown overnight and rebooted in the morning, nicely shown in the Event logging: Shutdown: *<date time> System Device status changed to Down (ping)* Reboot: *<date time> System Device status changed to Up <date time> Reboot Device rebooted after <hours min sec> * That's all fine. But now the weird thing is that for the Server the Event log says almost at the same time: *<date time> System Device status changed to Down (snmp)* and when the workstation is rebooted, the Server Event log says at almost the same time: *<date time> System Device status changed to Up* Graphs for the server don't get updated/have data for the time the Debian workstation is down. The Ubuntu workstation runs 24/7 and graphs get properly updated during time the Debian workstation is down. I would expect that what happened with the workstation should have no effect on the data collection of the Server. Details: Observium CE 0.14.4.5229 OS Debian 7 (Server + Workstation) Ubuntu 10.40 LTS (Workstation 24/7) How do I get this working properly? Thanx, Pieter

is anyone else seeing a 500 apache error and blank login after upgrade to 5536? im not seeing anything in the logs to suggest errors, and it was working fine prior to upgrade last entry in observium.log is just prior to upgrade machine is ubuntu precise running observium on amazon ec2 beautifully. if I’m alone on this it must be the machine/instance thanks in advance NT

Odd issue with recent update - UnpingableRRD & UnpingableMySQL

All, We’ve been running Observium on Ubnutu 12.04 for a little over a year now, and after applying the latest community update, we seem to have devices periodically reporting as down. The error I’m getting is bouncing between UnpingableMySQL and UnpingableRRD. IPSec Tunnels

All, I've noticed that for Cisco ASAs the Routing--IPSec Tunnels section is not accurate. It lists all tunnels that have ever been made and marks them as active, even though the tunnel may not exist anymore. I believe that the OID shows the active tunnels is 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.171.1.2.3.1.7 Also, is there a way to alert on this list changing?
