NetFlow Recommendation

Afternoon All, We recently purchased Observium after a recommendation from our Network Engineer, what Netflow software would you recommend to use alongside Observium? If you know any Open Source ones, that'd be awesome. I came across Nfsen but it's a tad too old. Also I have Observium talking to 6 out of 8 of my routers and SNMP is turned on on all of them. If you require any info please let me know. There are 7 Cisco x 1 Juniper routers and the affected routers are Cisco. Multi year history

Hi everyone! I was wondering about whether there is a recommended/approved/tested/tolerated way or plan of creating multi-year history (RRD data)? To reformulate it, changing the day/week/month/year history into something like day/week/month/year/10years... It's not a show-stopper, but sometimes there is demand to show or analyze historical data for more than 1 year in the past. Regards, Tylla

[QUESTION] Alerting Different Group and Devices

Hi, i have a problem with the Alerts, in the first case i dont recieve the emails alerts, after the update my alerts never send to my email. But before the update the emails alerting work fine... But my principal problem is the alerting notifications via email or slack or sms to differents groups and devices... Ex: I have 3 clients this clients have 50 devices each one... I need send only the alerts related for each clients devices not for all devices. This is possible? Thx. BR Santiago

UNIX Agent graph history

Hi everyone! We are using the CE version (17.9.0) so ignore my e-mail if this is already solved in the Pro edition. We started to configure the UNIX agent on a few of our machines and we saw that all the pop-up graphs in the Apps overviews are only showing the last 24 hours. Is this on purpose? Isn't there some possibility to make these graphs show the usual way (day, week, month, year)? Regards, Tylla

We noticed in the changelog that Netonix MIB was added. We have a Netonix switch but it was discovered as a generic device. We looked at the MIB list but we do not see the Netonix MIB in the list. Problem with special characters on device descriptions / snmp location etc...

Hello We are using Observium CE as part of our monitoring systems at IslaLink / OranLink. A few weeks ago, we updated to the last CE version (17.9.0). Since then, we are experiencing problems with the interface descriptions that may contain some especial characters like “áóéñ…”. It also happens with the SNMP location string. Seems that this was an old bug that was already solved: Observium OBS-1396 UTF-8/ISO characters fail in SNMP location This is causing some events flood, and incorrect display. How do I correct this time discrepancy?

How do I fix the time discrepancy between my Observium server and the Observium UI? Please see the attached screenshot. The time on my server is correct but the time displayed on the UI is off by an hour. Also, the "Uptime" shown on the attached screenshot shows "Down 8h 4m 59s." Stacked and combined line graphs breaks after upgrading to 8889 stable

Hello, I've created the Alert Checker with "sensor_class equals power" But i don't see any info about Nexus devices transceiver information. But for example - IOS XR devices shows transceiver information. Is it a problem wih NX-OS snmp stack ? Thanks.

Aggregate vs individual port graph maximum value & 95th % on bits graph

I have two graph questions that I haven't been able to get an answer on via IRC, so I thought this might be easier since I can include more information up front: 1st Question: A 2-port aggregate graph (agg_bits.png) shows a maximum value based on :AVERAGE while individual port graphs (port1_bits.png, port2_bits.png) for the ports that make up the aggregate show a maximum value based on :MAX. Is this intentional? If not, would it be possible to remove or toggle graphing average vs. maximum data on individual port graphs? I think both data points are useful, but in general when providing graphs the 5-minute average the only data we'd want to show them. More data below. 2nd Question: The "bits_old" graph includes 95th % both graphed and in the legend. Would it be possible to get the same for the other bits graphs, or at minimum, just bits? I did some digging and didn't find a means to use options via graphs.php to generate it myself. Ciena SAOS thresholds using incorrect OIDs

We recently added some Ciena 3942s and 3904s to our monitoring, and found that Observium (CE 17.9.8859) is picking up the wrong OID for some sensors. It seems that the same OID was reused for a couple of checks where they should have been the next in sequence, causing optics Tx power and voltage to not be properly checked. Alerts for an APC UPS

Grouping both ends of Core P2P links into single Graph

Hi, We are evaluating Observium at the moment, and we have many point-to-point links in our WAN as everyone should ;) Each end of the same p2p link is labeled to be identical; interface Te1/1/1 description CORE:DeviceA=DeviceB This results in two graphs in Observium. One for DeviceA (labelled "CORE:DeviceA=DeviceB") and one for DeviceB (labelled "CORE:DeviceA=DeviceB"). However as they are connected back-to-back to each other they show the exact same information (just "in" and "out" reversed obviously). Is it possible to merge these two ports/graphs into a single logical Core link? This would significantly save on screen real estate (halving the Core page at the least) and make tracing paths through the network much more logical. Similar to how the Customer graphs aggregate multiple ports with the same description together. But I guess throwing away one side of the link maybe? Details for each end could still be seen on the specific device's page to view locally significant things like port errors etc Thanks, Andy.

Hi all - I've noticed that some of my devices display an option to connect directly via SSH etc. as per attached screenshot but unfortunately not all devices provide this option. I presume this is device dependent since it appears that my Cisco & Mikrotik devices display this option but not Huawei or my Brocade switches Is this an Observium config or device based? Hi all - I've recently migrated a number of services to new Huawei kit and successfully discovered the device and all sub-interfaces etc. My problem is that Observium is not showing any traffic against any of the sub-interfaces. I can see the aggregated traffic fine but not at the sub interface level. I don't have the same problem on my older Cisco h/w Would appreciate any feedback on how to troubleshoot. Mal

Hi, I have a one question regarding migration devices in Observium from SNMPv2 to SNMPv3. I have in the Observium in this moment around 300 devices and want to use SNMPv3 instead of current SNMPv2c. How to trigger of checkpoint FW state in observium?

We're running observium pro stable release 17.10.8930 and are monitoring several checkpoint firewalls with it. I'm trying to figure out how to generate an alert when the firewalls fail over or when a state change occurs. I see that it's being polled as it's displayed for the device header. as you can see attached. This comes from checkpoint from the 1.3.6.1.4.1.2620.1.5.6.0 OID: SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.2620.1.5.6.0 = STRING: "active" But I don't see any method to select that as an entity type? Anyone have any pointers?

unable to display openvpn graphs

Hi all i have recently added my openvpn server to observium server for openvpn application monitoring. i have installed {{ xinetd and copied the openvpn script to }}/usr/lib/observium_agent/local/openvpn path. I have opened the openvpn server management port by adding 1st line as "management 10.100.115.220 49000 /etc/openvpn/pass.txt and then restarted openvpn and xinetd. When i checked using netstat on openvpn server the server is listening on tcp port 49000.{{}} i can access the management console of openvpn when i run the following command from my observium server "telnet 10.100.115.220 49000" followed by a password. But i cannot see the graphs of load and users connected in the Web GUI. I have checked RRD folder also of the device there is no rrd file named openvpn.rrd or so. The unix agent is already added to observium server and when i do "telnet 10.100.115.220 36602 | grep openvpn" then i get the following output : (nobody,223056,32312,0.2) /usr/sbin/openvpn --config vpn-routing.conf --daemon vpn-routing (nobody,195680,15056,2.3) /usr/sbin/openvpn --daemon --writepid /var/run/openvpn/vpn-bridge.pid --cd /etc/openvpn/ --config vpn-bridge.conf But i cannot see the graphs in web gui someone please help. Hi all, Just noticed a strange problem with reporting alarms on the ASR9001 (XR5.3.4). A lab router was reloaded and when it came back up there is a "Major" chassis alarm as one of the two PSUs has failed. However, neither the PSU failure nor the 'MAJ' alarm status are detected by Observium. Even after a full discovery and polling, it is all green and happy on Observium it seems. Howdy Adam, et al., So I just noticed that my Cat6509 and Cat7609 aren't showing per-module CPU and memory statistics any more. I now have a single "Processor" entry/graph for the entire chassis. Image being worth 1000 words, one is attached. This specific chassis is full of linecards with DFC modules, and those were being graphed previously. I verified this is across the board on several different devices, not just one. observations on link flapping

Hello, Observium did a very good job providing such a good application for monitoring network state. I'm very thankful for that. But ofcourse some pieces are missing. For example monitoring of interfaces flap. I wanted to ask - what is you solution to monitor a link flaps ? Do you do SYSLOG monitoring for that ? Or some kind of separate SNMP-TRAP software ? can you give any recommendation ? Thanks

Syslog alerting

We made syslog integration with syslog-ng and tried to do syslog alerting but we can't get it to work, for some reason it says "No logging alert entries found!". Problem with PoE status indicator on a HPE 5130 switch

Hi I am having a problem with a PoE status indicator on a switch which is used in our datacenter: Observium: Observium Professional 8930 (stable) Switch: HPE 5130 48G PoE+ 4SFP+ 1-slot HI Switch JH326A This is a switch cluster containing 2 switches via IRF. Initially, PoE was only enabled on the first one but approx. 1 month ago it was enables on the second switch as well. However, the sensor "PoE group 7" (which is used for the second cluster member) shows the status as "off" with a value of 2 (whereas "PoE group 4 " is showing "on" with a value of 1 as it should be). Is this an error maybe and how can i fix this false-positive? Thanks in advance! 1000 nodes monitoring using snmp

We have currently 100 network gear we are monitoring but now we have 1000 HP servers and i want to monitor its health using HP ILO snmp poll. I want i get alerted when system hardware failed or FAN or powersupply whatever. so i have two option: 1. snmp polling - method 2. snmp trap - method How big machine i need to poll data from 1000 HP ILO snmp data? looking for good advice here.

Multi-Site

Has anyone looked at setting up a multi-site with Observium or do you just setup at different locations? We have about 40 locations many are not connected via VPN because of business need. We were looking at Zenoss because it has a master/slave but really prefer observium setup and simplicity.

resetting sensors doesn't work (Observium 17.5.8580)

Hi I just noticed that one of our switches produces false positive errors because of incorrectly (auto) set thresholds for its sensors. I then activated "reset sensors" on the sensors page of the device (there were no values for "min" and "max" set, the current temperature of the sensor is 44 degrees). custom oid doesn't work after update

Hi I updated from an older Observium (85xx) to the latest 8943. I used two devices with 2-2 custom oids. After the upgrade the custom oids not associated to the devices. I tried to re-add it, but when i select the devices in the custom oid setup i got a red message: "ERROR: Unable to add OID association" I found a similar bug that is closed already: http://jira.observium.org/browse/OBS-2445 but looks like it is closed. hello, We're using Observium subscriber edition. I have some devices on which the alerts should be enabled, and on some others don't. Im thinking of creating groups - So for example, is it possible to enable alerts only on selected group ? But no all devices, thanks.

Juniper port polling problems

Hi, I have observium 0.16.1.7533. It has problems with two machines: Juniper mx240 with JunOS 15.1R2 and Juniper EX4550-32F with JunOS 12.3R12.4. This devices very slow polling ports information. Here I found the same problem: http://jira.observium.org/browse/OBSERVIUM-1695 <http://jira.observium.org/browse/OBSERVIUM-1695> But there it is written that "junipers have functionally broken SNMP stacks". Is there any solution to this issue? Are there any special settings or modules for JunOS ? Thanks.

Optic dbm alert checker and interface status

Hi, Is there a way to only trigger the dbm sensor alert if the corresponding interface is up? I thought I could get away with just testing if the sensor values fall outside the sensor limits. But when ports are down (even when unplugged) I get spiky readings which will trigger the alert. So it would be nice to check if the interface is up as part of the alert check. I suspect this isn't possible as things are right now. It seems sensors have no relationship to another entity (e.g a port on a router). Ideally, I would like to say something like this: Port Checker Condition ifOperStatus eq up sensors.dbm.juniper-dom-rx.sensor_value < @sensors.dbm.juniper-dom-rx.sensor_limit_low Port Checker Entity Match ifAdminStatus eq up dbm in sensor_classes juniper-dom-rx in sensor_types So only ports that are admin up and have an associated sensor type of the appropriate type would get added to the checker. This will ensure the condition will be able to refer to the appropriate sensor. This would imply there is some mapping/relationship between sensors and other entities. This is probably very MIB specific and very platform specific. But it would make for a very useful checker.

Juniper SRX1500 firewall questionable CPU OIDs used

Hello, I have Juniper SRX1500 firewalls for which Observium is sending false positive CPU alerts (example included below) based on feedback from Juniper. More specifically, I was told that the OIDs used by Observium to collect CPU information are not the correct ones for this devices in particular. Here are the OIDs that I was told should be used to monitor the data plane CPU usage (instead of the standard OIDs that poll the kernel):.1.3.6.1.4.1.2636.3.39.1.12.1.1.1 Or more specifically for forwarding plane flow (SPU) only: .1.3.6.1.4.1.2636.3.39.1.12.1.1.1.3" Here is an Observium alert example: Alert Juniper Firewall CPU Usage is over 40%! Entity FPC: FEB @0/*/* Conditions processor_usage gt 40 (49) Metrics processor_usage = 49 Duration 4m 19s (2017-10-22 17:22:53) Device Device host.mine Hardware SRX1500 Operating System Juniper JunOS 15.1X49-D50.3 Internet Router Location lab Uptime 27 days, 12h 3m 4s The above alert is seen several times a day per device. I'm currently running version 17.10.8921 (Linux 2.6.32-642.13.1.el6.x86_64 [amd64]) but have seen this with different frequencies on all other versions I had. VM or Iron

Hi Everyone, We have been running a VM on Iron box for a few years and now have been noticing slowdowns in performance ( longer poll times, choppy graphs ). We are thinking of moving observium to VM. In your experience, what do you think is better way to run observium on a VM or Iron ? What are the pros and cons ? Thank you for your responses.

Hi all, just curious do I need the pro version in order to see vms on esx servers? I see in the log for the esx host its collecting vm-agent data or at least showing it, but there is nowhere I can 'see' the vms that I can find. Im wondering if its just a matter of upgrading to the pro ... Thanks

SNMP not working in fedora 22

IPsec tunnel monitor question

we have multiple tunnel on ASA which we are monitoring using observium but in graph its just showing number of Active tunnel is there anyway we can have number of tunnel by IP or peer name so we configure alert if any one of tunnel down and take some action

APC Environmental Bars no longer displaying Health Graphs

Hi all, We have 2 APC environmental management agents which we've been using to monitoring temperature and humidity. We've upgraded to 17.9.8829 (stable) this morning, however the logo for each of these devices has changed to NetBotz, instead of the normal APC one. We've lost all health related graphs, temperature/humidity probes, and all related historic data. The event log lists each of the sensor probes being deleted from the system about 7 hours after the upgrade. Other than the upgrade we've made no changes to the system. We've since rebooted each device, and even deleted and re-added one to see if the ports will get re-polled, but no luck. Anyone else experiencing anything similar? Copy module properties between devices

Hey there, Is there perhaps a knob that can be used to copy device properties from Device > Properties > Modules from one device to another, or better yet, if I create a group of devices, can I have all members of the group inherit the same properties? I’ve looked through the GUI and also through the available CLI scripts looking for some clues, but haven’t found anything, so perhaps there’s no such ability? Thanks!

Cisco ASA 9.4(3)6 Remote Access Sessions

I am currently using the latest community edition and looking to go to the professional subscription. With a Cisco ASA 9.4(3)6 and graphing the Remote Access Sessions, I am seeing odd data and it looks like others have had the same issue for a couple years now. Device taking > 5 minutes to poll

Hey all, I’ve got a device (Zhone MXK-F) with over 10,000 ports on it, and Observium is taking well over 5 minutes to poll it (upwards of 15 minutes, actually). While there isn’t a definition specifically for MXK-F, it’s getting detected as MXK. os.inc.php is setting max-rep 50, so it’s at least trying to bulk walk, but I don’t know if it’s actually working. Overriding to max-rep 100 doesn’t have an affect on the polling time. So, I guess my question is whether or not I’m on the right track in assuming that this issue is likely that of bulk walk on this device, or possibly some other issue, and how would I determine one way or the other? If it’s something that I can pinpoint, I can throw it back to the vendor to fix. From the digging I’ve done so far, all other poller processes called from poller-wrapper complete in under 5 minutes, so I’m fairly certain that this issue is one of the device, not Observium.
