RANCID integration

Hi, I am trying to integrate RANCID for Observium, however the basic installation of rancid on Ubuntu 12.04 eludes me. Most tuts out there are for 11.04, or are quite dated. I have gotten to the point where running sudo su -c /var/lib/rancid/bin/rancid-cvs -s /bin/bash -l rancid Should produce the right files. I don't get that, rather I get this: rancid@ObserviumNYC:/$ sudo su -c /var/lib/rancid/bin/rancid-cvs -s /bin/bash -l rancid /var/lib/rancid/bin/rancid-cvs: 73: /etc/rancid/rancid.conf: rancid-Amsterdam::: not found /var/lib/rancid/bin/rancid-cvs: 74: /etc/rancid/rancid.conf: rancid-admin-Amsterdam:: not found /var/lib/rancid/bin/rancid-cvs: 75: /etc/rancid/rancid.conf: rancid-New_York:: not found /var/lib/rancid/bin/rancid-cvs: 76: /etc/rancid/rancid.conf: rancid-admin-New_York:: not found If anyone had successfully done this, I need some steps that I seem to be missing. I had installed cvs, manually. Sensors & syslog Questions

Hi, I have been trying observium for the last few weeks and am happy with it. However, I couldn't get the sensors (temperature & voltage) and syslog to work. It doesn't even show up in the health drop down menu!. Does observium obtain the sensors data using lm-sensors or ipmi? And is there any other configurations steps to be done (other than in the wiki or documentation)?. Regarding syslog, I tried rsyslog and syslog-ng and followed the solutions posted in wiki & mailing list for similar issues but no luck!, the tab still says that no syslog entries found although its enabled and running (Note: I am using CentOS & RHEL). What am I missing exactly? Many Thanks,

Axis labeling for graphs

Hi... Maybe this is a novice question. I do have observium set up for a few days now and works quite well. Thanks to all involved. But there is one thing I do miss. Is it possible to label the axis for graphs? eg. the Diskusage graph. The x axis is the timeline (which is easy to detect) but the y axis is percentage of usage. But it would be way clearer if you would add label to the x and y axis to clearly know in which unit is measured here. Especially when you hop between graphs. If Observium thinks a device is down it's either because it can't ping it, or it doesn't get an SNMP response from it. Check you can snmpwalk the device from the Observium server. It's always the firewall, or the acls. Adam. device down

So, I have to say that after reinstalling Observium, but keeping my config.php intact, everything works---almost too well. I know it needs tweaking because right now, I have a message that a device is down, and I am able to log into it. Not only that, but O tells me that the box has been down for some time, yet I am able to ping from it. What kind of tweak would this need? many do this in enterprise environments to abstract away the underlying agony of lease-replacement or (oftentimes politically forced) hardware-refresh headaches. dedicate the entire esxi host to the one vm, rather than bare metal backup/restore|reinstall. Very Large Environment

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help. We are deploying Observium in a very large environment. We are upwards of 6,000 devices and 300,000 ports. I don't think we are going to be able to poll this in 5 minutes. This is what we have done so far: - Distributed polling - Polling - 8 VMs - 4core, 8GB RAM each - MySQL - 4 core, 8GB RAM - Web Interface - 4 core, 8GB RAM - NFS Server (for centralized /opt/observium - except for the MIBS directory, which is copied across each server) - moving to an EMC VNX in 2 weeks. - rrdcached being implemented (any assistance here is helpful) - Modified poller-wrapper.py to distribute the devices that poll within 120s across multiple instances of poller-wrapper.py running on multiple hosts. Devices that poll in more than 120s are polled on separate servers at 15 minute intervals. - poller-wrapper has been modified to allow for multiple instances just like poller.php with MODULUS distribution - Each instance of poller-wrapper.py gets an instance number and the total number of instances. - All of the devices with the last poll time < 120 seconds are MOD'ed with the device_id and the total number of instances and compared to the instance number - device_id MOD total_instances = this_instance - Tuning threads in each poller-wrapper.py - currently at 16 threads and 2 instances on each 4 vCPU server for 32 threads running at once or 8 threads per core - The DC is on the west coast and that presents latency problems. We may need to address with distributed polling - We are at 1024MB in php.ini - We are using xcache (tuning help is appreciated - or should we just turn it off)? My questions are: - How can I change the default RRD behavior to use 15 minute intervals instead of 5 minute intervals - 15 minutes x 2 weeks - 2 hours x 5 weeks - 4 hours x 12 months - We want to keep the max/min/average/87.5th percentile (since only 8 measurements per 2 hours) - I don't see the configuration items for that. - Would we be better with a few big boxes rather than small VMs?
