Hello, is there a way to create an aggregate Disk IO graph for multiple devices ? We have a number of LHN nodes that give us this information in the graphs/type=device_diskio_ops tab and it would be useful to not have to add them up manually. Observium frequently losts "Ignore Until" information

Hello, I've some alerts which i want to ignore till some time. So im pressing "Ignore until". But sometimes this information gets lost and alert appears again. In these situation "Ignore until" button in clean. I think it's have something to do with NX-OS software. Is there any workaround ? The only workaround at this time is to exclude that devices in alert rules. What is very uncomfortable.. Thank you

General Questions for a New User

Dear Sirs: I’m a new user and I currently have a suscription license. I have some questions and I need your support to resolve them! 1- How many devices can manage the platform using a production license (Supcription Edition)? and How many the Community Edition? Is it limited by the amount of equipment or by the parameters to be monitored? I have a project to monitor 300 UPS APC and 5 parameter per device and I need to confirm if it is possible !! 2- Right now, I have Observium installed on a Dell R230 server, Intel Xeon E3-1220V3 / 3.1 GHz, 8 GB DDR3L SDRAM, 2 TB hard drive capacity; I need to document or validate that Observium can be installed without problems on this server! 3- Regarding the license, How can I differentiate between a test installation and the production environment? Enhancement request

Hi, Just two small enhancement requests ;) 1) We love the Search feature to search for IPs and MACs, a true time saver. And adding the ability to sort by the columns would be fantastic. After doing a search for all loopbacks for example, it would be great if we could sort the resulting list by the "Device", "Interface", "Address" or "Description" columns. The list currently seems to sort by "Address", but alphabetically not numerically etc. Use case example, I am programming some explicit-paths for some traffic engineering tunnels, and so I need to find the loopbacks of every router along the path to which I want to fix the TE tunnel. I can search for all loopbacks no problem, but we have lots or them as routers also have multiple loopbacks.. However I am just interesting in "Lo0" on every single router. So after doing the search for all loopbacks, if we could then just click on the "Interface" column heading, that would put all the Lo0's first.. voilà :) 2) We also love the simplicity and power provided by utilizing the [] {} () brackets on descriptions to store the values into the different database fields. But the CDR [] is limited. This is probably one of the most powerful features, as it allows you to not have to configure monitoring, but instead to only configure the network and monitoring then automatically does its thing and follows the network :) We would like to do more with the [CDR] field, but are hamstrung by the fact that the CDR is not converted into bits in the database. The star feature would be to create an alert checker that fires when utilisation breaches the configured CDR. We know this has been requested and requires some code reworking.. We just wanted to add our names to the list of users after this feature. Thanks again for your time and creating such a great project. Because it is so good we still have on our roadmap a desire to put in some time and effort to contribute to the project, and figure out all the OIDs and their mappings etc and attempt to write a page for showing LDP neighbours and various other MPLS things. The original design of Observium was to enforce valid hostnames. We no longer enforce this for adding devices (because some networks are run by insane people who like looking at huge lists of nearly identical IPs), but a lot of the autodiscovery code still uses sysName and forward dns lookups to verify if a device should really be autodiscovered. Hi Adam! I was looking at the ARP/NDP table on the Ports page of some of our machines and currently it displays the vendor of the given device in a tooltip. But it would make much more sense to display - if the MAC address is known - the machine that has the given MAC address instead. Opinion? Has this any chance to get implemented? Regards, Tylla

LDAP auth vs AD server

Hello everybody, I can't access the archives somehow, so if there's a simple direct pointer for this... I've played around with the LDAP config quite a bit now to get it to auth users versus our AD server. So far so good, the somewhat obscure OBS_DEBUG option helps. I believe (!) auth works now, but I have an interesting effect and can still not log into Observium: 1. I use my AD user and the WRONG password I get a lot of debug output, ending in - expected - "Invalid credentials". So far, so good. 2. problem upgrading subscription edition

Hello, I have problems upgrading my Observium installation, get following message when doing the svn update: svn: E155036: Please see the 'svn upgrade' command svn: E155036: The working copy at '/opt/observium/mibs/zte' is too old (format 10) to work with client version '1.9.5 (r1770682)' (expects format 31). You need to upgrade the working copy first. Any idea how to fix that the correct way? Because just doing the svn upgrade on the affected folders does not seem to do it the right way imho. A graph that doesn't quite match the data

Hello, Here's a screenshot of 2 Traffic graphs for a 10G port on a Cisco 6509. The second (week) graph seems accurate, with the spike indicating a little over 300M bits/s. The first (day) graph indicates that the same spike is only 200M bits/s. The actual numbers under the graphs agree that the max is 337.03M. Traffic Why doesn't the first graph show the actual value? Hi, port_label is cleaned field (from unusefull information), generated based on multiple possible Oids (ie ifDescr, ifName). But anyway in db such fields ifDescr and ifName stored as is without changes and can used for alerts, etc. port_label is short as possible for display in most pages. I not see reasons for keep such data ( - Printer) for display in port names. This exactly should be stored in ifAlias (wich is port description). But.. if your device not support correct ifAlias, I can try to parse ifAlias for that os. Rx/Tx Port Errors

Hello, I see several Rx/Tx port errors on my Observium. For example it says Tx: 25 on the home page, but when I click on the interface, the "Errors" graph shows me that Tx 118.69m, and I can not see anything wrong with the Tx when I check the interface errors from the router CLI. How can I verify these alarms are false positive or not? Alarms are not router specific, I got alarms from both Nokia and Juniper boxes. Best

Port Labeling

Hello, I was introduced to Observium in early March, and coming from a Nagios / Cacti type of monitoring, I am completely impressed with the power of Observium. I have CE 17.9.0 and am in the process of deploying it at my location. I have a couple of smart switches that support SNMP, but are not capable of a Port label. Thus, Observium shows the switch as Port 1, Port 2, Port 3 instead of my desired “Port 1 - Bandwidth Control” “Port 2 - Linux Server” “Port 3 - Printer” … that sort of thing. I found that I could use NaviCat to edit the MySQL database to properly label the ports, but then the next polling cycle restores the generic port label 5 minutes later. Is there any way for me to modify the polling to leave the label alone? I don’t want to look into “locking” the [port_label] field of the database tables. If I may also ask, is there any way to tell Observium that a down port is the normal (green) condition? I have some switches with ports that are not active, and if something is plugged into them, an alert would be handy. Thank you again for this amazing software. Christian

I'm getting the message: Setting 'web_url' for "External Web URL" not set or incorrect, please update on Global Settings Edit page. I'm currently connecting to the URL: https://observium.whoi.edu/ And the setting is: http://observium.whoi.edu/ However, the settings page will not accept the 's' character. Hi, we started to upgrade our juniper EX switches to 15.X release and notice a change of behaviour in error reporting at interface level in observium the problem lays that taildrops (which are activated by default and cannot just be, and isn't even a good practice to disable them) are now reported as errors in observium Output errors: Carrier transitions: 29, Errors: 0, Drops: 177209, Collisions: 0, Aged packets: 0, FIFO errors: 0, HS link CRC errors: 0, MTU errors: 0, Resource errors: 0 show interfaces queue xe-0/0/4 .... Tail-dropped packets : 177209 ...... prior to 15.X we only received reports/mails if the Errors Value was > 0. Honestly, we only care about errors, because taildrops will always happen from time to time I don't know if this is a change in behaviour of juniper snmp counters or that this is a flag in observium we can toggle? thx Arne

Clearing Alerts

Hi all - I have created my very first alert checker and can see that it creates and alert according to the checker criteria. My checker looks for speed on a port and alerts if ge 100M. >From what I can see, once that alert has been created I do not have the ability to 'clear' the alert so even if the port speed drops below 100M the alert remains in failed state and if the checker criteria are met again a new alert is not created. My use case is that I need to monitor the bandwidth utilisation on this specific port on an ongoing basis and be alerted each time the speed exceeds say 100M. Appreciate any pointers to show me where I am going wrong. Cheers Mal

Switch ports disappearing

Hi all, I've a TP-Link T2600-28TS whose ports are continuously detected and then deleted after 2-10 minutes: this happens about every 6 hours, while other switches in the same environment does have normal behaviour. Thanks Adam – Have updated to rolling (9128) and can see the groups is now different but I am still not seeing any members in my group ☹. I am thinking that the ruleset itself is not working because I created another group that does work using “device.hostname match *qld*”. Is the ruleset definition ‘port.port_descr_descr match *L3*’ correct if I want all ports with a parsed description including L3? My port description is something like… CUST: ABC Cust (Channel Wireless L3)…….. I was expecting the ruleset to match on *L3* and return results including L3. Hey all – probably a dumb newbie questions so apologies… I am trying to define groups based on the contents of the port description. I am using this as a training ground before I move on to alert checkers! I have edited the port description to include L3 and I can see that Observium is retrieving the port descriptions correctly however I do not seem to be able to define a group correctly. I have created a group as below: i.e. Based on containing “L3” in the port description add to the group. I can confirm that there are 15+ devices containing “L3” – example… If I do a search on ports containing L3 I retrieve the full list of devices. I originally thought I had made the query too tight but I’ve tried a number of broad combinations and never seem to have any members found. I am using 18.3.9073 (3rd March 2018). Traffic Accounting

Hi all - Have just upgraded to the subscription version and looking to understand what functionality I can get out of the traffic accounting. There are 2 initial aims I'd like to get some thoughts about. 1. Creating alert/email notification based on the outbound total traffic from specific ports. Example: if total outbound data for the current billing period is equal to 50% of quota, email customer. Similarly for say 75%, 90% and 100% of quota. 2. Configure bill to compare only outbound traffic to quota when calculating overusage. I am hoping someone may have tried previously and can give me some direction. Appreciate any thoughts. Mal

New device / custom graph

Greetings o/ I have an instance with observium running and am trying to add a new device/graph for it. There seems to be little information for this. I tried looking into the mailing list archive as well at http://postman.memetic.org/pipermail/observium/ but get a 403. So, forgive me for asking again what must be a frequent question. My device is a PDU from "Gude" described by MIB GUDEADS-PDU818X. I can see that there are already devices from "Gude" in the source like "Gude Expert PDU" described by GUDEADS-PDU8110-MIB but so far I have not been successful. Hello, In the menu Ports -> Pseudowires -> All types i can only find the pseudowires that start on a cisco machine. Nu juniper are in that list (there are a few as destination node). Do I have to configure something to show the Juniper routing instances? any examples of developing a new PDU in observium?

Going to try and setup a couple Starline Bus heads in observium, basically a big PDU with it’s own MIBS. http://www.starlinepower.com, the Critical Power Monitoring units. Anyone have any examples of something similar or a new PDU that could point me in the right direction for this? Thanks, -Darrell

Logging changes to Observium

Is there a way to log who is doing what whithin Observium? I would like to be able to tell who is adding or deleting devices, making changes to the config, or making any changes to Observium for that matter. I am not able (allowed) to lock down the config by making changes in the config.php. I have to keep the configs open to be changed by anyone on the team. This is truthfully a null point as the admin and root passwords are mandated to be stored in our team password vault anyway. I'd like a way to make others accountable for their actions. Thanks, Josh

Add ap9606 using powernet-mib

Hi All Im trying to work out how to add power information to observium (manually as it doesnt seem to be picked up) I currently monitor a ap9212 power switch (network card is a ap9606) but it only gives me lan stats and no power information I found if I added the powernet-mib to my mid browser and then did a walk on the apc private oid .1.3.6.1.4.1.318 it revealed all sorts of information which is very useful! I can provide read access to the device if need be I would be so happy if we can get power statuses off these tho :D Regards Simon - Hestor Ltd

Posted this earlier today in Jira as an Improvement but got to thinking I should have first emailed here... ***************** Am an MSP / MSSP that's new to Observium... See from the Device drop down the ability to Connect Via Telnet / SSH / etc to some of my devices (eg Vmware) but don't see this option for my (SonicWALL) firewalls. Would very much like to have the ability to manually configure a device-specific Connect Via link. For example... https://1.2.3.4 https://1.2.3.4:4443 I've looked through several of the MySQL tables where I thought I might find this info but couldn't find anything. Am I just missing it or is this not an option today? -- Randy Schultz

So, i am playing/testing it with some Cisco devices. A strange thing that i observed is that the FDB tables show mac addresses on switch interfaces that are in trunk mode only (dot1Q flagged). MAC accounting problem

I have MAC accounting enabled on our BGP router trying to see what the usage is of our transit provider is over our peering link. They send me a graph for the week that looks like this. Migrating to a new server

We just purchased an upgraded server in which to host Observium on and I would like to know the “best” way to migrate over all of our monitored devices. I’m not concerned with any of the graphed data being migrated, or any of the old Observium config. I only want to do a mass export of all of the devices and their properties. Will a dump of the ‘devices’ and ‘devices_locations’ tables suffice? Are there other tables/directories/configs I need to be concerned about? Hi, I can't say for Axis bit definitely success with Hikvision to a point. Observium does scan poll add the camera. If needing to be remote monitored from an external network over WAN there are many different ways of doing it. One way could be to use an ipsec vpn tunnel with gre then use a routing protocol like ospf . Then you could use acls as to what gets to the monitoring system etc... Down Ports - Device Reboots

When I first discovered and polled these particular switches (cisco and edgeswitch) the Ports that were down were not showing up on the device_status_boxes. Which is what I expected. But today the equipment at that site was power cycled when we switched over to generator backup while the electricians hooked up the new auto switch over equipment for the new permanent backup generator. Since then device_status_boxes shows all the down ports and that the devices rebooted. So they will not go away. Other software I used in the past had a mechanism to acknowledge them and they would go away. My question is we would like to setup an Alert for all Error and Critical level events, but seems you can only do regex expressions on the syslog text message. Hello, I recently ran into a kind of inconvenient behaviour with Observium alerting devices as offline when SNMP on Proxmox nodes gets unresponsive. I already created an alert checker including the condition ‘device_status_type match ping’ which is way more reliable for me in such case. Is there a possibility to disable devices shown as offline in ‘Status Warning and Notifications’ on the frontpage when device_status is offline due to SNMP not responding? Kind Regards, N.

As a (very) keen user of HAProxy, is it on the roadmap to be an application Observium can monitor? The stats are quite easily gained through something like HAProxyctl or socat interface. Location changes

Hello all, I'm currently testing the PRO version before deploying it in production in our environment. I will have arround 1500 devices, on which i only have SNMP access. This mean i can't set the location correctly on the SNMP agent BUT, thanks the this great tool, i can set it manually in order to group my devices by locations (arround 250). I'm going to integrate all the devices via a script, but i need to adjust the location for each of them. Is there is a difference by changing the location via the web gui VS changing it on the field 'location' on the 'devices_locations' mysql table ? Thanks in advance for your help. Rds, Tarik.

By using the payload you sent to runscope we developed ObserviumV2. You can inform your clients that they can reach from "https://app.opsgenie.com/integration#/add/ObserviumV2 <https://app.opsgenie.com/integration#/add/ObserviumV2>" address. The integration is live now. You should fix the endpoint that you send the payload as https://api.opsgenie.com/v1/json/observiumv2 <https://api.opsgenie.com/v1/json/observiumv2>. Graphs not showing most recent data when refreshing

Hi, I have set Refresh pages to 1 minute and web pages are visibly refreshing, however, they do not show the latest data. The refresh just displays the same data between the "Data presets" value. It doesn't make sense to me: having a refresh but only showing the same data. The same problem is occuring for the Event Log display. I have checked around to see if I should be using a different value for Data Presets but they are all just for a particular time period. There is nothing for "Latest 6 hours" or some such this. In an older version of Observium it worked fine. Graphs always refresh to show the latest data. It is only now that I have installed a new version (a fresh install not an upgrade) that this problem has appeared. Many thanks for your help in advance. Version information is below. Unifi showing 2 physical memorys?

Hi All Im just wondering if anybody else has noticed that UniFi APs have suddenly started to show 2 Physical Memorys? Im not sure if its a new firmware issue on the UAPs or something changed in the SNMP on observium? Both values seem to be different and I’m guessing its ment to be Physical Memory and Swap Memory But its showing in the panel as Physical Memory and Physical Memory? empty disk io graphs for Solaris

Hi, The bytes/s disk io graphs for Solaris 10 machines are all blank. The iops graphs work. All graphs work for Linux (Debian) machines. Configuring email alerts not to send if top level device is down.

Is there a way to configure email alerts to only send out emails about a device being down if the top level device is still up. For example we have multiple remote locations across the state, and if the router at the site goes down we don't need the other 50 emails alerts about all devices behind the router. We need some way to introduce a hierarchy to the alerting. Hope this makes sense.. Awesome product by the way. I really like it! Thanks. Distributed Observium

Hi all, just joined the ml, read latest posts but no answer found. It seems that Observium doesn't support a distributed monitoring architecture, e.g. mapping remote proxies to access entire remote networks remotely, from a central management (e.g. like Zabbix, NetXMS, OMD etc.). We work with lots of remote customers, so it would be really useful to have a complete overview of their networks. Cheers Luca

Class Map Names disappearing

Hi, I have configured class-maps on a cisco router. They are working fine ( policy and server maps also configured and work ). In the CBQoS display for the interface it shows traffic divided up into each class very nicely. To begin with it entitled each set of graphs with the class map's name. Now that has gone. Is there a fix for this? Another a related question, if I update the class maps the results are not shown in the CBQoS display. Do I need to do a rediscover or some such thing? I have been deleting and adding the device back in but that causes all the historical data to be lost. Help very much appreciated. alerting XMPP chat room support

Hello, I’ve setup alerting via XMPP, which works just fine for any chatuser-recipient, but it seems like sending notifications into a chat-room (e.g. room(a)conference.example.net <mailto:room@conference.example.net>) is not supported.
