Thanks for clues in troubleshooting a problem with high DNS query rates from Observium. I've been looking at Observium for network monitoring, and really like it so far, except that makes repeated DNS queries at a very high rate. For example, an Observium box monitors an old Cisco 2651XM router in the same physical location. Running a capture on the DNS server, we see the Observium box made over 200 queries for the router's hostname in a 7-second interval. Also, the DNS server correctly responded to every one of these, usually within 20 ms. What would cause so many DNS queries (and apparent non-caching of the responses)? This behavior is thrashing the logs on the DNS servers. This is with Observium Community Edition 0.13.10.4586 running on Debian Wheezy. Thanks again dn

Latest subscription version and Map issues

Evening all :-) I have had a quick look at the google page listed in the the doc, and also had a good search of google in general. I have a smallish but problematic issue with the overview page. In the old version (before update) I did not have any issue with this, howver the page defaults to the USA, and well I am in the UK - I have tried playing around with the region setting in the Docs (not a lot is discussed about "what" it actually does, but i have had a good play) to no avail. Google api doc page mentioned setting the region to "England" so I set : [map] => Array ( [region] => England [resolution] => countries [dotsize] => 10 [realworld] => [api] => google-mc [zooms_per_click] => 1 But it still defaults to the USA (middle of) :/ Now the second issue is we have set the device properties > System Location to be "Greenwich View Place, London, UK" which initially showed the devices in the correct place, then after an hour or two, its now 3 miles off to the East :( (and there I was thinking - wow thats good) :) So any help - guidance would be much appreciated :) -- Kind regards, Chris

Searching in the FDB-Tables

Hi all :-) When i search for a specific mac-address inside the FDB-Table i get no results with the default search options. Only if i deactivate the Options for Vlan and VLAN names. Empty ADSL and SLA rrd

Morning all, I've just started trailing observium, and it's looking like a great system. Router health and interface counters seems to be logged and graphed correctly, so it's starting to look like a viable alternative to some of the larger closed source systems. I especially like the simplicity of the design which should allow for some additional sensor development down the that I'll submit back. So kudos on the system, I quite like it. Now - onto the issue, and I'm assuming given the size of the user-base this is likely to be configuration, but I've read and re-read the related doco and I'm unable to find anything wrong. I've added a Cisco 877 device, port counters and health are being logged and graphed correctly, but the ip-sla statistics and adsl line statistics are not. The header line includes dsl stats, and those stats appear to update according to the polling schedule, but the graphs do not. CE: Broken detailed Collectd charts

Hi I installed the community edition at the time of the split and have come across an issue with the detailed charts. When I click on the Collectd tab I see the various charts as expected. See the attached screenshot. However, when I then click on one of the charts to see more detail, I get the broken image icon. poller performance

Hi, I'm having problems with the performance of the poller. We have 200 switches and almost 16000 ports included and the poller is having trouble getting them checked in 5 minutes. With 20 threads it's working with a load of 15. When I add more threads it takes longer to get the data from switches. With less threads it also doesn't check all switches in 5 minutes. I'm using new fast hardware. I've implemented all the performance tuning tips on the observium site. I also disabled the checking of fbd-table, arp-table and mac-accounting. When I debug the poller the ports check takes the longest. About 90 % of the total time. 1 switch takes about 8 to 10 seconds now. Is there a way to speed it up? Maybe I can extend the check cycle time to 10 minutes? Distributed poller instances? Hello guys, I'm testing Observium in the company that I work, it's working great, however we realize that Observium is not getting the processors and memory utilization from ours FastIron SX family, which includes SX 800 and SX 1600. The Brocade MLX family that we use are working fine and we are able to get proc and memory, I guess that it's a MIB problem but I couldn't find it on google. Does anyone has this switches been monitored by observium? Hello guys, I'd like to inform you that on my CentOS 6.4 I followed the steps for moving the installation (http://www.observium.org/wiki/Edition_Split#How_do_I_move_to_the_Subscripti on_Edition.3F), but I also had to move the logs folder: mv observium-old/logs observium otherwise the Apache startup gave that error on /var/log/httpd/error_log: (2)No such file or directory: httpd: could not open error log file /opt/observium/logs/error_log. Power meter error graphs

I have a number of power meters from tripplite and obviously they don't have network statistics for traffic. So, I get the attached errors for the ports graphs on the overview page and when I click on the ports, where it takes you to the graphs of all the traffic. I want to be able to disable the display of this, since everything else is correct. Is there an element in code somewhere that I can just comment that out or something? Wrong data in CPU Load graph

Hi, the graphs for the CPU load of a linux server are not accurate. The CPU shows in vSphere client a load of 40-50% but in observium all 4 cores are permanently at 90%. Does anybody know why this happens? Thx Chris

I have been enjoying my Observium installation quite a lot, and I love the nice graphs of traffic and ports. Given that this level of detail can be pulled from the devices, is there anyone/anyway who have been able to use that info to create a URL tracker that could show to what URL's a source IP is going? I'd love to be able to integrate something like that into Observium. Ping Timeouts

Howdy all, I'm getting lots of emails for a few devices that have basic ADSL connectivity. Pings from the Observium box have a high RTT and timeout (I guess). Said emails have the following subject; Device Down: device.network.net (ping) Device Up: device.network.net I am getting these emails 5 minutes apart. Each time the poller runs the host is either back up again or going down again. This is happening for a few devices with congested ADSL connections (which is a separate issue in itself!). I have tried to raise the the timeout options in the config, thus; $config['ping']['timeout'] = 3000; # timeout in ms $config['ping']['retries'] = 6; # how many times to retry the query When I am on the server pinging the devices that cause these alerts, the ping is never higher than 1500ms. Perhaps when the poller runs the delay is higher (although I haven't seen this behavious when running pings for 30+ mins). I did raise it to 6000ms but this didn't stop the alerts either. It seems to me that Observium isn't honoring those values. Has anyone had any problems with these settings before? The default timeout is 500ms which I wanted to raise anyway, but I'm not sure this is having any effect. Cheers, James.

Are the perf_times and devices_perftimes used for anything other than diagnostics at the moment? These tables are the significant majority of the data in our database. I truncated them once to free up some space. I've tested it recently and was amazed by the pretty easy installation of such an intuitive software :-) I've also discovered your splitting editions and your intentions for the future and agree with that. The pricing is correct in front of all the work you (all the devs) have done. The only things I would to know to convince my chief that it's the tool we need, is : do you have a roadmap for the alerting module ? Because, if I've correctly understood, you have done a successful Kickstarter campaign to implement the alerting module, but from my last tests (one of the last free SVN edition, something like r4400) the alerting module wasn't really enabled, even after changing the config.php and setting the mailing alerts (with the right SMTP relay, recipient, etc...). Another question is, when (or how if I've done it wrong ...) do you plan to enable mail alerts for hosts down ? I didn't search in all your archives (only the last months) but I'm sorry if the questions was already asked ... and I'm sorry for my rough English ... Hi All, I was wondering if there was a way to get a copy of Observium to be a collector and then somehow send that data to a display server. Our issue is that we would like to collect the stats as close to the devices as possible and then transport them over to the central server where we can view them all. Hi Guys, As we talked about in April, to sustain development we need to develop a revenue stream. The temporary solution in April was the Kickstarter, which funded 6 months of development for the alerting system. To fund development after that, we've decided to try a relatively inexpensive subscription scheme. http://www.observium.org/Edition_Split The intention is to provide enough for free to keep the people who wouldn't ever pay happy, and try to keep the price low enough that everyone else can pay without worrying too much about it. Memory Usage: what is there displayed?

Port groups under device

Hi, i wonder if its possible to group port types (eg. all 10GigE) of a specific device. We have some core switches that have lots of modules with a huge amount of ports. If I click to see the graphs of that device it takes way to long while it loads all of the ports of that device. Like: switch1 ------> Module 1 ------> Module 2 ------> PortChannels ------> TenGig ------> VLANs switch2 etc. It would be much faster/easier to go directly to the desired module/port group. Monitoring an NFS share?

We have our backup storage mounted as an NFS share on our devices. We want to monitor each of these shares individually from the servers themselves (Not from the backup server, as that machine is not under our control). I am loving Observium so far but cannot figure out how we can accomplish this task. Disk monitoring is already in place so this doesn't seem like too much of a reach as the mounted share shows up in df -h output. Any tips would be appreciated.

+1 hack in all of switchmap.pl so I can take it out of cron :-) --- am just curious, is it possible to get the ARP / NDP Table to show the IP addresses associated with the ports instead of just the VLAN ID? Is this possible to configure, or just not with what info the Cisco switches are providing? Sorry if this is explained somewhere, just didn't seem to find anything related to this.

Hi, after som updates (now on the latest public SVN) I have lost temperatures on my SuperMicro boxes. And on some the storage as well. Hi, I understand the change. And personally I think the price is oke, but I don't hope it will sky-rocket in the near feature. For us the MOST important thing is the Alerting (eg. IF up/down) part. But right now it's very limited and not working very well for us. Make it more less-complicated would be nice :-D When we can use it as reliable monitoring platform too, we are in! One other part: also support RHEL/CENTOS. It's an widely used enterprise OS and can't be ignored imho. - Gerwin

Bug in SLA addition?

Putting together a test box on CentOS 6.4 today to get a feel for it. If it works for us (though there are some hurdles), we'll look at it as a long term replacement to our largely homegrown MRTG installation. One of the many things I was happy to find that Observium is doing out of the box is Cisco IP SLA graphing. However, I'm running into an issue. The rrds are not being created and the graphs are empty. I set up config.php to enable_sla, and taking a clue from something I came across in the archives, I ran: ./poller.php -d -h <hostname> In the debug, a couple of things show up: SLA 121: jitter IP SLA SVC to Villages Low Priority... Running observium on multiple hosts

I'm looking for some feedback/ideas on how others may have implemented Observium in a multi-site capacity. We are currently using MRTG to provide our data collection and graphing. While Observium isn't a perfect replacement for us, it goes a long way towards replacing much of what MRTG does. Our current setup involves a large university campus. We have core, distribution, and access layers, and at the distribution layers we've implemented monitoring systems for packet capture and (you guessed it) MRTG. This allows for: - Data collection to continue even if a distribution layer site is isolated from the core - Prevents data collection bandwidth from impacting the core Our MRTG data presentation is largely homegrown, and how we go about it isn't important. What I'm looking for are suggestions on how one might take a multi-server setup and allow someone to search or navigate to a given building or switch without having to guess as to which distribution site it's out of. Ideas rattling around my head right now involve: - Coding up the search function so that it not only searches the local site, but also all of the other servers - Coming up with some static page that indicates that a given building is off of a given installation - this one I don't like so much So I'm wondering if this is something someone else has put time and effort into and has a viable solution. -- Eric Stewart - Network Administrator - eric(a)usf.edu University of South Florida, Information Technology

Device Alerts

Hi everyone, On the main front page of Observium (the Overview/dashboard), the device alerts table never seems to empty. I guess it works on a maximum number of entries scheme, new alerts are displayed at the top as they occur and old ones are dropped off the bottom. It looks like we always have problems on our NOC display. Is it possible to remove items from the list, clear them off somehow? Many thanks, James.

That page is how it is, you cant remove things from it because its showing state. Rebooted information goes away after 24 hours. Its actually showing you devices with uptime below 24 hours. Adam. separate diskio graphs for different devices

But yesterday i made an update (to rev. 4572): #cd /opt/observium #svn update #./discovery.php -h none After that i have next problem: - in servers overview tab all graphs ok - when i'm clicking for example on Memory Usage graph, all is ok. Adding a custom OID ?

Hello, I'm a newbie with Observium having just installed it, but now a question has popped up in my head that I could not find a clear answer to by googling. I have a couple of Linux hosts for which I also added in the net-snmpd conf a counter for the number of imapd & others processes. How could I add to a small part of the existing graphed servers, this OID ? (or where should I look in the conf ?) I was thinking maybe defining a new template (if this is the working principle) and adding there these OIDs also for the discovery phase. I was looking at the graphing off of the main page, where you select All Devices, then Bits, and had a quick question about this. I assume this is an aggregate of all interfaces being displayed. What I am curious to know is if the graphs show interfaces that are "technically" duplicates? For example, a straight interface on a juniper device can be ge-1/0/0, but because there is a unit attached to the interface, sort of like a sub-interface, ge-1/0/0.0 shows up as well. The problem here is, its the same statistics for both of the interfaces, in this example. So, if the aggregate graph is looking at all interfaces and includes both in the aggregate graph, well than the aggregate is not correct? Not sure if I explained it correctly, and if not, please let me know. What i am getting at is, it seems as though there is duplicate information being aggregated so the graphs is not accurate, from what it looks like. Thoughts?

Problems after sync to 4532

Sorry if this is the wrong channel to send this to. Not sure what happened, but after syncing to the latest version the web portal seems to be broken. Checking the logs the poller is still working, I just can't access the web page any more. Oh man. This is an ancient historical feature from like 2009 that I think broke in 2009 :) The enabling/disabling option is still in the config. But it won't work. Interface description, auto-add to billing?

I could have sworn I had seen something where I can enable an auto-add feature in order for ports to be automatically added, into the billing piece, with a particular pattern in the port description. Is this something that is available or will be available? i cant seem to find it again for some reason and I remember even seeing the pattern that was given, which would need to change in my particular instance. Any ideas on this one?

SQL query instead of port detail

hi. I just installed another instance ob observium. While my first one is working like a charm (installed 6 weeks ago) this one has a strange behaviour. For example: When I click on a device and then click on the showed graph I do net get the port details with more detailed RRD graph (where you can changes the range with time and date). Instead only a SQL query is showed :( Any ideas what causes the issue? best, Wolfgang

Polling Intervals

So we're relatively new to Observium and hacking out way through getting it integrated and tested in our environment. One common thing (that we can't find in the faq's or documentation) other tools use is the ability to change polling intervals. On our edge firewall, we might want one minute queries while on SAN volumes we might want 30 minute disk checks. Is there any way to adjust that per device/device type/globally? Disable auto adding ports on Mikrotik PPPoE Server

Hi I have two Mikrotik PPPoE Servers added to Observium and it constantly adding new ports as users get connected with PPPoE ports, and then deleted as user disconnects. After some time a lot of ports appear in Deleted Port, that I need to manually delete them, and also disk space grows as new rrd's gets created. I tried adding "bad_if" in config file but without success, because this interfaces don't have description. Also is there any way to permanently delete this previously added port from database and rrd folder. Thanks, Petar Janev

macsuck CAM tables?

I would love to see a Mac Address forwarding table grab in observium for L2 devices. Maybe it's already there, but I couldn't find it. In NetDisco, this feature is implemented using the 'macsuck' tool. *http://www.netdisco.org/readme.html#glossary* I've implemented it before in sloppy perl using the Bridge mib. * http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk362/technologies_tech_note09186a008… * The gist for collection is: - determine the list of active vlans - for each vlan get a list of mac addresses per 'bridge port' - lookup a translation of bridgeport to ifindex If you correlate this data with a global ARP table and DNS, you get a killer feature. "Lookup the switch port where a given host was last seen. (and hopefully where it still is)" Because this can be a pretty dynamic dataset, you'll also probably want to maintain the list by putting a last seen datestamp and rolling out old entries. I think I've found a few hints at some development interest in the past about this sort of feature. Has it gotten any traction? Cheers, Joel

cisco chassis temperature sensors gone

Hey, I've just noticed, we have no longer have chasis temperature senors on any Cisco 3560 switches, while it still shows temperature from SFP modules. Debug discovery snmpwalk shows sensor name only, no entSensorValue. Was it polled other way before? Evenlog says its gone like months ago, on march of this year :)

Unable to override sysLocation

Hi, Firstly, the process to add graphs is a nice and simple one, so thanks for that. I'm trying to add graphs with different configurations and variable names, and I think I've gotten somewhere, however I'm getting a broken graphs image. I've checked for extra whitespace and have not found any. Neither do I end the files with "?>"; Any idea what the problem might be? Thanks, Mike Y. PHPSESSID don't set

Hi all, I install observium on debian 6. mcrypt installed. I have a problem with PHPSESSID. If I click to some link after logon, ex. all devices, I return to logon page. I try to select "Remember me", but it not help. In google chrome I see, that cookies from observium domain are not present. PHPSESSID is empty. Please advice, how I can solve this problem. I have a cisco router terminating a QinQ trunk on a GigabitEth port, the 2 tags are actually 802.1AD "translated" to cisco `ISL', and I would like to track the bit/s t/p on each (outer) S-TAG. There's no interface that corresponds to the S-TAG only; you get the entire trunk or several thousand sub-interfaces which correspond to the C-tags. The router has no trouble at all keeping a counter on the S-TAG level vlans: ROUTER#show vlans dot1q Total statistics for 802.1Q VLAN 1179: 1043211296 packets, 392860154434 bytes input 1318271657 packets, 1413383465338 bytes output Total statistics for 802.1Q VLAN 1180: 12901924856 packets, 5689677372911 bytes input 16833259171 packets, 17373955952108 bytes output So, the 1st task would be to find the MIB, if any for these "outer" tags, and attempt to write code for an add-on to discover and graph them. Is there a way to only show Overall traffic, not peering traffic, or "This Month"? Or how would I correct this to show properly anyway? Is it a matter of selecting the graph that I want to see and adding another line as you would do with minigraphs? Sorry if this has been asked already. I have scrolled thru the posts but I haven't come across the answer to my question yet. When I run ./poller-wrapper.py manually it works fine; I get graphing data for most of my devices, and the graphs show up. But if I let cron run it, nothing shows up? What am I missing? It's a clean build of Ubuntu 12.04, and Observium 0.13.9.4471. Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated. Yes, I'm a newb. :-)

Is the only option for the frontpage map "world"? I really only have network gear in NYC and Amsterdam, Holland. Any type of changes to regions, or map just got me an error. search MAC in FDB

Hi, trying to use the search option in observium. If i go to FDB Tables and pick a random MAC-Address and enter it in the searchfield there is no result. Whereas when i do this with any other search-option (ipv4;MAC Address;ARP/NDP) and enter appropriately, there is an result. Tested with 0.13.8.4262 and 0.13.7.4172. Polling missed?

Out of curiosity, where would I begin looking for any issues with missed polls or graphs not showing data for a certain period of time? I have looked under /var/log and do not see anything that stands out. I'm not sure if there are any other locations i can investigate this on. I am running ubuntu server 12.04.3 LTS. Attached are a couple of graphs you can see the gap of data not presented, or possibly missing? The weird part is, i have about 90% of my devices that show this gap, but the other 10% doesnt. Theres no specific network device/factor that would be have created this either. Any thoughts/suggestions/ideas?

Windows server issue with disk space

Hi. I found Observium after reading a post on Reddit (if you're out there, whoever made the post, you have my eternal thanks!), and I've got it setup and running pretty much OK, but I've run into an issue with one specific Windows host. Observium accesses and sets it up OK except for one disk volume - the drive is approximately 15 Tb in size, but Observium is only reporting it as being 8Tb, and I can't figure out why. Can anyone suggest what I may have configured incorrectly? I initially used SNMP V1 to discover/configure this host - could that be the issue, perhaps? Thanks for any input, and a huge thanks to the guys (and gals?) who write this stuff, so that those of us who can't code our way out of a wet paper bag can still satisify the demands of manglement! "No devices found" shown on Devices pages

Many of the pages beneath the "Devices" menu incorrectly display "No devices found". For example, choosing "All Devices" lists two devices, but clicking any of the controls in the '<div class="well">' segment - even the "Detail" button which is active by default - no longer shows the two devices but again reverts to "No devices found". Further down the "Devices" menu, "Servers (2)" is shown, but choosing this also displays "No devices found". Other menus, such as "Ports", appear to display all of their data correctly. This occurs with both SVN-3763 and the latest SVN-4451. When I spoke to another Observium user, they had the same issue, but no solution. Has anyone else seen this problem, or can anyone suggest anything I might do to resolve the issue? Many thanks, Stuart

Automated CSV/XCL/etc Traffic Billing Report?

I was looking at the Traffic Billing piece and was curious to know if there is a way to setup an automated monthly report for each individual "customer" that is listed under that area? I dont seem to find anything at the moment. Would be cool to automate that and shoot out the raw data, in addition to the graphs for each individual "customer" on a monthly basis to whatever email address(s) specified. Would that ever be a feature or does anyone know how it could be accomplished?

Hi, thanks for the development of observium! I want to use Observium to calculate the traffic of my clients. Now I have the following problem: Under "used" always "0B" is displayed. The same goes for "Over Usage" where only "-" is displayed. In the bar where the traffic usage should be displayed in percent is nothing. In the observium main directory I have found the file poll- billing.php I run it, but unfortunately nothing has happened here. I would be very grateful for a little assistance. is_file() usage for rrd file existance

Gday folks. I'm fiddling around with remote RRD storage via rrdcached. Most of the rrdtool stuff is wrapped in includes/rrdtool.inc.php which is wonderful from this perspective. Not within this include is the usage of is_file() to determine the existence of an rrd file. In discovery the pattern is something like If( ! is_file( some.rrd ) ) { rrdtool_create ( … )} In graphing the pattern is something like If ( is_file( some.rrd ) { graph some stuff… } Would there be any support for moving this usage into a rrdtool_file_exists( ) thin wrapper for is_file ? This would make it much easier to extended includes/rrdtool.inc.php to support storage of RRD's on remote storage (and potentially distribute over multiple remote storage devices ..) Thoughts? I had a quick check for usage of scandir/readdir to determine all the rrd's in a 'device' directory, but this doesn't seem to be a common pattern. My other evil thought is to use rename_function/override_function to work around this, but it seems very very WRONG. Cheers, Peter

Dbm sensors and interface names

Hi, I'm watching the dBm sensors on a Brocade host, and I notice that on /health/metric=dbm/ and /device/device=X/tab=health/metric=dbm/ there is no sign of the port related to the values being displayed. observium Syslog not recieving syslog msgs

Hi, I have been unable to get the syslog function to work and I can't find any info online that is helping I am just getting the follwoing msg on the webpage No syslog entries found! This device does not have any syslog entries. Check that the syslog daemon and Observium configuration options are set correctly, that this device is configured to send syslog to Observium and that there are no firewalls blocking the messages. Disabling 'Remember Me'

Hi! After updating a week or two ago (after the security update), I installed php-mcrypt on my CentOS node. I also (for good measure, added the disable command (below) in the config.php. Restarted Apache, cleared cache, used multiple browsers, etc ... I still get the following notice/warning at the top of the screen when I log in. Observium now requires mcrypt to be installed for use by the "remember me" function. Please install the php5-mcrypt package on Ubuntu/Debian or the php-mcrypt package on RHEL/Centos. Alternatively, you can disable this feature by setting $config['login_remember_me'] = FALSE; in your config. * * Am I missing something? I just need to have it effectively disabled. I am looking to spice up my frontpage and am currently adding the minigraphs. Is there a way in the config to name each graph as opposed to a custom name for the field? User Creation Failed?

I have been looking around to see what could be the problem for this. I installed a new copy of observium on ubuntu and have followed the instructions given. When I get to the area to create a user by leveraging ./adduser.php , i get a messages stating the User creation failed. Is there something I am overlooking when i do this or some data i can provide or look at that can pinpoint me in the right/general direction?

Kernel version looping events

Hi, Since the auto SVN / discover at 06:00 (BST) today, several of our servers are logging repeated events as follows: 2013-08-29 09:10:25 System kernel -> 2.6.32-71.18.1.el6-0.20.smp.gcc4.1.x86_64 It appears to be occurring on every 5 minute poll: [cid:image001.png@01CEA499.4E1120E0] This is only affecting machines which run pre-configured (static, non-updating) software such as OpenFiler which is the target in the example above. Also at the first poll after 06:00 today, most of the other linux boxes logged events similar to the above, but, they logged it just once and then stopped. I’ve got no idea why / how this would be logged continuously, especially as the result is identical each poll, so any pointers welcome :) Cheers! they're an ASA pair, the on-device hostname/sysName is always sync'd to be same same dns for the m0's can be (is) unique/different. wrapper logic on the addhost check to allow dup sysName if box (via e.g. sysDescr or sysObjectID) is ASA? dunno. Average Packet Size on Cisco-Devices

Hi There, I like seeing the Average Packet Size on Ports since 4361. But unfortunately I don't have data in graphs for all devices. It's working on: - 6500 VSS (Ten/Gig/Vlan/Po) (IOS 15.0) - ASA 55xx - Servers (Linux) - Riverbeds (Linux) - Cisco-WLAN-Controllers It's NOT working (empty graph) on: - 4500 (Ten/Gig/Po) - ASR1001 (Gig/Tu) (IOS 15.3S) - 7301 (Gig/Tu) (IOS 15.1M) - 28xx (Gig/Tu) (IOS 15.0M) - 18xx (Fa/Tu) (IOS 12.4T) Especially on our VPN-Rouers (73/28/ASR) this would be helpful. How can I debug some more things to get it working? Or how can I support you with information that you get it to work? Many thanks in advance, Chris

Hmm. We don't even do anything with the poe information, are we still collecting it? Does the 4500 have any poe blades? Pretty scary walking the poe table would take so long. Adam. RRD Graphs not showing

We have Observium installed on Ubuntu and it has been running for months... Just recently the RRD graphs have stopped appearing on the web pages I have upgraded to the latest version and it still is not working. The RRD files exist with the right permissions and the dates stamps are up to date. Can someone help please? Regards, Adam

slow polling of Cisco 4500 VSS switches

Hi all, We have a very long poll time on some of the devices. We have a few Cisco 4500 switches with a lott of interfaces. For example a Cisco 4506 with 4x 48 ports linecard, the poll time for the device is: [cid:image001.png@01CEA3DD.702B0310] As you can see the poll time changed around 28/29 July. I disabled the device around 31 July, as you can see. We also have Cisco 4500 VSS setups with several hundreds of interfaces, these devices I disabled for now, because the poller couldn't keep up with it. Today I found some time to troubleshoot, and found the above statistics. Beside that a did a poll with debug on. It "hangs" very long on every interface of every device it polls. After looking into that, it seems that it collects all interfaces per metric it polls. I think that is the problem with devices with a big amount of interfaces, because it collects all statistics again for every interface. How can I fix this? Is this by design/Is this a bug? Newbie ?s - map config

Hello all, We’ve recently decided to move from Cacti, and tried Zenoss, and we’re now trying Observium. We’re *really* liking it. Device import went really well, and have been able to tune it to exactly what we need. I’m having issues with the map. The mapping of alerts is a pretty important feature for us, but I can’t seem to get it dialed in. You may certainly assume I know nothing about this mapping feature beyond the “Map Overview Settings” porton of the Configuration Options page. We’re a small campus so the scale of the map is not working out when we use the “US-565”. When the dots render they stack up. Is there a more ‘zoomed in’ option? How does one appropriately choose the ‘location’ data? If I can hop on google maps and put in a string and have it put a pin in the right building, is that string acceptable to use for the location field? I.E. “north hall library” gives me the correct location in google maps, does that mean I can use it for the location string? Since google maps has our building footprints drawn out, I’d prefer to use that layout, is it possible to switch it to that instead of the metro area shtick? some gear that's put up in pairs insists on having the same hostname/sysName, e.g. ASAs. even though their m0 are uniquely reachable, there's no currently obvious way to watch the standby, since even though its DNS is unique, addhost sees sysName and rejects it as being a duplicate. ideas? tks, R.

Incomplete device name (bug?)

Hi all, If I add a device with a hostname of br0.abcdefg , it will show up nicely on the front page, however, when I add a device with a hostname of br0.abcdefgh (or longer), the device's name will be 'br0' on the front page under "device alerts" and "Recent Eventlog Entries". If you hoover over the device name, he popup screen wil display the correct device name. Could this be a bug, or am I doing something wrong ? Thanks. gr, Richard

A version number shouldn't be in there... So I looked at what the memcached agent script was returning and how that was parsed by the poller memcached module. It turns out that there is a difference. hi all i just updated my observium using svn. after the update the graph image is not displaying at all.. i quickly revert back to my orignal version that is 4280 but still not graph image . i have deleted one of my device and then add it back but still no graph image.. ps: to be clear i m talking about no graph image.

Location debug : how ?

Hello, For some reason, on my observium at work, seems that location doesn't want to work. On device menun, still marked as "unkown". I tried to find is there is an issue with the location part, but on a setup at home, it is working. Location like Paris, FR / Belfort, FR still fail into unknown, so I wish to debug what happened, and how to fix it (maybe this an issue with my setup, but I cannot find where). Any hints about that? Hi there, I'm very new to observium and I set up a lot of devices now to be monitored. As I'm managing a big network running on EIGRP I'm missing some things I formerly built in cacti "per hand". I had always an eye on EIGRP queries, EIGRP Topo routes, EIGRP updates and such things. Is it possible to support you to bring in some new graphs into observium? unfortunately I'm not an php-coder but I've got long-term experience in networking and snmp. Nice features where also: - Usage of ISDN-Channels on voice-routers/Gateways (cisco) - Working GFX on MGE-UPS (we've got a big Powerware-Galaxy and want to see output power, battery runtime, and so on) - Working GFX on SmartUPS (older RM1400 - APS OS 3.7.3) (I#m missing output load) - More Sensors monitored of cisco 4500s. and I think I will have many more Ideas ;-) Greetings and many thanks for this great piece of software! Host up/down polling

Hi All, Sometimes I get host down notifications from Observium at the start of a 5 minute poll. Five minutes later I get a host up alert for the same host. I believe that sometimes a busy host will drop the 5 minute "probe" from Observium which is presumably a UDP SNMP packet. As soon as I get such a notification I check the host in question, it is usually up unless it really has gone down, just a bit busy perhaps. [1] Where is this initial checking of device up/down state happening in the code? I have been looking through include/polling and I can see various scripts for different device types. Is there a generic host up/down check that happens for all devices, I'd like to hack in a "if a device recorded as up seems down, wait and check again a couple more times, then mark as down". Cheers, James. [1] So that is a separate issue I need to tackle, ensuring there is no packet loss to hosts and ensuring they aren't too busy to respond. I don't wish to discuss that here though.

Lost sensors from PAN firewall

Hi, Just to say that the problem with broken lines in disk usage chart is not new, I saw this problem monthes ago and I didn't succeeded to find how this is happening, but I didn't try the debug mode. I will come back to you shortly if I find something. It happens only on Windows servers and for a few of my windows servers, especially 2003 servers, they don't do any storage graph at all. Hello, I have the same problem as well some servers on the network interface so big brakes in the lines. It started with this latest update. What's odd is the TX/RX white area does not match up top to bottom. So it's not like obervium could not reach the device. It's like it will process one but not the other at times TX/RX. Broken lines in disk usage chart

What might be causing this disk usage chart to break up like this? Looks like it started acting up after an upgrade a couple of weeks ago. This is a windows 2008 r2 server and the disks are (mostly) iSCSI. It seems to be the only server affected. Cisco IPv6 BGP peers

I've upgraded one of my Cisco 7200 routers to c7200p-adventerprisek9-mz.152-4.S.bin to support IPv6 peer monitoring. I am how ever getting some funny things instead of the IPv6 Peers addresses and other details aren't working like updates: .C..0.......... iBGP ipv6.unicast .C............. eBGP ipv6.unicast There seems to be a newer file from cisco here updated 2001/2010 as apposed to the one included 2001/2003: ftp://ftp.cisco.com/pub/mibs/v2/CISCO-BGP4-MIB.my Otherwise if there is more trouble shooting or snmp walks I can provide that can help solve this please let me know. Ports page performance

Hi All, I've made some changes to how the ports page works to try to improve performance for people with very large installations. If you have issues with the /ports/ page speed, please test the speed of your install by loading /ports/, and trying with 1000 and 10000 ports page sizes. You need to refresh each page a few times to get an accurate page generation time. (the page generation time is at the bottom left) Then update your install with 'svn up' and run the same tests again. Please report back how much performance improvement you see, if any. I've also reduced some of the field sizes for the ports-state table which should reduce MySQL heap usage by about 20%. Thanks, adam.

Hi, The entire applications system was a quick hack I put together in a few hours. Once we have alerting working we intend to try to come up with a better way of doing it. Until then, I wouldn't recommend putting much time in to it. You might have more luck using a munin plugin, if one exists. We can pull munin plugins via the agent. Adam. I've got a postgresql server with several databases in different name spaces and several pg clusters and was wondering if there is support for that. Memory TAB empty on ESXi 5.1

Hi, I have several ESXi5.1 polled by my Observium. Everything is fine except that I have no graphs on the "Memory" TAB. I can see the Real Memory in the Disk Usage TAB. Not detecting ATM Interfaces

Hi, We have a Cisco 7206 router with an OC3 ATM Port Adapter (PA-A3-OC3SMI=). The Ethernet and Serial interfaces show up in Observium, but it does not list the ATM interfaces. Is there anything we can do to get this to work? We have several hundred ATM sub interfaces on this card that I need to be able to monitor. Any help is much appreciated! Observium stops working after r4260

Hello, This morning, I upgraded my r4200 installation to the latest release (r4280). After this update, "./discovery -h none" would not output anything when run. This also means that the DB was not updated to 080.sql. After a lot of troubleshooting I could not determine what went wrong and went back to r4200. Observium worked again after this. I then started upgrading per 10 releases and after r4260, Observium stops working (no output when running "./discovery -h none"). So, for me, r4260 is the last Observium release that works and r4261 is the first one that does not work anymore... This is on CentOS 6.4 with all updates installed: [root@bak observium]# ./scripts/os Linux|2.6.32-358.14.1.el6.x86_64|amd64|CentOS|6.4 [root@bak observium]# Is anybody else experiencing the same issue? Any idea what might be causing this? What additional things can I do to help solve this? -Laurens

Yeah. There are some nasty SNMP implementations around. Cisco and netsnmp is pretty to rock solid in terms of responding. Anything else and you might be hitting SNMP bugs, too. Adam. Hi all, We've got some money in the budget to upgrade our struggling monitoring server, and i'm trying to optimise Observium. We have about 20 GB of RRDs. Poller-wrapper.py runs with 32 workers and regularly goes over the 500-second mark. The web interface is quite sluggish despite php-xcache being installed. I'm wondering if anyone has done testing as to which is the better approach for RRD storage performance: RAM disk or SSD. RAM seems likely to offer better IOPS, but managing the RAM disk is obviously more overhead, and i'm concerned that syncing the RAM disk elsewhere will have too much of a performance hit while it happens (especially during reboot cycles). RAM is $25 per GB, whereas SSD is $3 per GB (or $25 per GB if you use "write intensive" SSDs - presumably these are rated for a larger number of lifetime writes?). My guess at a config for the new box: 12 cores, 64 GB RAM, 4 x 10K RPM 2.5" drives in RAID 10 for OS, 2 x SSD for /opt/observium/rrd. Any other recommendations about which hardware to put our money towards? Do we need to consider other issues like which type of file system to use for /opt/observium/rrd? Thanks in advance, Paul

Observium without DNS

Hi, I think it would be a good idea if it's possible to use observium without dns, or to overwrite the hostname used to get snmp data. I have some devices with internal and external IP adresses, and I'd like to use the internal IP for polling, but the external hostname for the device itself. Comments? Regards, Patrick

If a device is marked down, it'll tell you if it was because of ping or snmp in the eventlog. Either way, if you are having devices continually marked as down, it's an indicator of poor network connectivity or dodgy firewalling. Adam. One thing about Observium, that I find frustrating, is that devices that are definitely up, that are definitely pingable with no drops still show as occasionally being off-line, or down. Sometimes this is worse, or better depending on SVN version. The only remedy seems to be that I have to stop monitoring device. What good is that? When viewing the graphs for a switch it cuts off the names of the interfaces in the Legend (such as "FastEthern") making it so you can't tell one interface from another. I think it would be a *terrible* idea for observium to work without dns. the fact that bofh Adam has pretty much forced it, is a very welcome sledgehammer against the sloppiness of incomplete node deployment habits. ditto with pingability imo. just be glad he didn't make A and PTR records have to match each other (and ^sysName$ too!) ... or at least have an extant PTR, something that is often overlooked. count your lucky stars; the only reason he probably didn't (yet?) is that it might have slowed things down a smidge. /grin/ worse, he could have run through checks against the entireties of rfcs 1122 and 1123, or also compared sysLocation against a LOC record query, before a node gets accepted. ps … perhaps some CNAME wrangling might work suitably for your case. split-horizon views in bind would do the trick for sure. for inspiration, have a chew through http://backreference.org/2010/02/01/geolocation-aware-dns-with-bind/ cheers, R. Lost all port after svn update

Hi all, Today I did a svn update and afterwords the ./discovery -h none. But now it has marked all the ports as deleted. crossbar history

6500/7600 chassis show the crossbar usage in details pane, and I see c6kxbar-1-0.rrd type files on the file system, but hovering over the crossbar bit doesn't show a historical graph, and I can't seem to see a historical graph in any of the other tabs for the device. Am I missing something, or just a site-specific issue? Cheers, Peter

Graphs not generating in Observium

Hi, We have an issue with our new Observium installation. We have performed an Ubuntu SVN install. All required packages and dependencies were installed and configuration steps followed. We have added many devices through Observium interface. However the graphs are not getting plotted. I couldn't find anything coming under the folder "/opt/observium/graphs". root@observe:/opt/observium/graphs# ls root@observe:/opt/observium/graphs# Can you please let us know what could be the issue and help us to correct it? Linux Agent redesign

Hi All, It has turned out that the agent is a little bit difficult to work with, trying to extract data using only shell scripting is a bit of a pain. It's difficult for us to do any form of authentication or encryption, and parsing of the returned data can be a little haphazard because we rely on correct formatting. I've been thinking of alternative designs, possibly using PHP (Perl or Python would probably be better, but they're not viable languages for us) and either an embedded web server or hanging off inetd as it currently does. This would allow us to do encryption, to require some form of authentication and to pass around easier to parse JSON or serialize()'d arrays Personally, I almost always install a PHP CLI interpreter on my servers because I do 'shell' scripting in PHP, but what do the rest of you think? Would you be willing to install php-cli on your servers if you got the ability to do encrypted/authenticated/compressed agent connections? What about if we allowed you to funnel SNMP queries via the agent? (only for UNIX hosts, obviously) adam.
